I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I've been sitting mulling over whether to do the Race for Life this year. I think perhaps I will. Not done any excerise since 2006 (when pregnant with DS) and I am fat old couch potato. Actually not as fat as I was (Been on WW) but more, well, blubbery. How nice

AitchTwoOh · 29/02/2008 10:43

i am gutted to say that i haven't been for weeeeeeeks, first of all a knee injury and then (just after spending 85 quid on blooming trainers) a cold which became a chest infection. gggrrrrr. i worry that i won't get back into it again.

LilRedWG · 29/02/2008 10:50

You will Aitch. Get yourself well again and then get back onto the plan. You can always pickup where you left off, or even start again.

Use the £85 as incentive

LadyJogsAlot · 29/02/2008 11:26

come on aitch.

shall i get my pom poms on and cheer you on as you run?

Hello new people and well done to everyone else improving

haven't been on for ages either as I've had some minor surgery and been unwell. Went last night for the first time in nearly two weeks and I managed the 25 mins so feeling very pleased, I thought I would have dropped fitness after all that time but it was ok. It was very slow though, definitely jogging rather than running but still.

Aitch - I bet when you go you will enjoy it, you won't feel like you've gone back to the beginning at all. Make sure your chest is better first and then when you start again your immune system will be improved by the running. Are your knees very painful?

AitchTwoOh · 29/02/2008 11:36

no my knee feels fine now, an enforced break probably did it the world of good. i'm still suffering from teh chest inf though, it's grim. and a monumental head cold (as if my head is an easter island statue) and sinusitis. i never want to go out of the house again at this rate...

MrsCarrot · 29/02/2008 12:06

hmm, sinusitis is grim, I got that last time I had a cold. Unfortunately that was made worse by being on the computer for some reason, the pain was unbearable looking at the screen. I had some time off and was strict with dairy foods and it cleared up. Hope you feel better soon.

Minum · 29/02/2008 12:45

All this illness, its grim, isn't it. I'm just about out of this cold now, coughing a bit, but feel OK. Managed 22 minutes this morning, which was great, I've managed to pick up where I was a fortnight ago.

Hope everyone feels better soon, and has a lovely weekend/

SparklyPrincess · 29/02/2008 13:54

Run last night didn't go so well...

Have developed a rather painful shoulder and running with it was impossible. Haven't got a clue what I've done to it - thinking perhaps trapped nerve or something. Don't recall causing myself any injury and I haven't been drinking! I've tried using deep heat on it, to no effect so I don't think it's muscular.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! Don't want to slip back on the runs, its so easy to get out of the habit ... at least it is for me!

Welcome Lynnie - come and join us !

ANd all those who have been off a while - hope you're feeling better and when you are get back out there !! You know you want to... ahem..

Widgypog - I didn't believe I would do the 20 minute run in week 5 until about 19 minutes into it . It was only minum and PSW that made me think I might be able to attempt it. Give it a go (you can always stop, pause the podcast if you're using it,w alk for a bit and start it again when you're running again).

SparklyP - I have had all sorts of aches and pains as a result of running including upper body aches, I think it must be the way I run. Hope its better soon.

Well done everyone !!

widgypog · 29/02/2008 15:30

thanks wheely willdef try it..i am a stubborn old boot so i will not give in unless I truly think I am going to die!!!

lynniep · 29/02/2008 15:53

Ok, I've done it. My names down for the Cambridge run, I've created my sponsorship page, and I've emailed everyone I know to point them in that direction. I can't get out of it now!
Typically the rain has started and my motivation has gone downhill with it. I don't want to go on my first job in this weather

MrsJohnCusack · 01/03/2008 02:06

it's pissing down over here as well, but I MUST go out tonight
my knees and legs are quite sore, so I'm going to try running round the soggy park instead of on the road in an attempt to spare them a bit

MrsJohnCusack · 01/03/2008 10:14

well I went out in the pissy torrential rain
I ran round the soggy grass in the park in an attempt to give my knees a rest and it seems to have worked a bit. and i did it all (week 3 run 2) even though there were 3 incredulous men in the cricket pavillion watching me wobble round

I tell you though, there is NO WAY I will be able to run any further. No way

aitch, I hope you feel better soon you poor thing

widgypog · 01/03/2008 10:52

mrs jc ..you will be able to dont worry!!!

LilRedWG · 01/03/2008 10:57

I've just done the last run of week one and am going to do week two, run one on Monday, but can't believe I'll be able to run for more than 60 seconds.

My first two runs were at night so I stuck to the main roads and gave people a laugh, but today I went to see the sheep - they gave me the same odd looks people give me.

widgypog · 01/03/2008 11:54

you WILL be able to do it ..i thought i was going to die the first week but I can run for 8 mins without stopping..It really is do-able just believe you can do it and you will..good luck!!

LilRedWG · 01/03/2008 12:09

Thanks Widgy!

LadyJogsAlot · 02/03/2008 08:32

i'm going to start week five this week!

widgypog · 02/03/2008 16:59

lady--I am in week 5 and have just done day 2 - 2x 8 mins. Tuesday i am supposed to run 20mins non stop. It seems like a HUGE jump..not sure if I can do it but I will try...good luck..

Itsthawooluff · 02/03/2008 19:25

OK did run 1 of week three - three whole minutes and no throwing up. Did it in the gym which does seem to be appreciably easier than pounding round the footpaths. Very proud

misdee · 02/03/2008 20:03

hi i havent done anything for a week i have found it really hard to get going this week ,as poor dd1 has been quite bad with her chest this last week, and has needed help overnight with her inhalers and i am zzzzz.

so today, i took my bike out and my ipod with ROb doing week 3 on it. and i picked up the pace cycling during the running intervals.

I am finding running quite hard on my knees atm, so once i get another stone off, i will be back out running properly again. for now i will cycle most of the week and do one or two runs a week at the most. mainly because i dont think my knees can take it.

i will be checking in on you all

but will probably change my mind and be back out running tomorrow lol.

wheelybug · 02/03/2008 20:07

Widgy - I felt exactly the same... just try. You can always stop and walk for a little bit.

Well done everyone else !

I didn't complete week 7 . Came down with a cold yesterday so haven't felt like it this weekend. Then the coming week I will only be able to get out Thursday but my knee is a bit swollen and stiff so might just rest until we go on hols as the last thing I want is a buggered knee ! BUt will be back to it w/c 17 March (come and hunt me down if I don't post !).

Hope everyone gets on well...

Furball · 02/03/2008 20:18

hooray - will start back tomorrow after 2 whole weeks of nothing. Finally feel like me old self. Think I'll re do week 5 run 1 instead of carrying on with week 2. Have missed it and so has my waistline!
