I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Give me a kick girls. Was soooo tired monday morning having had a bad night with ds2's diabetes that I didn't train. I need to go out and do 25 mins tomorrow ...

(have registered here )
but am not asking for sponsors until May or so - it just inspires me to train!

Good luck widgypog!

misdee · 04/03/2008 20:50

well i planned to run today, but woke this morning coughing like a sixty a day smoker and feeling like sh*te. seems i have picked up whatever has been annoying my girls for the last few weeks.

by the time i get over all these set backs i'm gonnna have to do week two again and then move back to week 3.

i have found other things easier to do though. cycling before, used to exhaust me. the other day i felt fine, even uphill.

just wish my weight would plummet down like some peoples weight does when they exercise.

bramblebooks - why don't you do the run the other way round so it's a 'slow downhill run'

LadyJogsAlot · 05/03/2008 09:24

misdee, it will come down. just keep on going.
i have only lost 7 pounds in 9 weeks of jogging. quite a slow weight loss. however, you are changing your lifestyle here, not just on a quick fix.

it will come off, keep going

Furball · 05/03/2008 11:59

I've not lost that much eiter misdee maybe 3 pounds? since I started in January, but at least we are doing something rather than being couch potatoes! Thats how I see it, I'm getting myself fitter and I feel better for it - how many people do you know in the real world that a) would go running and b) can run longer than 5 mins? not many is there? plus you are cycling, walking and other stuff which must be doing positive things for your body.

wheelybug · 05/03/2008 12:17

I haven't lost much either although have dropped about a dress size . I am blaming the £2.99 ikea scales I bought .

As the others have said, its a lifestyle change and you will be getting fitter and healthier and toning up.

Well done everyone on your runs. Bramblybooks - did you get out there and run ??? Come on... hup two three four....

wheelybug · 05/03/2008 12:17

Bramblebooks even - soz...

Furball · 05/03/2008 12:55

thats why I love this thread! thats why I love running cos to look at me I'm no athlete and nor are (by the sounds of it) a lot of girls here. I like the fact that it's not just stick thin people that run. I'm a size 16 and wobbly, yet, I can run and hopefully (fingers crossed) I will run for 20 mins tomorrow. (I had to wait in for a delivery today!!) I think us size 14+ ladies who the world would have us believe are couch potatoes aren't and sometimes the thin people maybe thin - but are they fit and healthy?

Minum · 05/03/2008 13:00

Agree Furball, I love being able to run even though I'm a 14/16, enjoy a drink etc etc.

I had a good one this morning, no longer timimg myself, but trying to increase the distance each time, working towards my reaching my target by Easter. The new music helped a bit, as did running to a specific place, rather than running for a fixed amount of time.

Good luck everyone, lets hope it warms up a bit soon, but lets enjoy this gorgeous sunshine

misdee · 05/03/2008 13:30

thanks.

i went to weigh in this morning and have lost 2.5lb this week, which means i have lost 9.5lb since starting in january. (i am doing slimming world as well), but went back to bed as still feeling really rough and tender in the chest. my throat is ripped raw as well.

am hoping to get back out there running next week if i am better.

LadyJogsAlot · 05/03/2008 16:56

9.5 pounds is a great steady weight loss and is what you should be aiming for.

i love the fact that i'm a size 16 and can run too

pinkspottywellies · 05/03/2008 19:53

Is anyone on here less than a size 14?! I'm a 14 (hopefully soon to be 12 with diet and exercise) but seems like most of us are certainly not thin!

misdee · 05/03/2008 20:08

i'm certainly not under a 14.

i'm a 20 still.

cant wait to get down to an 18.

pinkspottywellies · 05/03/2008 20:23

Well done on your slimming Misdee. You're doing really well. It's hard isn't it I find it ok in short bursts but it's the thought that you have to think about what you're eating all the time for like ever that gets me down!

wheelybug · 05/03/2008 20:57

Well done MIsdee on the weight loss - sounds good to me.

I am under a 14 but I'm also a midget. Am 5 ft on a good day - so I need to be a much smaller size to not look like a weeble. If it makes it sound any better - My BMI is too high !

bramblebooks · 05/03/2008 21:32

Oh believe me, furball, I wish I could run it the other way round, but I think the 100s of other entrants running the right way might slow me down

Thanks Wheelybug (and don't worry about the name, anything that approximates!) I managed a 4k run today, 27 mins, very pleased. Had an even worse night last night as ds had a hypo - but it made me realise why I'm doing the fundraising run. Maybe there to 5k in a couple of weeks. Then it's just the case of training up to 10k - oy vay!

My weight seems to be creeping up and I've started buying a size larger - another reason to keep running (and to cut down on the wine and profiteroles during the week!)

Good luck with your 20 mins tomorrow furball - and with your runs laydees! I'll be running again on Friday morning

bramblebooks · 05/03/2008 21:44

hope you feel a lot better soon misdee - be kind to yourself.

waving on the other brave laydees!

Furball · 06/03/2008 09:16

OMG! I am a now a member of the 20 min club!

I did it, I blooming did it! and it wasn't that bad. I'm so proud of myself.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/03/2008 09:42

hmm
did week 4 run 1 tonight. It is a MASSIVE jump from week 3, too much IMO. I couldn't manage the last 5 minute run, I walked about half of it. I reckon I'm going to stick on week 4 for 2 weeks, do as much of it as I can this week and aim for the full 5 minutes next week.

am quite pissed off

I have not lost a single farking pound which I am v.cross about. I am a size 16 but i weight a lot more than that might suggest.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/03/2008 09:45

oh well done furball!

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 10:28

guys, you WILL lose weight but only if you keep up the exercise.

remember input and output ratio, running for 10 mins only burns about 200 cals. that's the equiv of 4 apples.

if you eat more after jogging, you're cancelling out your work. you may find that you are more toned but you won't lose weight as such.

wheelybug · 06/03/2008 13:38

Yeah ! Well done Furball - you rock

MrsJC - Don't beat yourself up about it - stick to it and you'll get there..

Ladyjogs - that quite depressing info.... sigh.... quickly calculates (can you see I'm an accountant)... 25 mins mean I can eat (gets fingers out) 10 apples ... 500 cals... Thats not too bad. Although it always makes me starving so I probably eat 500 extra calories .

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 14:19

yeah i know!
it took me a long time to figure out why i could go to the gym a couple of time a week and work my butt off but never lose any weight

LadyJogsAlot · 06/03/2008 14:21

(mrsJC, your kids are gorgeous!)

MrsJohnCusack · 06/03/2008 14:55

thank you!
it is nearly 4 am and I have been up with both of them 5 times now. DS has been up for nearl y 2 hours now, mostly screaming. it's a good thing they're cute...
