depends on your mins to a mile. When im on a treadmill i normally burn 100 cal, every 7.5 mins, and i run a 5k in about 29 mins, averages just over 9 mins miles...hope that helps and yes i want to get faster!

thanks kentgirl - I knew you can't tell me exactly but a rough ball park figure is interesting.

according to my training log on mapmyrun furball I burn 302 calories running 5K in about 28 mins (about 9 mins a mile) .

Nike + tells me 372cals for 5k, and given that my heart monitor measured 10k's cals as 785 that seems pretty accurate. They're both calibrated to my height, age and weight.

oooh let me share my gruesome running injury - You know I was winging telling you about my sore toe the other day. Well... I took off my purple nail varnish today and was having to scrub particularly hard at that toe... only to find out my toenail is black . So, having been running for 6 months to be slimmer for the summer hols I'm going to have a gammy toe. Am assuming I will lose the toe nail. Running's not all its cracked up to be is it ? .

Here's a question for you. How do you fit your running in when the kids are off school. I'm off but DH is still working. He has to leave for work at 6.45 so I'd have to be up at about 6 to get ready, out and back for him to leave. Also he doesn't come home till about 7pm and by then I feel quite sluggish after tea. Weekends aren't a problem as he's off. Any suggestions, greatly received.

I'm in a similar boat GRsym. - I at easter went only one evening a week and the other day I did a weekend morning run. The evening run is not that bad and you don't feel as pooped as you think you would and you also sleep well!

I don't know how this will work for me though for 6 weeks only going twice a week may have to up it to 3 but dh and i compete for evenings as he likes to go cycling most nights.

I'd use the system me and DH used to use when going diving. Who-ever gets out first wins!

G, I've registered! My next run is tomorrow night - village fun run!

Re running when the kids are home - if I don't get out in the evening I don't go until the weekend Playdates? ! I think it's just a case of bracing yourself no matter how knackered you feel as sometimes it can really perk you up - or if you're like me, make you feel properly tired!

I've had to book dd into playmornings at our leisure centre over the summer so I can run - the weeks we are here she is going 2 mornings so I can get in at least 3 runs (1 at weekend) but I have a 10K race in Sept so need to keep the momentum up. It costs a fortune though to do but as I don't pay gym fees I guess it all works out (and dd loves it).

A friend who has a dog (and her dds and my dd are v. close) has offered to take dd with her for walks whilst I go off and run too which is great and I'm also hoping to slot in a few playdates (note to self: must book some in for here so parents feel they have to reciprocate ).

However, we are off to France and SPain for 2 weeks in the middle so will probably veg and stuff my face for that period and have to start back on week 1 podcast on my return .

I work from home so can go out in my "lunch hour" and come back and shower. DH also works from home so the days I am not working, theoretically, I can go out for 30 mins and leave DD with him.

Given my situation, there is no excuse really, is there??

Wheelybug, just seen a post on another thread about you dropping 2 dress sizes in 6 months - is it the running do you think?

Brambles, I thought you had added all those extra Km's but it seems others have joined us. It's nearly halfway there already.

twofalls - I attribute it to the miracle of moving more and eating less (if only I'd known about this earlier )! Seriously though - principally the running. I have lost 18 lbs so far. The first half a stone was easyish once I started running, the next 5/6 lbs was hard and then the last half a stone was quite easy as it coincided stretching my distances to 10K. I have reached a bit of a stagnation though in the last couple of weeks so guess I am going to have to run more !! I have 3 lbs to go to what I thought my realistic target was but now am aiming for another 5 lbs less than that (as that would get my BMI into normal at 9 stone 2 lbs... Am a midget !). So.... about another half a stone to go (but haven't been under 10 stone for many years so am pretty pleased with where I am at the mo).

Gscrym/Brambles - I should be with you soon, birthday is in 2 weeks and am fairly sure the nike+ should be making an appearance (DH isn't v.subtle when he rings me from the Nike store in gatwick airport ).

GColdtimer · 02/07/2008 14:10

good for your wheelybug, that is really good going. I think the final half a stone if really tough but hopefully your training will get you there. I too am a midget (5ft) and I used to be 8 and a half stone before I had dd. I knew I had been putting a bit of weight on but was shocked when I got weighed at the doctors and was 9stone 8lbs. So I want to loose 8lbs at least but preferably a stone.

A question I have just done my run for today and found it quite easy - should I move on to week 4 next time, even though I have only done one session at week 3?

oooh, g, I wonder where they've come from - I was really impressed!!

SparklyPrincess · 02/07/2008 16:34

Twofalls, I would have a go at week 4 - if you really struggle you can always go back a little bit. It's been a while since I found it easy though!

I have a similar question, actually, aimed at those who've got to the end of the podcasts. I really struggle to run for more than about 15 mins. Have done a 20 mins, and 25 mins (was staggering at the end of that one!) but can't seem to do it again!

Did 3 x 12 mins the other night, covered over 3 miles. I've had this idea that doing this sort of session, perhaps going up to 3 x 15 mins will improve my stamina.

Getting to the point ...

Is it better for me to do 'interval' training (by which I mean run-walks) or should I just stop complaining and run solidly? Or do a mixture of both?

Report
GColdtimer · 02/07/2008 19:44

My friend got stuck at this stage and she gradually increased her running by a minute a time until she got 15. Then she did 2 x 20 minute runs decreasing the amount of walking between the runs and including 2 60 sec sprint runs to improve her fitness. She then gradually increased her minutes until she dropped the walking and was running for 30 mins. She then built up from here.

Does that make sense? I am certainly no expert though (and nor is she, she just tried it and it worked) so it would be interesting to see what others say.

Hi guys, I have been so lazy (well actually iI have had tonsilitus), haven't been out since I did the 8k. need to pull my soxcks up, I have also joined slimming world yesterday so should be a bit more motivated. I am now feeling quite confident that I can do the 10k and am also still off the fags.
Really is a year of all change isn't it.

leccy barbie, you GO girl!!

Just in from our fun run - about 4k in 22 mins omg! My mate from down the road was running just in front and as she beat me last year, I had a grudge to settle! When it came to the end, she flagged, so we egged each other on and came in together It was a bloody killer, because it was more of a race than a fun run, but it's my best time ever, so I figure I should do more of them to pick up a bit.

wheelybug · 04/07/2008 08:49

Wowee - well done Brambles, great time !!

EB - hope you're feeling better soon and get back out there !!

Sparkly - I think when I got to the end of the podcast, I changed to running distances rather than times. For me, thinking I had to run for x minutes made me less likely to do it as you're clock watching but I found that by setting myself a route/distance I would usually manage it (and often more).

Twofalls - Have you run again ? what did you decide ? If you haven't it might be worth trying week 4 and see how it goes.

I was so pleased with myself, I was out 5 days out of 7, managing to do week 3 (albeit slowly and quite out of puff) and now I've done something to my ankle.

I was away at the weekend. Got up on saturday morning, it was lovely outside (was in Berwick), so I decided that I'd go along the cliffs. I was finishing off the second of the 3 minute runs, very out of breath, and went onto the walk part. My ankle was really sore by the time I finished the cool down. I was limping all day saturday. It feels a bit better now. It's just one bit that's sore to touch. It doesn't look swollen and I'm able to walk on it now. It's just at the top of the sticky our bit. I'll try tomorrow morning and see if I can run on it. I hope so.

Anyone had any experience of this. I've heard of shin splints, but ankle splints?

Hi ladies. Please can I join? I posted on the first thread many months ago but never started the programme. I have had health issues which are now resolved (got rid of my angry gall bladder complete with many stones!), so I need to get fit! I was thinking of starting tomorrow morning, now or never!
