I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

oh and i am not eating any more. the running takes away my hunger if anything

maybe soon. have a feeling i'm hanging on to some weight through breastfeeding

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 16:30

ah! mrsjc, if you do not eat you body will hold on to fat because it thinks you are starving. esp if you are bfing! you must eat well.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/03/2008 16:36

oh I know
I do eat
Exactly the same as before

I have been up for over 3 hours now. DS FINALLY asleep in the pram. I have puffy eyes from crying. Wah

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 16:56

why you cry MrsJC?
is everything ok?

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 16:56

(apart from the obvious)

Itsthawooluff · 07/03/2008 13:06

Well done Furball - 20 mins merits major respect in my book.

Managed 2nd run of week three yesterday. In the gym again, because it seems to be much easier on the knees / hips / shins. Slightly phased by prospect of 5mins, but didn't think I would do 3 mins when a couple of weeks ago 90 seconds had me hooting for breath.

Looking forward to last of week 3 runs - and that is a phrase I can promise I never thought I would say

I want a T-shirt to wear while jogging (I don't think my speed merits the name of running) that says "Run, fat girl, run", or "It may be huge, but at least my a*se is in gear"

LadyJogsAlot · 07/03/2008 16:04

itsthawooluf, we should all have those tshirts printed as a sort of mn team kit!

Minum · 07/03/2008 16:30

Furball thats fab - well done

I had a good one this morning, increased length of run by 100 yards or so. I'm finding I get ridiculously hot and red faced. so I'm going to run in leggings instead of jogging bottoms I think.

And I found Sophie Ellis Bextor is suprisingly good to run to [smile}

pinkspottywellies · 08/03/2008 14:33

Urgh. Managed half an hour again this morning but it was the wordt run so far. I was running into a really stong wind with a bit of a cross wind nearly knocking me off my feet from time to time for the first 12 mins. It was horrible so I turned round to head back and it could have been a different day!! Wind behind me, so much easier on the way back and I carried on a bit further. It's the first time I've deviated from my normal route too.

Oh well I did it! Will measure the distance later. My mum has done her second session (yay!) and my sister still hasn't started! I've got £40 sponsorship for Race for Life so far!

pinkspottywellies · 09/03/2008 20:16

Hey! Where is everyone?! Is no-one running?

Minum · 09/03/2008 20:27

PSW - I'm here ! I know just what you mean about sticking to the same route, well done for doing 30 mins despite the winds.

I'm going to try running every day this week, as I'm getting desparate to lose a bit of weight, and want to find out if I can do a daily run, or if I really need a day of rest in between.

But a bit worried about the weather tomorrow

pinkspottywellies · 09/03/2008 20:36

They say your body needs the rest day in between to actually make the changes you want (don't quite know how it works but that's the basis of it!) I think you can do something else on the days in between like swimming or yoga - called cross-training. Are you dieting as well?

Don't know what the forecast is particularly for here. Wonder if we'll get any of it.

bramblebooks · 09/03/2008 20:58

Hey there everyone!

Took the whole family out today! I did my 25 mins and DH started week 5. Our boys went on their bikes! I imagine that next week I'll have to go to the gym and run on the treadmill or get blown into the canal!

pinkspottywellies · 09/03/2008 21:10

Well done Bramble! It's nice that you're all doing it together.

bramblebooks · 09/03/2008 22:29

Thanks! I'm graduating (again!) on Weds and working Tues/Thurs, so I'm trying to get my head around this week's training! Think I'll do a bit on the treadmill tomorrow, then I'll have to wait until Fri to train again, unless the weather's ok for me to get out after work on Thurs - it's getting addictive this!

Well done PSW! Do you use the gmaps pedometer to measure?

I now have my 10k race training chart up on the fridge to help me to stick to it!

MrsJohnCusack · 10/03/2008 08:07

now look
I need some advice
have just done week 4 run 3
first run, only did 2.5 mins of last run. decided to do this week twice as I though it was too much of a step up from week 3
second run - walked for about 2 mins of the second 3 min run
third run - walked for about 1.5 mins of the first 5 min run

but then - as with the second run - got into a real 'zone' during the second 5 min run so decided to keep going and make up the 1.5 mins - ended up running for an extra 4 mins - so I did a 9 minute run!!!!! v.pleased with myself

if you made it through that extremely dull explanation, do you think I should go on to week 5 or repeat week 4? I seem to hit my stride in the last 5 min run

I can't decide

MrsJohnCusack · 10/03/2008 08:08

actually don't bother reading that

I think I'll repeat it but continue to do a longer run at the end if I can, or something

muppetgirl · 10/03/2008 08:13
ivykaty44 · 10/03/2008 08:22

MrsJC - the program is a general guide, everyone is different so don't let the program hold you back if you feel you can do 10% more than the program.

Just don't go mad and you will be fine.

MrsJohnCusack · 10/03/2008 08:26

ooooh I shoudldn't think so!

ivykaty44 · 10/03/2008 08:39

muppetgirl grab your running shoes and out the door!

muppetgirl · 10/03/2008 08:43

I had ds 2 17 weeks ago and have lost the baby weight (3 stone in 6 weeks!) but still have the spare tyre tummy. I started playing tennis 4 weeks ago and now play 3-4 times a week. My general fitness is shocking and are having a personal training session on Friday to start running. Used to be very good but now not at all! I have to buy a pair of running shoes this week (tennis shoes just for indoors and I have a gym pair) can anyone recommend a good pair for a beginner?

LadyJogsAlot · 10/03/2008 09:29

ahh bum. i have a really sore throat and chesty cough.

g u t t e d.

was going to try a 20 min jog last night but obviously my body is trying to avoid that by making me ill!

am feeling depressed at the thought of not getting out there for a bit.

boo hoo.

ivykaty44 · 10/03/2008 10:05

Ok been sat in the corner of Waterstones for the last hour reading all about "begining to run" and found some interesting bobs and bits

Peanut bitter - eating peanutbutter and bagels two hours efore you run - whippy

Cottage cheese and blueberries, yes together for eating straight after running. The cottage cheese apparently gives your muscles protien they need for after running and calcium and the blueberrys , can't remember but were good aswell

I like all these foods (well bagels are ok but toast I am sure will substitute)

Also liked the bits about how running is so very good for a longer life less risk of heart attack, cholestral, diabetes, stroke etc - aren't we all good girls!

Also found this aswell - some tips for our safety and well being
