For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Overrun · 23/02/2007 14:29

I was alluding to Cods thread about the tea shop. I have never been in, but am a bit aghast that people seem to have a problem with threads like these. Wierd.

suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 14:35

oh is that what they say in the teashop..?
dont go or the bar..
just go to what takes me fancy..thought that was the idea....

suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 14:36

\linkmumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1375&threadid=282818&stamp=070223173037\this thread alludes to an earlier on that Cod started about the teashop}

Overrun · 23/02/2007 17:40

try this

FrannyandZooey · 23/02/2007 18:12

Hi Suzy, cod doesn't have the same problem with the tea shop as she has with us: she thinks the tea shop is sad and barking, whereas she thinks we are just sad

I have eaten: apple, pear, plums, satsuma, raisins, soya milk, and a small portion of veg curry (there wasn't much left). Raw veg and dip to come later.

suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 18:19

storm in a teacup innit?

FrannyandZooey · 23/02/2007 18:22

Oh yes, it was just started as a joky thread by cod but as usual, the battle lines are drawn and there will be flounces before bedtime, I expect

FrannyandZooey · 23/02/2007 18:23

I have however taken umbrage at the insinuation (on the thread Overrun linked to) that we are "People trying to eat lots and lots of fruit and veg"

the ruddy cheek

do they think Tatties and all that prune juice was just trying? Do they?

OP posts:
suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 18:25

F&Z, yeh but yeh but..in me best vickipollard..

suzycreamcheese · 23/02/2007 18:27

so again..er, nothing new?
i defer to you, .. know this place better than me...cheif lentil girl...

NotQuiteCockney · 23/02/2007 18:59

I have had a long long walk (along with the hurried bike ride this morning). Walked for about an hour and a half, interspersed with used-book shopping etc etc.

Lunch was a tomato/avo/mozza salad (yum). Had some carrots in the afternoon. I am probably not quite getting my ten these days ... 1 for breakfast, 3 for citrus binge, 3 for salad, 1 for the carrot, oh, and 2 for a smoothie. 10, never mind. I normally have some veg for tea, but had a giant roast chicken instead.

Overrun · 23/02/2007 19:04

My fit of pique is now officially over I have had tomatoes, grapes, a banana and fennel, courgette and leeks for dinner. Will have some clementines during the evening and that should sort me out nicely.
My park trip was called off because it was absalutely tipping down.

tortoise · 23/02/2007 22:04

Today i have had Carrot, parsnip and onion soup again for lunch.
Grapes.
roast veg with cous cous for tea.(parsnips, onions and carrots!)
And too much flapjack!
Will have an apple before bed.
I need ways of getting more f&v in in a day.

Overrun · 23/02/2007 22:58

tortoise that sounds like a good variety. Remember that one tomatoe is a portion, so you can actually eat 3 even 4 portions with the soup if you had lots iyswim

tortoise · 23/02/2007 23:03

Had my apple.
I don't like tomatoes. My soup always seems to end up being carrot, leek and onion or carrot parsnip and onion! Quite a bit left so that will be lunch and possibly tea tomorrow!

FrannyandZooey · 24/02/2007 07:50

Tortoise, I agree with Overrun that soup is a good way to get a few portions. What do you have for breakfast? Add some fruit in - some dried fruit on cereal, fresh fruit chopped on cereal or just to eat by itself afterwards, a glass of fruit juice. I usually have about 6 portions for breakfast then get lazy later on

On a previous threads several posters were having smoothies to get more fruit down themselves. Bananas and berries, with milk, fruit juice or yogurt, go nicely together. I think this was popular with people who struggle to eat a big breakfast.

Beans and lentils count for a portion, so you could stick some of them in your soup, or add them to your couscous. They go well in salads as well, or in hummus.

If you do a lot of home baking like flapjacks, you can always add in dried fruit, banana, or even sweet veg such as carrot, courgette etc to your cakes and biscuits. You may be able to cut down on the sugar if you add some of these ingredients (Filly is the baking queen, I am sure she will be back soon)

It does sound like you did very well, I am not sure you need my help!

I am doing my sports coaching this morning - can't quite believe someone has given me this job. It is only to 2 and 3 year olds, however, so is mostly what I would call "playing" rather than "sports"

I do get to wear a groovy whistle on a string thing, though

I have had the usual muesli breakfast. I might be making pancakes for lunch (don't ask!). Hmm, no real veg meals planned today. Tomorrow is ratatouille. Might do running/biking with DS1.

FrannyandZooey · 24/02/2007 08:05

I am guessing you missed out pancake day like we did, and are making up now?

we do this every year - we never seem to have time to make the buggers on actual Shrove Tuesday. I was planning to have ours with some cream and berries, so they should be quite 10 / 10 ish.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2007 08:09

I don't really 'do' pancake tuesday, it just isn't on my radar. DH wanted pancakes for breakfast, but I was too hungry by the time I got out of bed. (Had a bit of a struggle with DS2 last night, ended up not bfing him before bed.)

I will either make up the mix tonight before bed and fridge it, or get up early tomorrow for it.

Fillyjonk · 24/02/2007 08:27

I have been in london for pancake week

not huuuge amounts of fruit and veg eaten, really

my services are much in demand among my london cronies, being, as I am, a Master Pancake Maker

I hope you all behaved in my absence

ps nqc and other knitters. Loop. Rather splendid shop, IMO. Though crap on kid friendlyness sadly.
