General election 2024

Women voting for Labour?

bearsbritches · 04/06/2024 09:40

To wonder why women would be voting for Labour when they support trans rights over women's rights? I am concerned we are going to descend even further into all of this 'woke' madness and it is women who bear the brunt.

Starmer has back peddled on the self ID policy all of a sudden before the election, shock, but we can't trust that.

I certainly won't be voting for the Tories and can't bring myself to vote Labour for many reasons. Where does that leave disillusioned voters?

That article is behind a pay wall, so I can't read it, I'm afraid.

IClaudine · 04/06/2024 20:34

I can see it is from 2021 and has a typo in the headline, though!

pointythings · 04/06/2024 20:44

Well, the Telegraph is never going to talk sense about a prominent Labour politician, are they?

iamreallyabee · 04/06/2024 21:05

Trans equality is unstoppable. You need to accept it. The Scottish Nationalist Party has improved my life so much in the past 5 years there's no denying it, but I'm voting for Labour because I refuse to give up on you people

Rosaluxemberg · 04/06/2024 21:09

Ah the telegraph, that well known defender of the northern working class.
Most tory MNetters hate AR. They’ve used the most disgusting insults to mock her in the past, accent, dress sense, lack of intelligence whilst reassuring us that the tories are more in tune with the red bloody wall. Seems that she’s not the right kind of wc woman, too gobby by far I expect. Such mind blowing hypocrisy.

Gemmahearts94 · 04/06/2024 22:40

Like someone said before I'm unfortunately not in a position to be able to be worried about trans women being in my bathroom as a major issue, I'm more concerned about being able to pay the bills, feed my family and not have my children enlisted into the army, those to me are bigger issues. And that's why I vote labour

movingonsaturday · 04/06/2024 23:22

Labour will get in so vote Tory all you like, it will be wasted.

It was a joke, watch the clip. I've never seen a more confused explanation of what a woman is than Kemi Badenochs 😂

Have you listened to Monday’s News Agents podcast? The discussion about it there is right on the money.

I think I will be voting for Reform after reading their policies.

That’s great(!) Swap one group of fascists for a worse group of fascists. Bravo(!)

It makes me laugh that you say you are concerned about women’s rights and in the next breath you think voting reform is the answer 🤣🤣 Reform are the kind of party who thinks that rape is acceptable within a marriage.

Underthinker · 05/06/2024 06:56

I'm male. But this will be my first time not voting Labour at a GE, and it is due to their crappy position on gender and women's rights.

Is that why you have called yourself underthinker? Nice! Very clever.

Who are you going to vote for instead under?

Underthinker · 05/06/2024 08:31

@Foodusername as it happens it's my username carried over from years of posting on the guardian on general lefty topics before I got banned for life for, among other things, disputing the claim that Eddie Izzard was initially female. (Abuse apparently)

@CassieMaddox I'll see who's standing. Most likely a smaller party or independent.

Mumtoteensargh · 05/06/2024 10:25

Until Labour can guarantee that they will look after Single sex Spaces they will not get my vote.

I find it incredible anyone would disregard Labour's nutty and yellow-bellied stance on this. It's not just women's rights, it's the broader issue that Starmer is prepared to repeat the lie with a straight face that some women have dicks. That says to me he's not the man to take charge of any of our other many issues - but I wouldn't vote Labour anyway, and agree the Tories have been appalling.'

I personally find this stance ridiculous. Whether Starmer believes 'some women have dicks' or not, not sure what has that got to do with the rest of his policies which are much more broad and far-reaching into people's lives than what genitalia people have and how they feel about themselves. I find the level of interest into this by some people so fascinating, I really couldn't give a damn how people want to identify and what body parts they have over all the other horrendous things going on in the world.

...And if you're neither voting for Tory or Labour your vote is going to be realistically wasted anyway tbh. Neither are perfect however we're ending up with one of the two and I know which one I'd rather!

Without meaning to sound rude here but is reading the policies as far as you go?

For example environment and energy is a top 3 issue for me and are areas I'm both interested and somewhat knowledgeable in (if I do say so myself).

I've just read the energy and environment section of Reform's "contract with you" document and it is so full of errors, half-truths and out of context statements that it is clear that either Reform don't have even a basic understanding of either topic or they're deliberately publishing misinformation.

This makes me question everything else they've written, and marks them as a party that can't really be trusted.

It's easy to write attention grabbing policies like 'we'll increase everyone's personal allowance to £20k" but if there's no substance behind it it's just empty words.

What exactly is it you want? Do you want everyone to have to pull their pants down at the door and prove they're a women before going into the toilet - what about if they've had the surgery? Why is it ok for lesbians to be in shared spaces if you're assuming all trans people are attracted to women and actively aroused in their presence? I'm just interested in how you think 'looking after single sex spaces' would truly work in your opinion. Should we just round up all trans people and send them to Rwanda?

BIossomtoes · 05/06/2024 11:12

Reform proposes taking all front line healthcare staff out of taxation entirely. Given that the NHS is the biggest employer in the country, the cost would be staggering. Obviously they haven’t even hinted at how they’d pay for it.

Proudofitbabe · 05/06/2024 11:17

@CharlotteB94 my point is he HAS said some women have dicks, and that's not true - so for me if he believes it he's stupid and if he doesn't he's a liar. Neither of which bodes well for his ability to take charge of the other "broader/wide-reaching" policies (albeit I also think women's rights IS a broad issue since it affects half the population).

I don't consider my vote wasted - the waste would be to endorse two parties that I think are awful.

CharlotteB94 · 05/06/2024 11:21

@Proudofitbabe is he stupid and a liar if someone's had the surgery though and then they say they're a woman? I don't get the fascination with dicks and a technicality of language. You're right this is absolutely not the only or most important issue affecting women's rights - which the tories incidentally have no interest in and actively have made worse. If we're not getting one, we're getting the other.

This is so silly.
You can say a space is for females only without doing ridiculous tests. Nearly all the time sex is immediately obvious anyway.

But if you say a space is for females only and someone identifies as female, surely they can use that space? Or are we putting bouncers on the door to see how well they're passing as a woman and if they look masculine we're telling them to prove what parts they were born with? I'm just wondering what exactly we're asking for here.
