For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Hello new thread.

So far have eaten museli with raisins in. But it is only 8:40 so anything is possible .

Am moving offices and have got into London too early so am in Kings Cross station taking advantage of wireless internet access.

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 08:48

I have had pineapple (2 portions), pear, raisins

woowoo at wireless in Kings Cross
good name for a film?

didindan · 17/03/2008 08:50

Can I join in.
Have been lurking for a while and have decided to give it a go, I love fruit and veg so I'm sure it is just about thinking a bit more about what I eat
So far today - raisens in museli with a handful of strawberries and banana chopped in and glass of fresh squeezed OJ.
Planning veg soup for lunch
Then ? salad and chicken for dinner.

Quick questions, does this hurt your purse at all ?- on strict budget at the moment
Have many of you incidentally lost wieght through healthier lifestyle?

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 09:15

hello didindan
sounds like you will get your 10 today fairly easily
I think it can be more pricey yes, esp if you buy ready made salads and pricey imported fruit, but if you buy f+v in season from the greengrocers and use lentils, beans and wholegrains to fill out the meal then it can be much cheaper

bulk cooking and bulk buying helps me keep the cost down

I lost weight when I first started eating this way and exercising

TooTicky · 17/03/2008 09:34

Apple and raisins.

Hello and welcome Didindan

There is sunshine

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 09:35

there isn't here

OP posts:
lullabyloo · 17/03/2008 10:10

raspberries
blackberries
blueberries
mango

TigerFeet · 17/03/2008 10:14

banana
apple
porridge with raisins

fruit salad for later

something with salad for tea

I am doing this on a sort of budget - I buy whatever's cheap and get creative and also our local market is fab for cheap f&v. I got two mangoes for a quid and two punnets of raspberries for £2 last week, yum

It's freezing here and apparently snow has been forcast for next weekend

Overrun · 17/03/2008 10:17

So far orange juice, museli and a whole mango (very tasty it was too).
I do find that eating such vast quantities of fruit and veg does get costly.
The more you eat the more variety you want, and the more you shop, the more other stuff you can be tempted to get.
It is worth it though

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 10:31

Overrun! hello! how are you?

OP posts:
S1ur · 17/03/2008 10:34

Apple, strawberries, blueberries.

going for salad for lunch that should be a couple then erm..

Overrun · 17/03/2008 10:40

I'm good thanks, lol at your boys name thread being so popular Hope you have got some good ideas though.

my boys have all had this awful stomach virus for the last week and a half. So I have ended up not eating properly either. So I am determined to get back into some good habbits

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 10:46

oh GOOD I hope you stick around Overrun and that everyone recovers

Slur Tiger and Lully looking forward to hearing the rest of your 10 later [best attempt at being stern]

I may have to go shopping actually, we have not got much good veg in
and while we are out we might as well have lunch out

OP posts:
lullabyloo · 17/03/2008 10:54

errrrm

Brown rice sushi with avocado, spring onion, cucumber, carrot, sesame seeds.
& large beetroot, tomato, peanut shoot, watercress, cucumber, red pepper salad ...for lunch

havn't thought about supper yet

Boco · 17/03/2008 10:57

I definitely need a kick, not doing well with good food. Have had toast and coffee and just don't fancy a wrinkly apple or tiny hard orange or rock hard crunchy pear or rather black banana. Shoddy fruit issues.

I'm going to watch your film Franny, and do some work.

Boco · 17/03/2008 10:58

Lully! That was an early and magnificent lunch - did you construct sushi yourself? How did you do that?

MrsCarrot · 17/03/2008 11:20

Hi there

Have had a hard few days, thought about starting a thread for advice but feel more like sitting here with friends for a bit.

Basicly my biopsy results are back and it's not good news. I do have cervical cancer. It's very early, a stage 1A1 Adenocarcinoma, but it's a rarer more aggresive kind, about 80 or 90% of them are squamous which are the cells on the outside of the cervix. This is a cancer of the glands in the cervical canal, this is what the doctor meant by the smear abnormality being glandular. It's not always picked up by the smear test.

They thinkit's too close to the margins for cone biopsy so if I think I have completed my family they will probably recommend histerectomy, otherwise there is radiotherapy.

This is all from my GP, the letter I got last week simply said to come and discuss the results on the 7th April, nearly a month away. I went straight to the GP and they accessed the histology. Can't believe they leave you that long wondering. It's only a Monday clinic apparently. My gp is going to see if I can be seen sooner.

Sorry to add depressing note to a Monday morning. It is good that it's been found so early.

TigerFeet · 17/03/2008 11:25

Oh (((MrsC))) I'm so sorry

Son't know what to say really. I have no experience of this sort of thing.

You don't have to be brave for us you know xx

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2008 11:31

shit MrsC
shitetty shit

I am very glad they have found it so early and that you were conscientious about having your smears done
shit I am extremely sorry to hear this
what would you like anyone to do?

OP posts:
Boco · 17/03/2008 11:37

Oh MrsC

What horrible news, I'm so sorry - you don't need to be brave yet, plenty of time for bravery. We've been wondering where you were.

It is good that they've caught it so soon though isn't it, and it'll be treated and you'll be ok. And in the meantime when you're not feeling ok you have to let us know what you need - I want to do something or say something helpful but I just don't know what.

Poor you (((())))) < don't think i've ever typed those before.

xxxxx lots of love

IdrisTheDragon · 17/03/2008 11:39

Mrs C - that is horrible news for you .

I too don't know what to say but wanted you to know I am thinking of you.

lullabyloo · 17/03/2008 11:45

Oh lovely one
I dont know what to say..except
We are here,we are all here
whenever & whatever
(((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))

MrsCarrot · 17/03/2008 11:55

Thanks everyone

I don't want anyone to do anything, Franny, really I don't, it's just nice to be able to talk about it. I think I might feel worse if I started to get cards and stuff. Does that sound ungrateful? Sorry if it does. Still feels very unreal. I haven't slept very well obviously.

Feel a bit better after seeing my GP this morning and she said it was so early that they had a meeting between specialists to decide if it was 'in situ' or invasive. They have decided on invasive but it's about as early as it can be so should be easier to treat. She agrees it's a horrible wait and is doing what she can to bring it forward.

Boco · 17/03/2008 11:58

No, I know what you mean about cards, it's not ungrateful at all, it's how you feel and you should tell us so we don't get it wrong and accidentally make you feel worse.

Good what the GP said, sounds like they're taking every precaution. The wait is horrid, hope she can get it moved forward for you.
