For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

I know pulses count as 1 portion but I was not convinced about seeds. Do you have a link?

HC is not omniscient. She doesn't know where I've hidden the party rings.

I think you had better sit down and lift weights, Filly. You could start by swinging the laptop over your head.

I've had plum, melon, apple, clementine, raisins. Oh and soya milk, that probably counts as a pulse, doesn't it?

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:34

my ds calls soya milk "soil milk". I must say he has a point.

I don't have a laptop. I do have two kids though, I could just lift them, I suppose. Oh hang on, I do.

Yesterday 10 000 steps, 90% of them carrying dd in her fecking shitey crappy sling-eazy (clear mislabeling there).

Hmmm. I want a magic solution, you see, not one requiring work.

ps, hc must be omnisicnt, otherwise god has lied.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:35

another satsuma...and more fruit of the cocoa tree...

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:39

ah ok. Seeds count towards the pulses quota.

here

I didn't actually eat any other pulses yesterday, note.

Theres a good new scientist article about anti-oxidants and how they work in fruit/veg but not in supplements if anyone is interested.

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 07:44

Oh you are marvellous Filly

I don't know what I have done without you to talk crap to in the mornings

10,000 steps counts as your 10 mins exercise, btw, I am making an executive ruling. What exactly are you trying to achieve, anyway? General better fitness? Or just to eat the fruit of the cocoa tree without turning into the potato of the couch tree?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 07:46

You know that link does not say that nuts and seeds are pulses, or vegetables. It just mentions them in passing as a healthy food:

"Pulses include beans, lentils and peas. They are a low-fat source of protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals and they count as a portion of fruit and veg.

Nuts and seeds are a tasty source of protein and other nutrients"

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:49

"A pulse is an edible seed that grows in a pod"

surely that, by implication, includes all edible seeds?

unlesshere is something especially significant about growing in a pod?

why the feck would seeds not be included? hmmm...

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 07:51

Look, we both know seeds are fab, yes? You just can't count them towards the 10 on here. Start your own seeds thread if you don't like it

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:55

i'm sure they are but google is not backing me up.

how are they defining "pod" anyway?

its all about the antioxidants. plants have to deal with lots of free radicals, seeing as how they produce oxygen in photosynthesis. so they have lots of antioxidants. wtf would seeds not have the same effect? and why are pulses only one portion? when dried fruit is more? And are the rules about nothing counting for morr than 2 portions being enforced?

(am Virgo, need rules to feel good about myself)

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 07:58

Filly, you didn't need to tell us you were a Virgo. It sort of shines through, my dear

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:59

oh dear, am coming over all sciency now

i give up

i can't find it

seriously, what i want is to a. eat a better range of foods and b. sort myself out with some aerobic exercise. am buggered if i know how though. have velcro baby and velcro toddler (attatchment parenting makes them more independent, aye right)

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 08:00

am going now.

I would like to be more laid back but would worry i wasn't doing enough things.

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 08:02

a) you eat perfectly well

b) you need to get shot of them for half an hour. Just wait till they are in bed and go for a walk? (I know, I know, I have only just managed to get to this stage myself and ds is 3.5 - but he is scarily independent, finally)

OP posts:
FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 08:07

"you need to get shot of them for half an hour. Just wait till they are in bed and go for a walk?"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

oh franny, how i have missed you.

ps my veg intake is actually quite crappy. but its really the exercise.

perhaps god can help.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 08:07

how the feck did THAT happen?

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 08:10

You were obviously so distracted with your bitter laughter that you leant on the space bar

Sorry for dim suggestion I do understand. Walking with baby in sling is fab aerobic exercise, especially if there are hills.

Good morning! my my arn't we active this morning!

I will check my book thread TBH i had completley forgotten about it!

I am staying in today so will have to clean extra hard to get my excersise! DS is making me tired just looking at him! He's pushing a little shopping trolley around apparently he's 'going shoooooppppssss' i don't know where he picked that up from?

I have had my morning peach, do you think strawberry Jam and Apricot filled wheat cereal counts?

Pan1 · 08/09/2006 08:37

Have we got the 'science bit' sorted now? No more thinly-disguised rucking?? Ok.

So far whizzed a banana, kiwi, peach with a yoghurt. Am told by people who know better this only counts one.......

Charleesunnysunsun · 08/09/2006 09:05

Sorry!

RA RA! POM POM! RA RA! POM POM!

Especially for you Pan Pan the Fireman!

Beetroot · 08/09/2006 11:23

who are charlie and Pan??

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 11:43

Not quite sure what you mean, Beetroot. They are MNers who eat a lot of fruit and veg

Yes don't get any ideas the rest of you. I will only put up with such truculence and insubordination from Fillyjonk because I am so pleased to see her. In a week or two I will have her firmly under control and be laughing at her hair again

OP posts:
fullmoonfiend · 08/09/2006 17:19

FDillyjonk - can I have some of your rules, I need them badly, as a badly disorganised, free-lovin' gemini...

I'm rockin' today - 5 hours of non-stop leaping around with the pre-schoolers at work, washed down by pomegranites, bananas, plums and orange juice. Leek, potato, mushroom and sweetcorn bake for supper. She-it, just counted - how can that not be 10 portions??!!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/09/2006 17:27

Hmm, doing v well for exercise today (shocker!), not so good for fruit and veg, so far.

Exercise: Biking: 10 + 10 + 20 (hard) + 20 (hard) = 60 minutes (!! only did school run one way)
Running: 40 minutes or so.

Food: big bowl of pret salad (3?)
muesli (1)
lots of grapes (2)

Maybe salad for tea, and also some tangerines. I have fresh dates in the fridge, but am suffering New Fruit Phobia so am not sure I will get to them (they're yellow and round and not wrinkly at all).

Beans etc can be one of your 10, by traditional rule. I think quinoa is a grain, but have questions, too, about the difference between "grain" "legume" "seed" and "fruit", tbh. Where's MrsB or tamum or mb or someone else seriously sciency when you need them?

FrannyandZooey · 08/09/2006 17:56

I don't think the sciencey bit of vegetable definition is relevant here, myself. I think the foods that count are the ones defined as vegetables for the government "5 a day" guidelines - which, for instance, doesn't include potatoes. Now you can get MB on here to tell us a potato is a vegetable, but it still doesn't make it count towards your 10 on here. The things that count are the ones on the links on my first post each week, especially this one . It includes beans and pulses but not nuts and seeds. No-one is saying that nuts and seeds and grains are not good for you - but they are not fruit and vegetables.

OP posts:
Pan1 · 08/09/2006 18:22

I like it when you are tetchy, Frances. Bit more?

Leaderene prevents this thread from going wobbly! - it IS about 10 portions as laid down, not def. of legume, seed, blah! >

All counted, about 4 so far, but garden clearing and flag laying til dusk should see the 10 mins of exercise done!!
