For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

tortoise · 24/02/2007 20:55

Thanks. lots of new things to try there! Never had butternut squash! or lentils!

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 09:27

hmm i go away for a bit and this thread just gets too fast paced for me

i like lentils

FrannyandZooey · 25/02/2007 09:31

Good morning, we are going to a birthday party this morning, which starts with a big birthday cake, and then moves on to ceramic painting. For 4 year olds. This could be interesting, I feel.

I had a lie in till 9 am and haven't had breakfast yet so must get my arse in gear. God it's 9.30, I really must get my arse in gear.

I love birthday parties, especially when someone else will have to pick up the shards of china after the sugar crazed rampage of a gang of guerilla 4 year olds

argree on the soup front..dont feel right if there is no lentils! i also like to add beans, black eye, borlotti or whatever in the cupboard ....parsley..yes!

franny..sounds like you'll get your excercise today at the party!

made own pizza yesterday..very nice! mushrooms, capers, olives, fresh tomato sauce..shurely countsh for shomething..?

are olives a fruit? what do you say?

Tatties · 25/02/2007 11:16

This thread does move rather fast doesn't it?

StrangeTown we shall lure you into the knitting circle yet... It's great, I taught myself a couple of months ago from the fab Knitting Help website NQC linked to.

Franny the ceramic painting sounds like excellent fun.

Right guys, do you think I can get my arse in gear and get back to Pilates tomorrow?

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 12:25

now opinions please

i have not been to the gym in 2 months, except to take the dcs swimming

shall i cancel membership?

pros: its the only place in town i can take 2 kids swimming, nowhere else will let me.

it has a nice coffee shop

the gym (AFAIR ) is in a darkish room which I find comforting and womb like

cons:

it costs twice as much as the council gym and

if I stopped paying for the gym i could possibly afford a cleaner (oh lets face it, I won't go to the council gym) , which would make me happy

it is nearly spring and in my head I shall be furiously tending my allotment soon and won't have time to go to the gym

thoughts?

foxinsocks · 25/02/2007 12:53

cancel it! I'm considering the council gym (but lets face it - if there were olympic awards for 'considering exercise', I'd have won countless gold medals) but I see they do a pay-as-you-go thing which is quite appealing.

Also, if it was up to me, gym vs cleaner - well, there's no option really is there.

I've been avoiding this thread out of guilt . I made an orange drizzle cake last week (it's motherinferior's fault - she gave me the recipe!) and a huge coffee cake yesterday for our guests and I have errm eating rather a lot cake at the expense of fruit and veg.

I did have a huge bowl of blueberries with yoghurt and honey but I fear I have some way to go.

Perhaps I'll try to start this week off on a good foot!

tortoise · 25/02/2007 14:23

I agree,Cancel it!

Today ive had strwberry jam on toast(guess that counts!)
Banana
Spring onion in a cheese sandwich
Apple
Banana

FrannyandZooey · 25/02/2007 14:48

No no no

carry on and we can encourage one another (I am SOOOO going to start again next month - I DID phone them I promise but they haven't phoned back).

How often did you go when you were going?

am back, there was a chocolate fondue at the party

Is it the one in near Marks (a cryptic cardiff ref here) If so, what is like under its new management? I too would go for a cleaner versus the gym, but in the spirit of this thread, don't cancel it
I went out for this fantastic meal today, my dh is a journalist and we had to review this resturant, and it was all free So much fun, eating when you don't have to buy for it. I did have some veg with it, julienne of carrot and onion, cabbage, a duck salad to start. Plus my pudding had pear in it, but really a lost cause on the portion front today
I will graze on clementines in front of Lewis later tonight.
Franny, thats so annoying about them not getting back to you, another phone call from you is in order methinks?
Tortoise, glad you like the recipes, let me know if you try one Suzy, Franny, as stated previously, I too like lentils in soups, but its a bit samey to have them in every soup you make, don't you think?

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2007 19:25

no its the one near the newport road, overun

i want to know what the one in town is like also.

Overrun · 25/02/2007 19:34

I was wondering about the one near the marks in Llanishen. I know the one you mean by Newport road though

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2007 19:48

do you mean david lloyd overun?

its ok, you can say it

Overrun · 25/02/2007 19:53

yep, I did mean the David de Lloyd, its hilarious all this cloack and dagger stuff we do. As we are being open about such things the other one used to be a Living well, but now has a ridiculous name beginning with B

FrannyandZooey · 25/02/2007 20:13

Overrun I don't eat much soup, and I only know how to cook lentil ones

The thing about the gym is, if I wait until the 10th I can have a free personal training session; it hardly seems worth hassling them about it between now and then, to possibly get an appointment god knows when...

Am being a bit crap though, I know. Ok I MAY phone them again.

StrangeTown · 25/02/2007 20:40

Filly another vote here for sacking the gym. Much better to find something you enjoy doing instead if poss. I'm one of those people that need watching when I excercise, I like the teacher telling me how well I am doing so prefer classes and clubs to just going to the gym.

Had a look at the knitting site thanks Tatties and NCQ - it looks a bit complicated, will just think about it somemore. Hope you haven't had anymore migraines?

Today had melon, leeks, parsnips, carrots, broc, orange and baked plums - lovely. Done pilates.

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2007 20:52

ah herein lies the problem, i don't think i enjoy ANY exercise really

oh that is a lie I like yoga and dance type stuff but..,

i think I need to go to the gym, the question is, do i pay for the membership in the hope that it will motivate me to go? it hasn't thus far...

StrangeTown · 25/02/2007 20:58

My friends and I did a Street Dance class and sad as it sounds it was actually very good and challenging. We took turns in driving to ensure everyone went and you couldn't just miss a week as the routine progressed too much without you. They stopped the class but was great whilst it lasted - do the gym do good classes that fit in your schedule?

NotQuiteCockney · 25/02/2007 21:00

I have had no exercise today, but did have some veg (ratatouille, and the usual citrus binge). Tomorrow will be business as usual (shift at the co-op, followed by long long walk - probably co-op->home->school).

I'm pretty anti-gym. Try to find classes (or a tape?) that works with what you enjoy. I never really got into gyms, but find running, biking, walking, and the occasional Tae Bo tape, works well for me. Well, I do have a Belly Dancing thing somewhere, but haven't quite worked up the courage ...

suzycreamcheese · 25/02/2007 22:22

overrun..your probably right on the lentil overkill but i routinely, unthinkingly put them in soups stews as we dont eat meat..so good source of iron..

...and all my veg soups are mainly 'what we have in cupboard' which works as is good way of keeping the other bits varied

and am sorry, you cant beat lentil lemon and tomato soup....for simplicity, ready ingredients and tasty, oh too right missus!
