For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

I dragged loads of shopping around (about 10 kilos of fruit and veg IIRC) and stood for half an hour in the drizzle while ds poked some mud with a stick

that has to count for something

I love reading about what you have all been up to.

Well, today has been a Good Day.

Had orange, carrots, fresh juice, veg bhajis (thanks Avi they were tremendous, well worth getting some of that there Gram Flour Franny) avocado, toms, salad, some melon. As near to 10 as I've been I think.

10 mins on the Pilates thingy watching Rick Stein.

StrangeTown · 20/02/2007 20:17

I haven't actually done the Pilates yet, but I am about to...

Overrun · 20/02/2007 20:18

Will do Foxinsocks.
Not such a good day I'm afraid. We had a fat laden breakfast for tea, as I thought we might as well go the whole hog with our pancakes. So we had a grill of sausages, bacon and black pudding with grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, and then our pancakes
Apart from lemon juice, and the mushrooms and tomato, not so good
Franny, I just hate that, when you finally make manage to motivate yourself and then your efforts are for nothing Try not to let it put you off, keep trying

FrannyandZooey · 20/02/2007 20:46

I think I am eating everyone else's F+V portions

you would think one of you would do me the courtesy of doing my exercise for me

Overrun, your migraine triggers sound familiar to me too. I have been having them quite a lot recently. Except, I get weird ones these days. The headache isn't quite as bad as a traditional migraine, but all the other symptoms are the same and I usually have to retire to bed for the day Sometimes the trigger for me is not eating soon enough when I get up in the morning.

I haven't been counting f&v portions, but I made a soup packed with lentils and vegetables tonight. Need to get back to pilates but have no motivation atm.

Earthymama · 20/02/2007 21:26

Can I join please? (I live in South Wales so it's almost obligatory )

Have had flu type thing since 27th Dec, on antibiotics and can't seem to summon up any enthusiasm for food, not even chocolate!!

I've had to wait til now for tea as there's been a problem with gas supply. We're having Quornie thing potatoes, mushrooms and peas with salad.

I'm a childminder and had my inspection today so am in after shock too.

I've had no planned exercise but will do better tomorrow.

Are you all just assessing the benefits through clothes fit, the way you feel or getting on the scales?

Earthymama · 20/02/2007 21:27

And pancakes, if I can summon up the energy!!

Welcome Earthymama, make yourself at home

The thread is not about weight loss as such, although you may well find this way of living will help with weight loss if that's what you want

I think we are all looking for different specific things, but in general just to improve our health and our mental and physical wellbeing - hearing people's specific goals might be useful?

Morning dear 10 / 10ers

I am working most of the day today but will check in later, and hope you all have a fibrous and energetic day

I am eating naartjes like billy-o so I think I will easily do 10 again today

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2007 10:21

I would like to be more fit. I would like to run faster.

Unfortunately, there will be no running today . DH had a weird fever thing happening yesterday, and I seem to have it today. I am trying not treating it, but instead dressing up warm and hoping that will see off whatever the hell I've got - DH is certainly fine today.

Anyway, I did the work I needed to do this morning, and am now trying to get DS2 interested in going out. We have to collect DS1 at 3:20 as usual, but without DH's help, as today is one of the (many) not-quite-holiday days.

We're committed to a playdate this afternoon. DS2 has been napping in the pram lately, so I might end up with a long walk this afternoon to DS1's school, anyway. I figure walking is ok in this state, but running is silly, and biking is unsafe, tbh.

Earthymama · 21/02/2007 10:49

Thanks for the welcome.
I'd like to feel less tired and more enthusiastic about life in general. I must add that the loss of a few pounds would be nice too.
My family has been beset by bugs since Christmas, as most people here seem to have been. It's very wearing and I hope I can combat it with some good food and long walks, and a little Pilates.
I've eaten porridge with bilberries (whinberries) blueberries and cranberries so a good start.
See you all later

Overrun · 21/02/2007 12:33

Hi,
Tatties, maybe I will start that thread, and then we can all self help, and crack this thing Feel a lot better today, hurray .
Welcome Earthymama. I think my motivation is about feeling good, as much as anything else. I think it also helps my digestion (ultimately, after a bit of an explosive start )
So far today, I have had my cereal with apples, and that is it. But I have had a very energetic two and a half hours in the park. So feel good.
Aim to intake some portions over lunch and dinner. Will report back, over and out

foxinsocks · 21/02/2007 18:16

howdy doodle

haven't done badly today - had an apple and satsuma this morning, an avocado with lunch, a pear and some blueberries this afternoon and tonight I'm having a vegetarian pizza so probably not tooooo far off 10.

Just fyi, naartje is pronounced, nar- (as in far) chee (just so you know ).

Exercise score still 0 but have a sinus headache brewing so don't want to exacerbate it. Did drag the kids round central London so that probably counts for something. May try and sneak in some sit ups (in vain attempt to get rid of potato sack like bulge that seems to have developed there ggrrr).

Hope you've all had a good day.

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2007 18:22

Right Wednesdays are a challenge for me but so far I have had:

apple, pear, satsuma x 2, raisins, soya milk, plum, beetroot (lots), and a couscous thing from M+S which had a few chickpeas and some dried fruit in, kale, brussels and a tomato sauce on a nut loaf thing.

Hmm. Probably 10. Just. Will have some more fruit later when hungry...

Yes well my goals are to feel good mentally and physically, to wear clothes I bought last year without them feeling tight (I blame ruddy smocks and tunics - you can just s-p-r-e-a-d in them) and to generally tone up and look better. All of which was working beautifully until I dropped the gym

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2007 19:52

I had muesli with dried fruit, six or so tangeriney type things, a rocket/crayfish/avocado breadless sarnie (yum), some cottage pie that almost certainly had some veg in it.

I'll probably have some heated up stirfry now? Not sure.

Today was a total zoo. I did walk for about an hour and a half, while DS2 napped.

Tomorrow should be better, in a bunch of ways.

Overrun · 21/02/2007 20:10

Did you ring them today Franny? You'll never believe when I tell you all, that I hurt my back this afternoon at soft play
I know it sounds like I keep coming up with reasons to not exercise, but seriously I'm jinxed
Had a huge salad with my dinner, plus, calabrese and courgette too. Loads of grapes too.
So not so bad.....

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2007 20:45

No I didn't Overrun

but I have a note from my mum

very sorry to hear of injuries and illnesses and crap days

and I see on another thread that aviatrix is having a break for Lent

and where is Filly?

OP posts:
Overrun · 21/02/2007 20:46

No idea, she usually pops up. How is it going with the weaning?

foxinsocks · 21/02/2007 20:52

thought about you yesterday F&Z as I saw Shrek with the kids and they had a scene where they were talking about the layers of an onion .

I suppose my goal is to get fit and stay fit. Have been stuck in a vicious circle for the last couple of years where I've got fit then got ill, started eating badly, lost my fitness and gone back to square one and had to start all over again. I'd really like to get fit and stay fit and maintain my health a bit.

hope your head is better overrun. Have you thought about seeing a chiropracter or osteopath for your neck/back?

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2007 21:17

Overrun he has definitely weaned

We keep having long chats about it and I keep thinking maybe he will change his mind, as he sometimes seems ambivalent, but he is stuck on the phrase "I am too old for it" and that is that...

OP posts:
Tatties · 21/02/2007 21:42

Can I come in?

My head is quite busy atm so while I am doing ok with the f&v portions, it is not forefront in my mind and I am just not getting fruit in at every opportunity. It has always been one of my goals to eat more fruit during the day as snacks (rather than biscuits ), and I should be motivated purely by the fact that I feel a bit crap if I haven't eaten any. I am not trying to lose weight - just feel better and maybe tone up a bit. So my goal for exercise atm is just to get back to pilates once a week as my tummy looked so much better after doing it for a couple of months.

Are you ok Franny love?

NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2007 21:45

I am still here, if it helps. I had some leftover stir fry, and then some root veg crisps ... do those count? Big pile of citrus coming tomorrow, I really need a lot of citrus these days.

I have to cook some artichokes, actually. I don't see the point of them really, but still. Oh, god, and salsify. If there ever was proof that old vegetables that nobody eats any more aren't worth the hassle, that veg does it.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2007 21:46

I'm sorry your DS has finally weaned. My DS2 seems to be showing signs of losing interest. He wants DH to put him to bed with a story, and didn't feed that much tonight.

I am completely knackered.

When are you coming to London, Frances? I have some clothes of yours and also some tiny weird cutting boards on a stand ...
