To my shame it's about my 167th attempt to quit fags... anyone out there trying the same who would like to start a support thingie here where we can rant and vent our frustrations and praise each other? I'm starting tomorrow...

have just read my last message...clearly a lot more cheery than the last few

fionagib · 16/08/2004 16:10

You do sound cheerier mink, that's good to see!

Yeah, am terrible procrastinator - have actually worked like blazes (due to childcare guilt) but cannot resist the odd check up to see how you two are doing! Have also read feature about sadie frost in red magazine... tsk tsk.

Cravings not too bad today. 10k isn't as bad as you think, mm! It's basically running fairly slowly, like a very old horse, for about an hour. You said you could run 45 mins when you used to run! You could do a 10k!!

My face will be this colour when I finish it tho

Hope you resisted fagging it up day cc, am sure you did, have every confidence! Mink when I get your address will post the book. cc yours is in post... xx

charliecat · 16/08/2004 19:52

I survived!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was my mum and dp not 2 mates, so possibly even harder, my 2 family puffing friends, but I went to read the paper when they sat in the garden puffing and it didnt even get to me..............Bloody hell I say to myself.
DD1 learnt to ride her bike today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miraculus, I didnt think id ever see the day she was so wobbly.
It wasnt her bike though it was her cousins, so i took her to the post box on HER bike and she was as wobbly and unstable as ever...?????
The post box had been vandalised, painted black, which I had used last week even though it was black and not red, this time the royal mail plaque thing that tells you the times of collection has been removed(before you couldnt see it for the spray paint) and I didnt use it so I will get dp to post it on the way to the video shop tonight, sorry, did try and dashed out the house to do so, but I didnt want to risk putting it in there never to be seen again.
Im sure if they havent got a plaque thing it means they are not being used, or am I wrong?
Now youve finished cleaning your house to you want to come and do mine Mink?
I have had mad bursts of folding, cleaning dusting and tidying but I havent quite got it all together at ones and theres always one room that could do with a thorough clean and tidy.
My best friend is having a shit time at the mo and on the phone today I could have eaten a packet of fags, I felt mean as being on the phone was making me rattle, but I wanted to be there for her too....split in half I was.
And shes on the other end SMOKING>>>>>>>
Oh I make it sound so dreadful but all in all ive had a good day and it sounds like you two have been not too bad also.
Cant wait to get my book Fiona, something else to busy my wandering head.
And if I have my anger reliving oil too I will be .....ahhhhhhhhh soooo relaxed.
I must say I am enjoying not feeling so unfit and gungy, before a walk, even 5 mins to the shop, I was aware that my lungs would ache, and its BEAUTIFUL knowing they wont.
Happy purring charliecat is now going to shut up as ive been typing for ages...your turn now girls....!!!!!!!!!xx

charliecat · 16/08/2004 19:52

LOL at the hugeness of my post

fionagib · 16/08/2004 20:20

post as huge as you like cc! it is amazing seeing your child ride their bike isn't it... I nagged and nagged dh to teach the boys, and he wouldn't -then when he finally did they were off right away, remember the lump in throat & tear in eye!

That's brilliant that you managed to get through a couple of hours with smokers & not feel the urge to join them when they went out for a fag!

Not feeling too bad at all this eve. Think am gonna have a lovely smelly oil bath & earlyish night, really should go for run but a bit too pooped... might catch you later or in morning... (back to school tomorrow!)

OP posts:
minkmama · 16/08/2004 21:30

That's funny, I took the kiddies to Toys 'r' Us for something to do (mad I know) and DS1 was happily reading a book in his pushchair until he clocked the BIKES. DS1 is obsessed with all vehicles and once he saw so many bikes, he stopped reading and said 'Wow'. It's always nice when he says something in context as the child can't actually speak yet (babbles in his own language though). Sorry, the point of this silly story is taht I got him a £ 12.99 tricycle and this is supposed to relate to your amazing experience today CC. Well done btw!!! Thought about you all day and prayed you'd be okay

I must be better, am rattling on again

I think whether or not the postie visits a post box that's black with no plaque is irrelevant and should be avoided at all costs!!!

fg, I might join you and have a nice bath as well, assuming the evening doesn't disappear before my eyes as it usually does.

On the subject of books, what are you guys reading at the moment? I'm tackling Jeffrey Euginedes 'Middlesex' - a bit of a biffa.

That's all for now, seem to have caught CC's post-explosion bug

minkmama · 16/08/2004 21:31

I think you beat me actually.

Posey · 16/08/2004 21:34

Mind if I join in?
I've met Charliecat on a similar thread some time ago, I am so crap at this stopping smoking lark.
Have just returned from a lovely hol with duty free fags which I really don't want to smoke. I am so p*ed off with feeling older than my years (I'm 35) and constantly worrying about what I'm doing to myself healthwise.
Have just routed out one of my 3 copies of Allan Carr and will give it a real go.
Smoking history: the odd one as a teenager, then more odd ones when went to college. Have pretty much smoked constantly since my early 20s, averaging 10 a day.

My husband gave up a few years ago after a health scare, even my parents both stopped in their late 60s after 40+ years.

I am going to beat this thing!

PS sorry to join the thread late, but have been on hols. Also haven't had chance to read all the entries but hope to keep up to speed now.

charliecat · 16/08/2004 22:04

Ah hello Posey, we have been fag free for one week today, we have struggled, we have moaned, fiona even got drunk and had ONE! But we are all trying really hard and taking it one mumsnet post at a time!
When are you planning on stopping? I know what you mean about the duty free, theres nothing worse than looking at ten packs of cheap baccy, knowing a) its cost you 40 quid and b) its going to put you nearer to the grave and make you feel so shit and c) before you know it they will all be gone and youll need to buy some more.
Right will not hog the whole thread with my long postings...honest.
I have just finished a book by Anne Baker called Goodbye Liverpool. It kept me awake for 3 hours one night till i couldnt keep my eyes open any longer. It was Excellent!
What did ds1 think of his new trike? My 2 still zoom round nanas garden on thier first trikes with thier knees bashing away on the handlebars!
Back to school tommorow Fiona, that is sooo not fair! We still have weeks!
DD1 is top of the class and is like a mini proffesor, but she doesnt like the social side of going to school and is already tearful at the thought of going back, even though she keeps wandering round saying "im bored"..I think shes realised its the one sentence that will get right up my nose and is using it to her advantage.
DD2 cant wait to get back at nursery, sad thing is a lot of her wee friends will have moved onto big school, ive tryed to tell her but shes 3.5 and just not getting it
End of post. My name is charliecat and im a nonsmoker

minkmama · 16/08/2004 22:40

Applause CC.

I'm minkmama (obviously) and I am also a non-smoker. Welcome Posey! You have good timing; I think all 3 of us are feeling decent today so hopefully we will be able to inspire you!

I know exactly what you mean about cheapo fags. I spent a year in China studying cantonese and I have never in my life seen such cheap & sh@t cigarettes. A packet of marlboro lights would set you back 70p and a packet of chinese brand would be 10p. Went on a tour around China and couldn't get anything but the chinese ones. I swear to you, when I took a few drags, I nearly died. I don't till this day know what the hell they put in those things, but it ain't good! Even the m.lights were dodgy but in my smoking days with smoking pals would smoke anything. Thank God (and thank CC and FG) I don't put up with that anymore

DS1's trike has a tiny basket at the front for his beloved and ragged Mr Rabbit and a dump truck thing at the back. Since he loves any truck, this is amazing to him. He played a bit this evening but was probably too tired to enjoy it fully, so perhaps tomorrow if it isn't raining. I don't think he'll be riding it when he's your DDs ages as at £ 12.99, I don't think it'll last! Although having said that, DS1 is the smallest child ever (22lbs) so maybe DS2 will break it instead!

We're sending DS1 off to nursery in Octoberish and I don't think he'll miss me at all judging by the visit we made a couple of months ago. Only thing is, he's into rough love and bullies all the kids pushing them till they fall (even 10yr olds) and then kissing them better. What a weirdo . I'll miss him loads, but this kid needs constant stimulation or else he gets bored and his eczema can flare up. Plus it'll give me time with DS2 poor chap. Always fed and plonked in the rocker .

I've managed to make up those oils CC, just need to package them up right and a visit to the PO.

Posey, how many children do you have? You CAN do this, I wasn't even sure whether or not I was ready, but these two spurred me on and here I am a week later (yes it does feel like a month) puff free!

minkmama · 16/08/2004 23:56

CC, do you know a shop called 'India Jane' in down your way? It sells interiors stuff. If so, is it a small shop? Was interested in taking a look it might be easier than Chelsea.

minkmama · 16/08/2004 23:56

Oh and night night all!

fionagib · 17/08/2004 09:55

Welcome posey!!
Why not focus on a day and then go for it. We'll be here for you - you can vent your frustrations here. In a strange way the past (fag free - bar one minor drunken puff) has been quite enjoyable, catching up daily with CC and MM, getting to know bits about each other's lives - a sort of secret society! It's like having constant support from people who are not going to judge you and understand EXACTLY what you're going through. Like cc says, we've been a week - am starting to feel less puffed out, more energetic - also have been disgustingly sweaty but there have to be some downsides, I guess!

MM you made me laff about the chinese cigs - when me and dh tried to quit 6 yrs ago we started smoking cafe creme cigars instead and ended up with brown teeth! My dentist looked in my gob and said OH MY GOD!! yumyum....

A few weeks of fag free and we are all gonna be pearly toothed goddesses. Better get on with work... procrastinating again!

Oh, re books: I just read something might happen by julie myerson, v v v v sad, but fantastic.

Please join us posey! Hope you're having a good day girls, catch up later xx

fionagib · 17/08/2004 09:58

Oh and cc I know what you mean about kids saying I'm bored...
It drives me mental! Over at mum's last week, I took my kids to this fantastic place, culzean castle, with wonderful gardens & a beach with millions of shells & rockpools... dex sits there all huffy and says I'M BORED! I nearly blew a gasket.

OP posts:
charliecat · 17/08/2004 10:33

Morning girls, Had to be out this morning to get Tanya to a doctors appointment so i didnt have time to think about fags, but I was awake at some ridiculus hour this morning and I was laying in the bed rigid thinking OMG if I want a fag right now im so tired will I be able to fight it...right if I just dont move then I cant smoke coz I wont be out of the bed near any fags to smoke!!!! FFS the ridiculusness of it is funny.
(So is my spelling!) Took me ages to fall asleep again, saying to myself dont move done move..LOL
Minkmama where is this shop do you know? My interior design shop is B&Q, im thinking if its in T.Wells then it would be in Calverly Road or Camden Road, if you know let me know and I will see for you.
I forgot to see about the photos the other day, it wasnt until I got back I thought oh blinking eck.
LOL at your brown teeth Fiona, what were you hoping the creme???!!!cigars would do, put you off fags?
Once upon a time i found myself out in the garden in my nighty at 3am with a torch looking for dogends which may explain why I had my panicy moment in the early hours of this morning....

fionagib · 17/08/2004 11:23

love the idea of feretting about in nightie with torch... made me snort out loud. I thought cigars would be okay as you're not meant to inhale them (but I did).

Isn't it great to be free of such bonkers behaviour!!

charliecat · 17/08/2004 11:28

It is it is...going out for the day shopping...joy! So see you all when I get back, keep up the good workxx

fionagib · 17/08/2004 14:58

Got to get kids from school in a min (am really rubbing it in that in scotland out kids WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TODAY), will endeavour to get my lardy backside out for a run this eve...

fee77 · 17/08/2004 15:34

Can i join too - i got back from sunny devon on saturday and haven't smoked since!!!!
Smoking history - smoked since 18 (now 32) gave up loads of times only to restart again. Gave up when pregnant with DD last year, then started earlier this year when DD was ill.
I do have to say that i feel better now i have stopped - i was but wasn't enjoying it if you know what i mean! I don't smell (as much!), my patio is clean, i don't feel guilty....
But i do keep breaking down in tears! Just back from hols, stopped smoking, on a diet, DH has gone back to work, PMT and the bloody olympics!! It is all getting to me.
I must be positive.
Please accept me into your group - i don't rant all the time!

charliecat · 17/08/2004 16:07

Feel free to join and rant Fee77, I am going to get my dd ready to dispose of her at nanas but I havent had a fag and i am feeling angelic, going to drown in a coffee though, havent had one for hours!
Spent a bomb shopping, wheres Mink???

charliecat · 17/08/2004 19:10

Missing my fag free freinds...where have you all gone?
Having delusions of mumsnetters crowded round a big ashtray and me sitting here stuffing bombay mix being left out!

minkmama · 17/08/2004 21:12

LOL CC, I'm finally here! Had a really peculiar day of having no time to post and yet doing nothing at all. Really missed being on though, will not let myself miss a whole day again! Upside is that perhaps I wasn't so miserable either and the cravings subsided today. Odd the way it works isn't it?

Glad you had a great shopping day CC, what did you get? Loads of stuff for yourself I hope! That shop India Jane is on High St (53). If you ever pass it, just let me know what it's like - I'm in no rush to go since I have been spending money like a demon since quitting! No time to eat a proper meal with my 2 bubbas so I just throw my money at everyone instead

Also LOL at the image of you in your nightie. Sad to say, I think I've also been there (not at night though, can't bear the creepy crawlies). I remember at uni a friend and I ran out and we scooped the baccy from the butts and had no rizla so made do with writing paper. Tasted like crap! I now know what burning paper tastes like. THat can't be good either can it?!! (also since there were no filters in this episode, the baccy kept flying into our mouths, may as well ahve eaten the damn stuff)

Did you have a run fg? you know i've been saying that i'll ahve a bath for like 3 wks now and STILL have not made it for a soak (i'd like you all to know that i do actually shower instead ) Was it nice having the kids back at school - apart from yesterday of course? oh and thanks for hte book, i'm posting out your oils tomorrow because i couldn't use the local po as I couldn't get the double buggy through the door!! will go into croydon instead!

Fee77 - you can't join until you DO rant! I hope I haven't bored you with this super long message and put you off joining us! How are you feeling today and why are you even bothering to diet at a crucial time like this?!! SELF INDULGE YOURSELF

charliecat · 17/08/2004 21:33

Ah, what a relief you havent all abanodoned me!
Glad you had a good day, as i was doing my hoovering earlier I was thinking about what it would be like to be you with the 2 very young babas and ohhhhhhh you are brave! My 2 had 3 years between them(to the day!) and it was nice that the big one could get wipes and stuff, you must have 2 lots of smelly bums and 2 covered in food after smearing it everywhere..such hard work! Well Done You!
And you two Fiona with twins, blinking eck!!!
Well i did spend loads, mostly for the kids, 15 pairs of knickers for Tasha as hers were leaving red marks so were obviously too small poor child, 5 pairs for Tanya. A pack of 2 nightys each, a T-Shirt for my brother, a pile of stuff for my mums budgies, some smellys for my 1 year old cousins birthday at his mummys request, some chalks for the kids in the garden, my mum a wrist brace thing as shes got arthritis and for me a 50p cat shaped hanging basket. DP got a dvd player!
Im trying to work out if High Street, is the High Street or is the road the train stations on, probably the train station road. I will take a look next time im in town.
Poor little Tanya has a dodgy chest and has been referred to the hospital to see a consultant, the doctor said, she doesnt need to be in hospital at the moment...and I thought WWHHHAATTT it didnt occur to me that she might.
Wanted a fag then, but thought oh yeah, thatdd really hekp us both wouldnt it, and in Pets at Home car park it was just me and the baccy in the car...and i couldnt look at it for fear it might make me smoke it. LOL.
Good thing is, I didnt want to...hows everyone else?
Another long post Sorry!

minkmama · 17/08/2004 22:04

Wow, you did well to have a packet in front of you whilst alone and stressed! Congrats on THAT. Poor Tanya, why is her chest poorly? will she need to see a paed and have x-rays? Give her a cuddle from me

Mmm...I'm thinking that your shopping trip was somewhat one-sided. DP gets a dvd player and you get a birdcage (nevermind the kiddies, it's always good to splurge on them) what the heck is going on? go out and treat yourself to something nice woman!! A week and a bit smoke-free definitely warrants it (that's what i keep telling myself )

Has your mum tried a tens machine? apart from pregnant women, they are also used for arthritis.

It's not that bad looking after 2 wee uns actually. i think it's because you're in htat frame of mind already and you just go into automatic. I enjoy the cleaning because it takes a big whack out of my otherwise long day. and i'm v. anal when it comes to mess and cleanliness - hte children have calmed me down on that A LOT. You just can't be as tidy as you'd like with food on the floor and toys belonging to the most spoilt child ever (Max) all over the house. Seb is okay cos he's only 4 mths and still on milk but boy is he fussy. walk out of the room and he bellows like a King Max likes to help so he'll get me stuff, although it takes twice as long, but at least he's getting into good habits.

Your 2 are EXACTLY 3 yrs apart? Wot, like the same birthday?!!! Hope you placed a bet, what are the odds on that? Seb was born on my birthday so I spent my special day in labour ward pushing out a big melon head

Fiona, where are you, are you training for the 10k ALREADY?!!!!!!!

minkmama · 17/08/2004 22:04

I don't think there's space for anyone else CC
