I am on my laptop atm.

Am slightly underwhelmed by the ipad tbh..but maybe it's because I haven't got any apps to use excite me.

So what's so fab and any good apps I should get?

No, it doesn't have a disc drive, you have to convert DVDs on a Pc and sync to the iPad -SoupDragon is the expert here, I've never bothered, as I don't have small kids to keep quiet, and Iuse the SkyGo app to watch movies as part of my Sky subscription. Not sure where you live - presumably somewhere with dollars, but there may be something similar with whatever satellite/cable Tv deal you have.

I have bought quite a lot of TV episodes - mostly Doctor Who and Buffy - to watch in bed on Sunday mornings. They are less than £2 each, but they do take up quite a bit of room, about half a Gb each, but HD episodes are about 3x that size.

I know this is a stupid question but, if you take your apps off, where do they go? Ive got a lot of books on mine that I wont need until holidays.

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 18:36

iBooks just stay in your account in the iBooks store and you can redownload them without paying any time, as long as you use the same account - same with apps.

You can also redownload Tv programmes and music without paying again, but for some reason you can only do the same for movies in the US. I have all mine backed up on my MacBook and just resync them if I want them on the iPad again.

TheNightWatch · 19/06/2012 18:43

Oh, Im still learning. I dont have a MacBook.

When people say a hd movie takes up alot of memory, can you undo that? when you delete it? Do you have to sync your ipad with your laptop everyso oftedn?

Do people generally put their contacts from their iphone onto their ipads? I havent done that and I havent put my music on it either. Should I?

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 19:05

You can sync with a PC/laptop instead - I did before I got the MacBook. I don't actually sync with the mac very often, just to back up movies I've bought or update the iOS (you can do that wirelessly once you Ihave iOS 5 or later, but I find it's quicker via the cable)

I have my music on the iPad, but I'm thinking about taking it off to make room for other stuff, as I rarely play it from the iPad, I just use the iPhone.

TheNightWatch · 19/06/2012 19:10

ok, what is IOS?

Is face time the same as Skype?

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 19:30

iOS is the operating system that runs iPad and iPhone - current one is iOS 5.1.1. Each new update to the iOS has new things you can do, but sometimes it's limited by the hardware you have - for example, you can't use Siri on an iPhone4, only on the 4S, even though they may have the same version of the operating system.

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 19:32

FaceTime is like Skype, but I think it's still limited to between Apple devices - I think Apple had plans to make it work with other platforms, like Skype, but I don't think they have done it yet

NonAstemia · 19/06/2012 23:32

You're welcome! Smile

BTW, I found that the Khan Academy wouldn't work properly on safari, the ipad's default browser; it wouldn't let us log in so DD could do the exercises and record her progress. I downloaded the google app which is basically a stealth browser, and that works absolutely fine.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 20/06/2012 03:26

Apparently mine is arriving this week! Looked up a ton of apps (school, news, feminism, world radio, and some of these brain teasers sound really good to keep my mind sharp!)

Now I wanna see what sort of exercise apps they have, just for fun. Grin

I don't think I'll bother putting movies on..Sounds extremely confusing and we only have normal telly, no cable.

SoupDragon · 20/06/2012 06:38

Whilst looking for the Apps RustyBear lived [hard stare] I came across one called 7 Little Words. You have 7 crossword clues and a bunch of blocks with pairs of letters on and you have to match them up to make answers to the clues. it's american though so some of the spellings will be off and some of the words aren't used in English (but I now know a roller skating waitress is apparently called a "carhop")

Nonast, thanks for the tip!

clemetteattlee · 23/06/2012 00:07

Some brilliant ideas here, thank you!

Most of the music on mine doesn't play for some reason though it all works on the Mac, the Mail program doesn't work properly, it won't play Flash, you can't expand the memory and it cost twice as much as an equivalent Android tablet.

Apart from that, it great... Sad

Can't wait for the Google Nexus 7.
