Everyone at work voting Reform

People can vote for whichever party they want to vote for, but I feel pretty disheartened at the amount of Reform voters I work with. They think it's funny, and that Farage has all the answers for them. They don't try to hide their racism, and even seem proud of it. I know they are trying to wind me up, but I just try to keep quiet in the corner as I know they all see me as a woke leftie. Having been excited to see the back of the Tories for at least a good few years, I'm just feeling deflated at the views of people I spend most of my time with. They're even talking about Kylian Mbappe's stance on the French elections now, with the usual "stick to the football" comment. Not sure what I want from this thread, just expressing my worries.

Change

A message to the main parties to sort themselves out

A voice to oppose unmanaged immigration

A voice that says that British values matter

A big FU to net zero and other vanity projects on tax payers money

An actual attempt to do something that might save the NHS which isn’t just ‘more money’
( eg. I like their policy which says anyone trained in medical school, if they stay with the NHS for 10 years, their fees will be waived, and no income tax for frontline workers for 3 years to help with retention)

A just more honest approach and contract with the people they are meant to serve

But they're not honest are they? Farage is the most self serving of them all?

"Sending a message" I.e. cutting our noses off to spite our faces?

Legal immigration is very managed - I know as I recruit people from abroad and its a total ball ache even trying to get qualified people in where needed - and yes we need Immigrat workers to fill many jobs which are remaining vacant due to skills shortage here. The only part which is unmanaged is the boats issue and Brexit made all that possible since France no longer plays ball with us.

What even are "British values" and what made you think they don't matter?

@hamstersarse

"Liz Truss tried to implement a low tax, high growth economy but the unelected quangos and the city blocked it, sabotaged it and crashed the economy because they didn’t like it "

Actually it was because Liz Truss mini budget was under funded by £40 billion and came without any discussion with the financial institutions that were expected to finance this Government borrowing.

That's why the financial markets took fright.

Interestingly the Reform manifesto is underfunded by £141 billion so have a guess what the reaction from the financial markets would be if ended and Reform ended up in Government.

Reform are tapping into genuine fears and concerns held by a large proportion of the population. I think the problem has been that too many people try to shout Reform voters down by accusing them of bigotry and prejudice rather than listening to what they saying. We saw similar with the trans rights debate for many years where there was an assumption that any critique or concern raised was hateful and we could resolve everything by just being #kind. The world is more complex than this and the majority of society has finally woken up to the fact that extending one group's rights could impose on another group's right.

I think the same is true with immigration. Demographic projections are suggesting that large swathes of our country will look very different in just a few decades time. If this trend continues and then we can expect this to have a massive impact on our culture and laws. We live in a democracy so it is inevitable that the government and it's policies will reflect a radically different population. You can see how issues could arise regarding religious and cultural beliefs and the western values we now take for granted. Women's rights once again could be under threat. It isn't racist to acknowledge this or even fear mongering. We have no way of knowing how immigration will impact the future and this is a very real and possible potential consequence.

You're talking about migrants imposing risk to women's rights. Well as a white british woman, I just got fired while pregnant by a white British man (along with 2 other pregnant women), then have struggled to get a job, always running into interview problems with white British men 50+ who insist on asking me about my marital status, if I have children and my childcare plans, then proceeding to choose other white male candidates.... I don't think it is immigrants who are preventing me from getting a job or threatening my rights... I've also been sexually harassed by such men which at work in previous jobs.

Are these the values we want to protect??

It must be your work place. I’d be pretty depressed in that environment.

I used to be a teacher. Everyone voted Labour. Real sense of unity during elections.

One of the problems in (state in particular) schools is this. It's why the trans agenda has been pushed so hard by well meaning but dim 'be kinders' from the Left.

Absolutely right.

It would almost be impossible to be an even slightly right wing teacher these days.

Pathetic

But the hard left genuinely believe their opinion and view of the world is the Right and Honourable one, and that is that.

LadyCrumpet · 02/07/2024 19:43

That attitude is probably why so many people are voting reform.

LadyCrumpet · 02/07/2024 19:44

I think we have to be very careful to separate the actions of some from a society's values. We are a relatively tolerant society that values equality a hell of a lot more than lots of the other countries in the world. Those men may have behaved badly towards you but there are laws and rules in place to protect women's rights and whilst they may not function perfectly the intention of them is clear to facilitate you to work. You simply can't compare this to what some other countries where you working at all would be banned and the idea of equality would be actively discouraged.

Normal people are sick of woke.

I’m sick of woke, I don’t want my children coming home from school questioning their gender, I don’t want perverts in women’s spaces, and I don’t want any more boat men arriving on our shores.

#Reform are the only ones who are even talking about dealing with that ^^

eventually - when things get bad enough - you will vote reform

verdantverdure · 02/07/2024 22:53

Don't people mind that Nigel Farage was celebrating as the value of the £ crashed at the Brexit result,

Not very patriotic.

Nigel Farage approved of the Liz Truss Budget that nearly collapsed pension funds and is the reason many of us have to find a few hundred pounds extra every month to make our mortgage payment.

They are all wasting their votes! To keep Labour from a supermajority, they need to vote Tory.

Doesn't work like that.

verdantverdure · 02/07/2024 23:51

And there's no such thing as a "supermajority"

Let's face it we know why people don't want to vote conservatives. Their still pissed off a brown PM was voted in. I'm voting labour our NHS and schools were properly funded under them. We had sure start initives which prevented many children being taken into care. People blame labour for the credit crunch. But it was the banker's to blame for that. It wasn't just in the UK it was worldwide.

He doesn't give a shit he and Boris were as bad as each other. Printed on a bus we send £350million a week to the EU and people beleived it. Some still believe it strange how they haven't kept that promise to fund our NHS.

Racist codswallop.

I've been in a relationship with a Muslim guy and was a hellavalot less misogynistic than the British white men I've encountered in the last year!! What a load of scaremongering shit you guys spread.

Well I am being discouraged by these men from working by their actions and the law has not protected me. They think I should be at home looking after my children, (which would mean I'd need to claim benefits which they also wouldn't like) instead of working. They made that clear.

This is thinly veiled racism and bigotry on behalf of Reform obviously scaremongering about the Muslim minority which we've had for over half a century, who were often conscripted to come here to rebuild the country in the post war period, countries selected through a legacy of our own colonialism.

IMO our decent values are that we are a multi cultural, multi faith country and I like that. Those values aren't what is threatening my rights and freedoms. The types of narrow minded men leading Reform are much more terrifying to me.

My daughter’s grandmother was Muslim born. She met and fell in love with a white Christian man. She told her family that she wanted to marry him and they welcomed him into the family. They didn’t try and kill her or force her to drink bleach. I’m sure they weren’t jumping through hoops about it but they didn’t cast her off. She raised her non-Muslim children (inc my ex), who were treated just like the rest of the grandchildren. My DD has Muslim aunts and Uncles who dote on her.

The way people come up with these bogeyman stories and take one example of an extremist Islamist and make out that all Muslims are the same is scary. It’s a Hitler tactic, though he hated Jews instead of Muslims obviously.

No. Never Reform. I don't want to live in the 1950s. I don't want to be afraid of change.
