i gave up at 3.25 pm today. my hubby gave up yesterday. i have a patch and HE wont give me money for fags and has hidden my car keys. so thats 3 hours 10 mins down the rest of my life to go

codswallop · 21/09/2004 18:51

oh fab custardo
think of how nice you will smell!

Tortington · 21/09/2004 19:30

thanks. i know it stinks doesn't it - i gave up for a whole year until last feb when i hit a shit streak at work, and i could really smell people who smoked. i felt great asking for non smoking seats or tables - like i was a cut above or something! i revelled in being a non smoker, hope to be that way again. this fkin patch is hurting my arm - but the upside is the kids have literally stayed away from me all evening becuase of my temper.

codswallop · 21/09/2004 19:31

Hmm
thinks hard
do you think ( not wanting to annoy you!0 that you expectthe bad temper etc.. or do you think you could think your way out of it?
am wondering how much of withdrawal is partly psychosomatic?

Tortington · 21/09/2004 19:39

i think some of it might be in my head - your quite right, however i am not stomping around shouting at everyone - rather i am not as patient as i usually am!

last night ( when i hadn't given up smoking & my Dh had) he started a reat argument about nothing important that lasted 2 hours. this certainly isnt like him and although he didnt use his not smoking once as an excuse for his behaviour, as this isnt usually his style iput it down to the lack of fags. all sorted btw, he ha a valid point about me and too much time on puter - so am off to spend some "quality time" with im!

Posey · 21/09/2004 20:52

Well I said I'd join you eventually, and since you're kind of restarting just now, thought this the ideal time.
I reread Easyway, but something just wasn't working and I still smoked. So I picked up a copy of Easyway for women which is written slightly differently. And it works. Have been happlily fag free for several days. Sometimes still think "ooh I really want a fag" which threw me off balance. I thought you weren't supposed to even think that. But apparently its just an association thing, certain time and place, want a cigarette. Accept that its just your mind playing games and get on with it.
Now if I get an urge which gets me worked up, just have a quick look at the book (I've marked certain useful bits) and then the feeling goes.
Still feel its nice to have a bit of mutual support. Apparently the 3 week mark is a bit of a stumbling block.

Looking forward to hearing how you're all getting on in due course.

minkmama · 21/09/2004 21:10

welcome back posey! it's def. an association thing for me as i 'only' smoked about 5 a day and they were real meaningful ones like morning coffee, after meals, stress blah blah blah.

i suppose with all things psychological it just takes time to finally be rid of the true addiction. apparently the actual physical addiction doesn't last very long once you've gone cold turkey...not that i'd recommend it tho

am doing alright although ds1 decided to be quite whiney/temper-throwing for an hour after bath so lost my rag a little. no towel beating fg, but VERY CLOSE . did some toy clearing/throwing tho!!

as for quality time, off to do so with dh for a bit. will check in before bed!

woodpops · 22/09/2004 08:39

Yay, I found you at last. Hopefully I'm on the right thread now. Dh not a happy bunny this morning as he couldn't find a lighter and needed a fag. He was desperate. I couldn't help sitting there with a grin on my face thinking shit was I ever that bad?? I hope not and boy did he stink when he'd had it. I think I can now say I'm officially a none smoker!!!

fionagib · 22/09/2004 09:04

That's so brilliant woodtops! How long have you been fag free now?

Custardo congrats! Scary to think 'a few hours down, the rest of your life to go...' - I can't think of it like that, seems horrendous to think I'll never ever have another fag (although I don't want one), would rather think - I WILL NOT SMOKE TODAY... seems more manageable.

Hi posey!! Great to have you with us. I do think it helps coming here & rattling off/venting your feelings. After all we can't bang on about quitting to our families - nice to have people here who understand & can sympathise & make you smile.

By the way cc - ARE YOU HERE CC???? - I did laugh at your mum picking up a dog end off the pavement, know it's not funny cos it got her smoking again, but I couldn't help laffin (like you out in the garden at night, picking up fag ends in your nightie).

dh keeps saying 'your (40th... ugh!!) party is in 5 weeks! You're gonna smoke then!' But I won't, I won't. There's always a reason to delay giving up.

This is day 3 for me (with patches) and feel completely fine - dh took me out for a meal last night, he smoked in car (with window open) & in bar after meal, had a teeny I WANT A DRAG feeling but knew if I did with the patch on, my arm would get all hot & tingly and I'd poison myself. I have smoked with patches on in the past

Meal out was lovely, we never go out to eat normally cos country places around here are v crap - you sit in a massive draughty restaurant which smells of dettol, all by yourselves, without about 18 wine glasses on the table. Going out in edinburgh made a lovely change.

Glad you didn't towel beat mm!

My mum slept in same room as dd last night - dd has a v mild cough - and I heard them yabbering, having a lovely chat at 4 am, the result of which is that dd is too wiped out to go to nursery

Mum (an ex nurse) does love/tend to invent a medical drama, saying, 'I had to turn her pillow about 18 times last night' - when there is nothing wrong with the child, just a teeny hint of a cold!! Oh, and now exhaustion, of course.

Funny mink how parents are lovely for first couple of days, then everything get a bit irksome...

Is this nicotine talking????

Whoops, excuse rambling post girls, am gonna try and rouse dd now... have a good day all xxx

Northerner · 22/09/2004 09:15

Just thought I'd pop in and say WELL DONE to all you non smokers. I sed to smke 15/20 a day and gave up in Jamuary this year - so that's a whole 9 months! I just wanted to let you all know that it does get easier, at first all you think about is a fag, but now all I can think is 'Uggh, how did I ever do that?'

woodpops · 22/09/2004 09:49

Fionagib, wow you're doing really well. Especially with dh smoking in the car. We've never smoked in the car or the house so have always gone in the garden for a fag so the temptation wasn't right under my nose. Keep it up. I must admit I seem to have become a bit of a recluse since shedding the fags, haven't been out at all am dreading when I actually do because I know straight away I'll want one. I'm doing that well I've lost count of how long it is since I last had one, it's 3 or 4 weeks I think!!!

fionagib · 22/09/2004 11:01

woodpops what method are you using - sorry, can't remember - are you using a niccy substitute? Whatever, you're doing brilliantly - hope I can say the same a few weeks down the line!

Northerner I remember reading about trials re quitting & thinking, come on, don't crumble - great to hear about your success, it's v motivating (& good to be reminded that after a while it does become pretty repulsive).

I don't like dh smoking in car, not at all - despite open windows the stink lingers & ash blows in. But I didn't wanna be a newly reformed smoker & make him feel crap or crave all the way into town. Caught him lighting one fag off another at 7.30 a.m. in our back yard today.

Better get on with some work!! dd has ONLY JUST WOKEN UP so maybe she does have a cold after all! Bad mother

Mum here to help her colour in, use gluey pens etc, as have snuck off to workroom, better make use of it & DO something!

In fact ma gonna ban myself from here till this eve...

How goes it mm, and GET BACK ON HERE CC!!!!!

f xx

woodpops · 22/09/2004 11:15

Beccarollover · 22/09/2004 11:54

I need to join

charliecat · 22/09/2004 12:02

Hello Beccarollover, how long have you smoked for and why do you want to quit is the enrolement question you have to answer! After that you just have to STOP SMOKING!! Which I have done at least 5 times in the past month and a half..today im on a fresh quit helped along by lozengers.

woodpops · 22/09/2004 12:12

charliecat · 22/09/2004 12:14

Erm not particularly, im afraid to say my idea of smelling nice is scooting dps Lynx all over me, and if its a special occasion my mums charlie perfume LOL...

minkmama · 22/09/2004 12:15

hi everyone, only just got these 2 to bed!!

good to see everyone on again, got a bit lonely for a while

are you finding that the lozs work cc? cold turkey wp..you must be mad! WELL DONE!

fg, people are just not meant to live with their parents after leaving in the first place. i find that 1/2 weeks is the most i can stand in one go and that even applies (if not more) to my sister!! we're barking at each other otherwise

my mum was going on about ds2 having a cold and i didn't take it seriously just out of pure mother/daughter rebellion and sure enough a few days later.....

OP posts:
minkmama · 22/09/2004 12:18

dh sprays lynx all over the gaff, i nearly choke on it in the morning...he's banned to the landing so that the rest of us in bed don't suffocate! no sign of a lynx effect tho!!
