Hey can I join you all?

I've been lurking (had you all on my watched threads since mid Jan!) Was going to say hello on Sunday but thought I?d wait (just in case I fell at the first hurdle!). I smoked my last fag on Sunday at 9.30 so I am 3 days in with no smoking.

I gave up for 4 months about 3 years ago and have been so angry with my self for starting again but know the traps so hope this time will be better.

Given up is hard but I forgot how much easier it is than you think it is going to be. I took the NHS dependency test and it said I had a high dependency and to see my doctor before you give up! More reason to do it cold turkey I thought ? so I have. Well done everyone on here and I hope you don?t mind me joining you all so late in the day.

flutterbee · 08/02/2006 22:28

Hi Georgie and Welcome,

Well done on quiting, I did the same as you last year quit and then started again it feels so different this time and I just know that I will do it and I'm sure you will too.

Good luck

charliecat · 08/02/2006 22:30

flutterbee you have done so well I have been following your updates.

How are you finding it with out the patches? I am tempted to get some particularly for when I am out drinking with the girls just to take the edge off - do you think it would help?

flutterbee · 08/02/2006 22:51

Uuummm I think that if you decided to go cold turkey then you just have to really really go for it, I think it would hinder your chances if you popped a patch on when you went out (a bit like taking a step backwards) see how you go next time you go out, if you slip up (and I don't think you will) then start a fresh the next day and start using patches then if you feel you need to.

Piffle · 08/02/2006 22:53

Word of hope here
My mum has smoked heavily for 46 years, 3 weeks ago she quit with help of the Allen CArr book
she has not touched one since
You cna do it, honestly she was the most pro smoker ever and now she is over it...
Do it ladies do it!

charliecat · 08/02/2006 22:56

Fags are addictive because and only because they contain nicotine, the patches are nicotine in a drip. Steers clear if possible...it makes it too easy to take off the patch, have a fag and console yourself with the fact youve only had 1...
you have done the hard bit, the nicotine is all gone...feel free

GeorgieVickyLou · 08/02/2006 22:59

Right, i'm going to stick to cold turkey then. I'm out with some friends (both non smokers, thank god) on Sat so will let you know who wins the arguement between strong me and weak me about having / not having a fag.

charliecat · 08/02/2006 23:01

Well you will certainly feel better if the strong you wins, its like your brain is fighting against you isnt it? Bloody awful...BUT....you get to a point where you dont have to think about it anymore....its gooood

Georgie Welcome- I spend most of my time on here!

I have done Cold Turkey too combined with Allen Carr book.

Keep on top of your brain-our minds become addicted to the Nicotine.

If I ever have a craving i think about all the people i know who are non smokers and get on with life, stress, depression, happiness, anxiety, joy, sex, big dinners, getting drunk WITHOUT having to have a cigarette.

notasheep · 09/02/2006 13:42

The Sun is shining and i am not smoking yippee.

How are we all on this lovely day?

charliecat · 09/02/2006 17:36

Im less drunk today My mum was saying that there was someone on the TV who had gave up wine sugar salt bla bla but couldnt give up smoking as she had to have one when she was stuck in traffic...I said but it didnt clear the traffic did it??? Did it??? Oh the excuses we use lol.
Mine was mostly on a sunday...oh ill stop again on Monday.

You old lush, cc Not that I can talk ...

What a fantastic busy thread. And everyone's doing so well too. I'll be a year in May since I started this quit, although I have had a few slip-ups. But it's a year since I went into a shop and bought a pack of fags which is very good.

FWIW I'm a real advocate of going cold-turkey. The patches etc. I thought would turn into another addiction to fight at some point. I've never liked the thought of them, they wouldn't have helped me at all. I'd still have been relying on nicotine.

flutterbee · 10/02/2006 00:20

Patches have worked wonders for me, it was a real help to just be able to look at the patch and know that my nicotine was there. After 4 weeks on the highest patch I have quit them with no problems, don't think I could have done it without breaking the habit of smoking. The addiction has been the easy bit for me.

notasheep · 10/02/2006 09:53

I tried the patches and all i wanted to do was throw up!

Everyone has their own way,as long as it works i dont suppose it really matters what it is.

canadianmum · 10/02/2006 11:34

Piffle, thanks for the message about your Mum, she is definitely an inspiration!!!

Another lovely sunny smoke free day! Day 9 today and I actually had to think about it to remember how many days it has been. Still having a couple of mega craves each day but also having longer and longer periods without even thinking about the evil sticks.

I never did very well on patches due to side effects but I think they definitely help the initial withdrawal symptoms. I decided to go cold turkey this time as I wanted to be "clean" straight away. It was harder at first but seems to have paid off now.

Scary thing happened yesterday, I was walking past two women, one pushing a pram, and she said to the other woman "I couldn't wait to get out of hospital after the baby was born so I could have a fag". . Isn't that just YUCK!!!

Lots of positive smoke-free vibes to everyone, have a lovely day.

Lacrimosa · 10/02/2006 11:35

Just wanted to say good for you to everyone trying and you can do it, its so worth it!

notasheep · 10/02/2006 15:46

Its my Mothers birthday tomorrow-she will be 77,she has never smoked and is fit and well.

Would like to think that i may live to her age now i have kicked the fags.

Day 10,feeling like i am a non smoker.

Well done everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

notasheep · 10/02/2006 22:07

Are we all out tonight in smoke free wine bars?!

GeorgieVickyLou · 10/02/2006 23:38

Fine wine bars - I wish, I?ve been in the garden burning the old kitchen and other bits of random wood himself has managed to find, must say I stink of bonfire but not fags. I?ve drunk a bottle of wine and a wee vodka and still no fags- woo who! 2moro is the teat - night out with the girls (fingers crossed!)

GeorgieVickyLou · 10/02/2006 23:39

Teat - he he, that'll be the wine then TEST!!!

notasheep · 11/02/2006 08:34

Georgie-I have 2 older brothers who like to enjoy a drink or two! and neither of them have ever had a fag ever.Which makes me feel ugh.

Anyway,if i am out for a drink and fancy a fag,i just think of them. We do not NEED 20 fags to enjoy a drink, get drunk, fall over.............

Have a great night out!

canadianmum · 11/02/2006 16:34

Well I was tucked up in bed by 11pm last night, after 2 glasses of wine. I am a tad envious of those of you who were out and about . I hope you all kept it smoke free????

Day 10 for me today and feeling better and better......

have a lovely wkend

flutterbee · 12/02/2006 17:28

I have lasted a whole week with no patch on and haven't had a single craving or weak moment. I feel sooooo good about myself

Its now 5 weeks and counting

canadianmum · 12/02/2006 18:54

Well done flutterbee! No cravings, you lucky thing . Keep up the good work.

Our lungs are probably wondering what the heck is happening!
