For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

What the hell is salsify anyway? I first heard of it when I was waitressing in France and when I tried to get people to explain what it was, all they could come up with was "salsifis" I just wanted a simple comparison to another vegetable

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 07:23

Ah, well, it's pointless. And I don't know what veg it's like, but I can tell you what it looks like and so on.

It's a long thing root veg, looks a fair bit like a cigar, although much longer. It needs to be washed, parboiled, blanched, peeled (peel more or less rubs off), then cooked.

It is starchy. In theory, it tastes like oysters. It is the basis (I think) of fake oyster soup.

I normally use it to make a nice starchy soup with leeks or something.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 07:45

Oh, and today I have had my breakfast muesli. No idea what I'm eating the rest of the day, but I'm planning on running this morning. I don't feel very very ill any more. DH will pick up DS2 from the co-op and walk him to DS1's school, so I won't be doing any of that today.

(And DH is out tonight at some event, so I'll be managing on my own then.)

FrannyandZooey · 22/02/2007 08:46

Morning all

thanks for the sympathy; I am ok with it mostly, except when he starts talking about it and I think he has changed his mind, but then doesn't

I had a good run at it really, I have probably breastfed him for longer than most women do in their entire lives

God no actually that is just more depressing...

Anyway! Am going to ring the gym today. Oh yes.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 13:24

Ok, I've had muesli (1), and a tricolore salad (avocado, tomato: 3?) for a total of 4 today, so far.

Oh, and I went running for about an hour. 50 minutes at least. So yeah, I'm back to being addicted. It was good.

FrannyandZooey · 22/02/2007 18:50

Ok I rang them. But someone has to ring me back, and they haven't. Arse.

Thanks Franny for your friendship, you are always welcome to stop by the Yurt to say hi to me and Glitterfairy - we have had that place running about 3 years now On a personal note, I have left Switzerland and will be living in NZ, looking to buy a house in the near future and concentrating on my writing, the children and eventually resuming my career of fruit and bugs. I will stop by sometimes here to say hello to all

Now off to eat Bacon and eggs, potatoes and toast for breakfast !

FrannyandZooey · 22/02/2007 20:29

Oh Papillon good luck to you in NZ! What a big change for you. I am wishing you lots of happy times ahead. Please do come and say hello ~~~~often~~~~

Evening!

Today I have had: banana on porridge, prune juice, dried apricots, raisins, grapes, raw carrot, and leeks and mushrooms in an omelette-thingy for tea. Went to the greengrocer round the corner this afternoon and got some more fruit, so will probably sneak in another portion or two before bedtime. Don't know if I have mentioned this before, but one of my favourite snacks atm is natural yogurt with kashi honey cereal, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds and extra honey all mixed together. It's yummy I am doing better aren't I?

Oh, one thing I wanted to say about exercise is, well, I sometimes find it hard to just get out of the house, so often for me, having a walk to the shops isn't just something I have to do anyway. It's more like, I need to get out for a walk and fresh air with ds, so the shops will be our destination, iyswim.

Papillon good luck with all your new, exciting projects

Maybe Filly is busy knitting?

tortoise · 22/02/2007 20:51

Hello
I'd like to try and join in!
Need some ideas on how to eat more fruit and veg.
Today I've had a banana sandwich for breakfast and carrot, parsnip and onion soup for dinner.
Also done about 20 mins exercise on lateral thigh trainer! Plus about 2 and half miles of walking.

FrannyandZooey · 22/02/2007 20:57

Tatties you are an uber-fruit and veg consumer

I stand in awe of your fibrous eating skills

and I take your point about the exercise

tortoise, welcome! I am sure we'll all try to give you ideas for eating more f + v. I find having a full fruitbowl really helps for snacking, and getting myself a nice plateful of different fruits, presenting them on the plate nicely etc ( saddo alert) is a nice thing to do in the evening instead of (or, as well as) having chocolate

I am making a big effort to include vegetables with my lunch and my favourite way is still to slice raw veggies and eat them with a dip. Ds likes this too so we munch companionably together

Welcome tortoise, you have made a good start

Tatties - you are a bit keen today! Prune juice that's a bit hard core - well done.

Paps - don't be a stranger on here, we would like to keep up with your orchard happenings.

Franny - how is your DS? Will you going to change your diet at all now you are not B/F? Or will the gym take care of that. Phone them AGAIN if they haven't phoned back.

NQC - hope you are all feeling better.

Avi and Suzy - more vegtastic recipes pls - Avi's bhajis were a hit, keen for more - what can I do with rice and veg?

I am also working on the more fruit less biscuit policy (with mixed success).
Also got letter from hospital saying I have anaemia. Need green veg I suppose...

Overrun · 22/02/2007 21:10

Hello hello.
Welcome tortoise.
Paps, good luck with your new ventures
Franny, well done for ringing, now lets hope they ring you back soon
NQC, a serious question, do you ever worry about the amount of citrus you eat, causing your tooth enamel problems. Saw an advert on telly about, and am now wondering if you have a translucent smile Glad you have hit your stride again as well.
Tatties, that is pretty impressive, and yes, prune juice is really hard core
Hello Strange town
I think Filly might be on holiday you know, I have some distant memory of her saying that she was away for half term
Howdy, any one I have missed out
I have been pretty active today, but no structured exercise
I have had broccili and courgette with my lunch, an apple, and loads of melon and mango, and some grapes. I also had cabbage and roast parsnips with my dinner. Oh yes, and a big slice of carrot cake, must count towards it all as well

suzycreamcheese · 22/02/2007 21:14

i thought i posted but looks like i havent..

now i've forgotten what i wanted to say

oh, strangey did you make any of recipes? i thought brussely one a real hit no feedback do you just like to think of me tapping this out

friend suggested running in the morning..sorry dinner calls its late six veg soup but not a 10/10 make

laters

?(i hate that expression actually)

Tatties · 22/02/2007 21:22

Prune juice is nice!! I tend to buy it in an effort to make ds a bit more, er, regular (despite the fact that he eats fruit and veg like there's no tomorrow )

Tortoise, welcome I did have some tips for sneaking in f&v but I think I have forgotten them all... Sure they will come back to me soon.

StrangeTown, dried apricots are good for iron.

tortoise · 22/02/2007 21:22

Thanks for the welcomes.

Greensleeves · 22/02/2007 21:23

Pull yerself together, woman!

Overrun · 22/02/2007 21:25

God, Tatties, I used to have to swig prune juice like there was no tomorrow when I was pregnant. An aquired taste

Tatties · 22/02/2007 21:28

Oh I don't think my heartburn could have coped with prune juice when I was pregnant. I drank milk by the gallon

StrangeTown · 22/02/2007 21:30

Dried apricots Tats, not heard that one - will check it out ta. Better than prune jiuce I suppose. Can I dip them in chocolate?

Suzy - yes thank you we tried a sour red cabbage one, which I think was yours and v nice it was too.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 21:31

I have since had a citrus binge, and two big bowls of leek and salsify soup.

Overrun, I am careful about citrus and apples, after a warning from my dentist. Essentially, I only allow myself to eat citrus and apples once per day. I can have as much as I like, but only once. Hence me sitting down with a grapefuit and a pile of oranges.

We're all better in my house now, I think. Well enough to run, anyway.

Tomorrow I think I am biking DS1 to school, and then walking DS2 from co-op to school. I think a long walk will be a normal part of my afternoon for a few months now, until DS2 properly drops the afternoon nap.

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 21:32

Oh, yes, dried apricots very good for iron.

I think raw brocolli is also quite good, and better dipped in hummous.
