General election 2024

Everyone at work voting Reform

People can vote for whichever party they want to vote for, but I feel pretty disheartened at the amount of Reform voters I work with. They think it's funny, and that Farage has all the answers for them. They don't try to hide their racism, and even seem proud of it. I know they are trying to wind me up, but I just try to keep quiet in the corner as I know they all see me as a woke leftie. Having been excited to see the back of the Tories for at least a good few years, I'm just feeling deflated at the views of people I spend most of my time with. They're even talking about Kylian Mbappe's stance on the French elections now, with the usual "stick to the football" comment. Not sure what I want from this thread, just expressing my worries.

That sounds really depressing. But at least you will be the one with a big smile on your face on Friday.

VolvoFan · 01/07/2024 15:23

People can vote for who they want, whether you call them 'racist' or not.

I’m quite shocked at how many people I know who are seriously considering voting Reform, but I think it speaks volumes about successive governments’ failures to address immigration.

The vast majority of Reform sympathisers I’ve met are frustrated by the immigration situation, in which hotels are filled with asylum seekers, and the state spends billions maintaining them. These are the people who voted for Brexit, believing it would reduce the number of people entering the UK, but it seems to have made no difference.

Until a government comes along that sorts this out, fast-tracking asylum claims and deporting people who have no grounds to be here, then some voters will always be tempted by the rhetoric of Farage.

Farage makes my skin crawl, but he has a no-nonsense style of talking that appeals to a lot of people.

Notreat · 01/07/2024 15:30

What sort of place do you work?I t sounds terrible.
I am very scared about the rise of the far right. It's almost as if people don't want to know or don't care about how Hitler got power
Reform and Nigel Farage are dangerous, they give disaffected people easy (impossible) answers , propose policies they will never have to administer and give people a scapegoat to blame for all their troubles. Reform voters will dispute it but the similarity with the 1930s is obvious.

TinklySnail · 01/07/2024 15:31

@WinkyTinky I take it you reported your colleagues for their racism?

leafybrew · 01/07/2024 15:32

I don’t think the OP is being ‘precious’ or even ‘having a breakdown’ (? Where did that come from 🥴)

Maybe she is disappointed that she works with a load of racist idiots voting for Nigel Farage. She doesn’t need people to explain that it’s a democracy- yeah - we all get that. Thanks

What sector and where in the country do you work? I work in the public sector and I haven't heard anyone say they are voting Tory or Reform. Most voting Labour. A few Green or Lib dem. I was speaking to a friend who works in the city and she said no one was openly talking of voting Tory or Reform.

Back in 1992 I knew a woman who was working in the City. The day after the election she said to me in complete bafflement 'I don't understand it. Everybody in the office told me they would vote Labour, but the Tories have won'. The shy Tory voter was a phenomenon of that election and the polls were very wrong. This time I suspect they're not, but I doubt everyone is being honest about their voting intentions.

Cryingout1994 · 01/07/2024 15:33

Why do you disclose your vote? If someone asked me I'd refuse to answer it's personal likewise I'd never ask someone who theyre voting for I think it's rude

Notreat · 01/07/2024 15:36

JennieLec · 01/07/2024 14:31

They are all wasting their votes! To keep Labour from a supermajority, they need to vote Tory.

There is no such thing as a super majority in the UK political system. It's nonsense scaremongering made up term by the conservatives. Who were not complaining about their large majority in 2019 or in 1983.

CollyBobble · 01/07/2024 15:44

Brilliant news.

The tide is turning against Labour and Conservatives.

I don't think Reform will get in this time but it has got people thinking that both Labour and Conservatives are two cheeks of the same arse and neither want what's best for the U.K.

We need a huge shake up in politics. The tide is turning.

Left leaning people who are intolerant of other people's views: what is it about the intolerant right you don't like?

It all depends on your environment. Political support for any party is not evenly split geographically so no surprise that different people hear different prevailing views.

I live in a safe Conservative seat and work in a high paid private sector role. I can’t think of a single person locally or at work who has admitted they’ll vote Labour. I’m sure there will be a few but they probably feel they wouldn’t fit in well if they state their preference.

Some people talk about Reform mainly from a long term strategic perspective hoping to shock the a conservatives into forming or merging into a genuine unified right of centre party ready to oust Labour in 2029.

The suggestion that anyone in our local pub would admit to voting Labour almost sounds too far fetched to be believable.

Radiatorvalves · 01/07/2024 15:53

I sympathize OP. I met a lovely couple on holiday recently and after a few drinks they said they’d voted Brexit and thought it was going well. They were also likely to vote Reform. I kept it civil and friendly but was pretty shocked about the Reform stance. They were going on a bit about immigrants and benefits…

i work in professional services and think the majority of close colleagues are likely to vote labour /libdem. I’m sure there will be a few exceptions. Privately educated son is canvassing for labour too.

Frosty1000 · 01/07/2024 15:57

Let them get on with it I'd say with a clear conscious that you aren't joining them 🙂

Drivingmissmarigold · 01/07/2024 15:58

Whenever people start talking politics in my work I walk away. It's not a topic for the workplace. I have a rule never to engage in political discussions at work. It's has served me well for the last 35 years.

mitogoshi · 01/07/2024 16:02

Far from common, everyone I know is voting labour, even die hard tories who didn't vote for Blair

Solymoly · 01/07/2024 16:04

I do find it a bit weird that people at work are all saying who they are voting for, must be the TikTok generation, maybe they do a little video as well

Agreed a rather posh albeit lovely lady at work said something along the lines of "oh we may well have a new prime minister this time next week" she said it in a rather jolly tone but I'm fairly sure if I had to guess she votes Tory. Netherthe less none of my business I just have a dry response like "mmm yeah maybe" and changed the subject

Part of being a grown up is the ability to tolerate a view that is opposite to your own without having a breakdown

This.

I used to vote Labour but I don't anymore. Sick to death of the way that so many Labour voters are so intolerant and dickish about anyone who doesn't agree with them. It's not a good look.

I'm voting Green this time.

TheShyPeachKoala · 01/07/2024 16:18

Just because you vote Reform certainly does not mean you are racist. What has happened to being patriotic and doing what is right for our country?

Pemba · 01/07/2024 16:20

@WinkyTinky Not liking Reform doesn't make you a 'woke leftie' just a decent normal person with a few brain cells and awareness!

Poor you, having to work with them. I am interested to know what type of organisation you're working in, and what sort of level of education your coworkers have, on average?

TheShyPeachKoala · 01/07/2024 16:21

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/07/2024 14:56

Where to start….

Unbelievable. None so blind as those that won't see.

How is voting for Reform patriotic?
