oh look at you all doing so well!

now hopefully I'll be able to rejoin in a couple of days. I haven't been able to go for WEEKS as I was away, then had the flu, and now have been out working nearly every night over the last 3 weeks (and all that overlapped with extended throaty/coldy stuff). That's all over now though, but have to go and join the gym to run as it's now too dark here to go after the children have gone to bed (too bloody cold as well).
I don't know what week to restart on to be honest, maybe week 3 or 4.

bramblebooks · 05/05/2008 12:54

(( mrs j ))) not getting too close - lurgy - hope you're well over it all now.

I've just done 9.5k. Partly by accident as I'd planned a 9k but when I mapped it afterwards found I'd gone further. If I'd realised I'd have done the extra 0.5k! Took DH and kids with me on their bikes, littlest on the tag-along. Very pleased.

Hope you're ok too, dita.

C'mon the girls!!!

bramblebooks · 05/05/2008 12:59

just seen dita's time - omg, fabbo!

furball, take care. big foamy bath will ease that chest. You'll get there mate.

MUN - happy shopping. The right mix of music certainly helps, although my air guitar to black eyed peas certainly draws some looks from the other canal users!

KathG · 05/05/2008 13:30

hi all have jsut got to the end of week 4, and wanted advice, whether I should do it again or move to week 5, as still found it hard (but ran all the bits I was supposed to). I'm surprised I haven't given up yet!

ditavonteesed · 05/05/2008 16:27

at 9.5k bramble wow, kath keep going you are over the worst.
I think I could probably get my distance up this wekk as I definatly need some head space to sort all this stuff out so I don't end up exploding.

bramblebooks · 05/05/2008 20:58

deciding not to run next to dita without covering self in cling film or taking baby wipes!! I find once I'm over a couple of k I can go on to 5. Now I've done 5 a few weeks on the trot (!) I found it easier just to keep going.

Kath, I re ran some of the weeks a few times, you must be your own judge on that, sometimes I needed to push myself a bit harder, oftentimes I had to be kinder to myself and repeat the week (a few times sometimes!!).

tyaca · 05/05/2008 23:11

can i join in? i am trying to lose two stone of baby weight. joined a gym three weeks ago and only the running machine is keeping me motivated.

never run outside - (terrified) - but can only afford gym for three months. after that i will have to hit the parks. there is a 10k i want to do in late september.

are you all specifically following that podcast plan?? i think i'd be too slapdash to stick to it ... BUT would love to join in nonetheless. is that allowed?

at the moment the most i have run is 4k. nearly died. dh (who runs a lot) reckons that by september i should be able to do 10k in an hour crazy crazy talk.

Wheelybug · 06/05/2008 08:52

Welcome Tyaca ! I reckon you could do 10K by September if you're already doing 4K. I found once I'd mastered 5K then it wasn't long before I could do 7K and that was only a couple of weeks ago and on saturday I managed 8.5K and could have done a little more (if someone was running behind me with a shotgun ).

As fro running outside - make sure you wear an MP3 then you can sort of pretend you're in your own little world and no one can see you. Works for me and it does get easier - when I started I chose routes where I wouldn't meet anyone I knew. Now I run on main roads and round the areas where a lot of my friends live - once I was running and kept bumping into one of my friends who was giving a driving lesson... v. embarrassing.

Kath - If you feel you want/need to repeat a week I dont' think that matters - but, if you've managed the week then I think you could go up too. Do what you feel most comfortable with.

I went out for 5K last night and tried to push the speed but still did 28 mins. I was feeling pretty sick half way round so reckon maybe I shouldn't try faster !!

Furball · 06/05/2008 09:01

Hooray - I'm back! just done a 4k to ease myself in with, gosh it's been weeks. I tested myself yesterday and gave ds a race round the football pitch, to see how my chest would be and it was fine, so thought right matey tomorrow you're back to it. it's bloody hot out there though even at this time.

EffiePerine · 06/05/2008 09:07

Mus get back to it meself: have had horrible cold and been busy, so it's been a week since my last run. Def tomorrow...

Theresa · 06/05/2008 17:38

Hello tyaca, come on in! I've never used the podcast, I'd already started running at beginning of January for first time ever (I'm 44) when I saw this site. I've always just done my own thing, initial outing was 20 mins and I ran for a bit and walked for a bit and built it up from there. I did a 10K on Easter Sunday in awful weather and it took me 1hr 10 mins ish, about 1400 people in front of me and 100 behind am aiming for great north run in october but i'm still pretty slow, averaging 11 - 11 1/2 min miles but can do 10 1/2 min miles on a 3 mile run. Use the mp3 player but as i'm not hugely into music i found my mind wandering so i download podcasts from bbc radio, phone ins, J Ross etc which keep my mind occupied. I really dont mind people seeing me, I ususally get very positive comments so dont worry about it!

Theresa · 06/05/2008 17:39

ps tyaca, go to a site like thegoodrunguide (there are others whihc you;ll find recommended on this thread) and you can map out your runs to see how far you;re going. When I started I was using a step counter that also did km from '£1' shop and when someone on here suggested goodrunguide I could have kissed her as I was running further than my step counter was measuring!

bramblebooks · 06/05/2008 18:47

Hi tyaca, more the merrier!

Wow guys, I feel like I need a zimmer today. 8k didn't do whatever 9.5k has done to my joints!

LadyJogsAlot · 06/05/2008 21:01

hi everyone (welcome newbies!),

i did my 25 mins today. i ran 3.75k in that time.

feel good

Furball · 07/05/2008 09:08

just got back from another 4km - I know you shouldn't got every day but I just need to go again tomorrow so that my slimming world weigh in isn't marred by me sitting on me jacksey as i only lost 1/2 lb last week from me cough.

Wooluffy - hows the cold?

OP posts:
Furball · 07/05/2008 09:10

Minum · 07/05/2008 09:34

Wow, everyone is doing amazing things

I'm Just got back from my 28 minuter, and I made it to the lamp post today, never got past the letter box before , so on the way to doing 5km in 30 mins

Not sure about the running in the sunshine though, it was beautiful, but I was seriously sweating. I've moved to shorts, but they were driving me mad by riding up all the time, so will look for something else. Are those lycra ones sweaty or comfy ?

Minum · 07/05/2008 09:42

Have just seen face in mirror its redder than the pillar box red top I'm wearing - I'm really as I stopped to speak to a couple of people on the way back - no wonder they were congratualating me, I look like I've run a marathon !

Furball · 07/05/2008 09:54

I suffer with a bright red face as well minum

KathG · 07/05/2008 10:22

well did first run of week 5 yestday, and can still walk today.. just don't know when I can do the others this week, the podcast is definitely working better than my previous attempts... think it stops me trying to do it too fast. All of you seem so far ahead though!

LadyJogsAlot · 07/05/2008 10:37

i go really red too!
it's quite embarrassing!

i think i'll have to go out tonight as well as we're going to see derren brown thursday night. i can't wait

KathG, don't worry you'll soon be running further. week 6 has got a 25 min run which is next week for you!

Wheelybug · 07/05/2008 11:15

yeh ! Well done everyone for getting out in this weather.... do you remember last week we struggled beacause of the rain !! Have just done just over 5K (because I had to detour to post a card at the start !). Played hunt the shade but was hard. Am red and dripping .

Just so hoping RFL isn't this hot ! Am struggling too with what to wear. I wear 3/4 length running trousers (baggy ones) but they're thick lined so boiling but I don't think the world is ready for my thighs in shorts yet....

Just about to sign up for this in September. Am doing Hampton Court so at least it should flat pretty.

debbiewebweb · 07/05/2008 12:24

Hello there everybody, tried a quick catch up with the thread and you all sound like your doing really well. Unfortunately life has got in the way of my running lately, so haven't progressed as I'd hoped but managed to run with a group a week or two ago and did my first ever 5k with them. Was well pleased with myself coz was pertrified about running with people who've done marathons etc, but they are friends, friends and they were great with me. loved it, but have only mnanaged 1 short run since

LadyJogsAlot · 07/05/2008 18:16

dww, that's fab!
don't be , at least you got out once!

debbiewebweb · 07/05/2008 19:16

Thanks jogsalot, was chuffed but am now getting a bit worried as its my RFL on SUNDAY - this SUNDAY and I thought I'd be so much more prepared, am wondering whether to go out for a short one this evening or go try and test myself to see how far I can go or just to pop to the gym? Don't know whats for the best am not feeling very motivated and I did suffer a few days after that 5k I did so don't want to risk anything for sunday.
