When we had the Brexit vote they also voted for Brexit- large academy 9-18- Southern England

If anything I would say the school promoted Labour

So that is our poll prediction, although certainly not what I hope for.

My 15yo has just given me a lecture on not voting green or Tory. 🙂

Don’t believe that one bit. If you know your history you know that during the Colonial period Britain (England) invented a well known phenomenon called slavery, nothing else anyone has ever done comes close to that scale. Also, if you ask minorities they will tell you about all the attacks that get DAILY from people of this country. You can’t just produce some weird data that doesn’t mean anything in order to disprove what people see with their own eyes.

Chickenuggetsticks · 04/07/2024 09:35

They are just messing with you, tbh some of them on the thread sound like they have thought about it a bit. Still think giving 16 yr olds the vote is a bad idea, can imagine a bunch of them deciding to vote for something for a laugh, in marginals it could be a pain in the ass.

In a You Gov poll the biggest reason by a mile for voting Labour given was "they're not the Tories". That helps to explain the appeal of Reform.

Problem is Labour's manifesto is fairly bland as the economy is fucked and they know they couldn't fund the stuff they might want to do.

Reform know they won't win so can afford to put a load of appealing policies in place that make no practical or economic sense (tax cuts across the board, net zero immigration).

Got a link to that poll by any chance?

User135644 · 04/07/2024 09:36

Is there not also a gender difference? A lot of teenage boys like Farage (Farage and Reform both being endorsed by the Tates) and he's active on Tiktok. I doubt they have the same appeal with teenage girls.

There's been a bit of a view that girls are going more to the left and boys are going more to the right (in general).

Not arguing about racism, been on the receiving end of it myself. But they didn’t invent slavery, it’s been around forever.

DataColour · 04/07/2024 09:37

My DD 14, asked me to vote Green!

Not sure what the kids at my DCs secondary school would vote for but we are in a labour ward with a strong green vote too. Not heard of any support for Reform thankfully.

So what you said initially isn’t quite true. “They’re not the Tories” isn’t quite the same as “To get the Tories out”. GTTO has been trending for some time to encourage tactical voting.

ageratum1 · 04/07/2024 09:41

noblegiraffe · 03/07/2024 22:53

I've heard of at least two other schools where Reform won the mock election.

The reason isn't Andrew Tate, the reason is that TikTok has been taken over by funny videos of Nigel Farage which are particularly appealing to teen boys.

What a patronising thing to say.wht do you think k the Reform manifesto does not chime with them?

I’m pretty sure that if you tested them on the Reform manifesto it would become apparent they haven’t read it.

What are you talking about. Britain did not invent slavery in fact it was the first civilisation in history that went on a worldwide crusade to remove slavery wherever it found it.

Slavery up to that point was an institution in nearly every culture for thousands of years.

Also the 1500s and 1600s were cruel times generally. People in Britain were burned alive for their faith and hung, drawn and quartered.
In the 1700s children worked 10 hours a day or more underground.
One has to see everything in the prism of the time.
Britain abolished slavery more than 200 years ago. I am sure there are vile people still who are racist and it must be an awful and frightening experience to be on the receiving end. However imo the vast majority of Brits/English in the 21st century bear no similarity at all to the very few, very rich Britons who traded in slaves.
Also the Scots DID have slave plantations!!!

Well there’s your average Reform voter folks. Such a warped view of history they seriously think Britain abolished slavery. Funny that it’s still going on today though aye?

Chersfrozenface · 04/07/2024 09:49

Somebody doesn't do history.

Slavery has existed since the beginning of agriculture. It was institutionalised in Sumeria by 3500BC. Islamic slavery encompassed mainly Western and Central Asia, Northern and Eastern Africa, India and Europe from the 7th to the 20th century.

Those engaged in the Atlantic slave trade very, very rarely went go raiding inland for slaves. Instead they bartered for them with local leaders, who were perfectly willing to capture larger and larger numbers for the trade.

BarHumbugs · 04/07/2024 09:49

It works both ways. My son's school did a student Brexit debate and the students were all leaning towards remain until a teacher interjected with a load of bullshit they read on the side of a bus and swung it the other way. The right lie at the right time, in this case at the end of the debate with nobody having the opportunity to refute the lie, can swing votes. Make sure you vote, it's not a done deal!

Workbabysleeprepeat · 04/07/2024 09:50

Hi op the final polls are saying the same. They are expecting a swing for Reform. The young people I work with have all voted reform this morning (7 of them between 20-30). They have said it is because they don’t want labour or conservatives. It’s a protest vote as far as I can tell.

Go back to the birth of democracy in Athens Plato and Socrates - 300 years BC. Everyone was given a vote except slaves and women.

rumnraisins · 04/07/2024 09:52

Champagnesocialismo · 03/07/2024 22:37

Yes. It is not a coincidence that extreme political movements encourage and manipulate young people. The lack of empathy development goes a long way in getting something done.

This is exactly what the left is doing in Britain. Thanks for confirming.

Even OP has said the school was sending pro Labour messages to students.

Or is it ok when ‘we’ do it?

BIossomtoes · 04/07/2024 09:54

Labour isn’t “the left”. We don’t really have a “left” party in this country any more.

What???

Angela Rayner is hard left and was under Jeremy Corbyn for years.

Stop lying.
