I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

widgypog · 03/03/2008 08:27

well done lady jogs..i am doing week 5 run 3 tues so just ahead of you will let you know how I go.

When listening to the podcast i cant help feeling the 20 mins seems like an eternity. basically it is running around my whole village!!!

still PMA I am sure if I put my mind to it i can do it.

i am off to join Rosemary Conley this morning and have pilates tonight so I had better lose some serious weight soon!!!!

Furball · 03/03/2008 09:07

woooohooo!!

LilRedWG · 03/03/2008 09:23

Well done Furball!

MrsJohnCusack · 03/03/2008 10:26

wow - VERY impressed furball

well I did week 3 run 3 tonight and actually didn't find it too hard. running round the park on the grass really helps I think. BUt maybe I'm actually getting a little bit fitter????!!! which would be v.exciting

I FEEL better but I have not lost a single pound

Minum · 03/03/2008 12:56

Well done all of you, fantastic progress

I'm finding it a bit hard at the moment, I can run my 22 minutes. but I have to push myself, and I'm having real aching legs when I run. I managed it this morning. but I was struggling. I'm going to put some new music on my MP3 player to inspire me.

Also a bit about initial weight loss having stopped. Give me a kick someone, and get me motivated again.

widgypog · 03/03/2008 17:01

virtual kick minum...

pinkspottywellies · 03/03/2008 18:34

bleurgh I've only been running about twice in the last fortnight and I have to go tonight. Urgh. And it's cold

Please can I leave it til tomorrow? Pleeeeaase. It's getting more difficult now it's just 25 boring minutes of pounding with no wlking to look forward to. I need motivation.

LadyJogsAlot · 03/03/2008 19:33

well done furball and wigypog!

psw and minum, you've come this far, don't give up now!

mrsJC, make sure you measure yourself, you may not be losing weight but you might have lost inches!

right, i'm off out to do my 8 mins...

Furball · 03/03/2008 20:25

how did you get on ladywhojogsalot?

pinkspottywellies · 03/03/2008 21:47

I did it!!!!! I ran/jogged for 30 mins (at least) I did 4.5k (2.8 miles) plus my 2 x 5mins warm up/cool down walk. My route is usually the 2.8 including the walks but I carried on so I ran a full 2 laps (the bit I've measured) then walked back for the 5 mins.

Sorry. Waffly. But very chuffed! I did it to my own music and it was fine. (Sorry Rawb )

tortoise · 03/03/2008 21:52

Going to try and start week 2(again)tomorrow.
Haven't managed to find time to fit jogging in with everything else!
Can't see any way of doing more than twice a week though.

pinkspottywellies · 03/03/2008 22:00

My mum's about to start Tortoise and she can only fit it in twice a week. I think it will be fine. If you do it 3 x a week you still have some longer breaks than every other day and when I have had a week off from being busy or ill I've still been able to carry on where I left off.

I would say aim for 2x a week and 3 is a bonus rather than aiming for 3 and being disappointed if you can't! Good luck and keep coming on here for motivation.

Like this:

GO Tortoise, GO Tortoise, GO!

tortoise · 03/03/2008 22:04

Lol thanks PSW.
Will aim for Tuesday and Thursday Mornings when DD2 is at pre-schol. It was working out fine at the start of this thread. just need to get back into it!

Furball · 04/03/2008 06:44

pinkspottywellies - FANTASTIC!

wheelybug · 04/03/2008 08:43

Wow ! Well done PSW - half an hour... wowee!!! Psychologically its definitely harder without the walking breaks but I think its better doing the longer ones with your own choice of music !!

Good luck Tortoise and everyone running today !

widgypog · 04/03/2008 09:40

boo hoo I didnt manaage the 20 minuter I got a really painful stitch half way through and had to stop at 12 mins.. oh well will try again on Friday..poo and piss!!!!!

wheelybug · 04/03/2008 10:52

Hey widgy - don't worry. Just think 12 minutes is still longer than any of the other runs to date. Well done.

On the stitch front - I went through a phase of getting them and this is what I found helped me:

  • not eating or drinking 2 hours before (was actually ok after 1.5 hours but 2 hours is recommended)
  • stamping on side of stitch as you run
  • breathing out hard and fully as you run
widgypog · 04/03/2008 11:49

THANKS WHEELY you are right but I did get frustratec with myself. will tryout those things

pinkspottywellies · 04/03/2008 16:33

Widgy in the immortal words of my school PE teacher Miss Bailey 'run through it girls'! If you can possibly manage it just keep running if you get a stitch and it will go. Hope the other tips help too.

My mum started training today!! She did it and was fine and I'm soooo proud of her!! We're doing the Race for Life with my sister too. Can't wait. Just need to get dsis's arse in gear! I'm sending her out tonight even if I have to drive the two hours to her house and go with her!!

LadyJogsAlot · 04/03/2008 17:06

wow psw!

furball, i did my 2 x 8 min jogs

next jog on sunday. can't believe i'm even going to attempt 20 mins.

widgypog, stay positive! you should be proud of yourself for getting to 12 mins.

supposed to go to aerobics tonight, am so tired though. really can't be arsed...

widgypog · 04/03/2008 19:14

thanks pinkspotty ..I got it at about 8 mins and kept going until 12 . It was really painful though and I couldnt get rid of it. I paused the ipod and walked for a bit but t wouldnt go. I actually walked home and still had it 20 mins later.

I just dont think I am capable of running 20 mins yet. Now on top of this my knees are hurting and my chiropractor says to rest them. poo and piss agin!!
well done everyone else

pinkspottywellies · 04/03/2008 19:29

Oh crikey Widgey - well done for keeping going for that long!

Has anyone noticed the post count at the top - we're going to need a new thread soon! Well done Misdee on starting such a great thread
