I am on my laptop atm.

Am slightly underwhelmed by the ipad tbh..but maybe it's because I haven't got any apps to use excite me.

So what's so fab and any good apps I should get?

Scramble with Friends is a brilliant app I love it. I use mine more for browsing away from the desk top.

The DCs use it a lot though for playing games, reading, watching TV. I do use it but if it broke I wouldn't be in a rush to replace it, if my Kindle broke however I'd be battering down Amazon's doors to get another one.

noblegiraffe · 16/06/2012 19:18

The IMDB app of everyone who has ever worked in film and TV is great. Obviously you could just go to the website on your laptop but when you're watching something on telly and think 'hang on, wasn't he in Home and Away in the 90s ' you can grab your iPad and it boots up instantly to get you your answer. Much faster than a laptop.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/06/2012 19:25

DD1 is staying up a bit later as we're on holiday. I am watching tv and mnetting and she is sitting next to me watching Up on the iPad. She loves it and probably uses it as much as I do.

Pinot · 16/06/2012 20:10

Quelle surprise, but I think I would be the same (dont have one but have an ipod touch which is a mini version I think? dunno) anyway, it just seems to be all games. Not for me.

DH would skin a man to have one though. As would the DS's.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/06/2012 20:31

I agree it's great for grabbing and just checking something you've seen on the telly, or the weather, or whatever, but you can do all that on the phone too. If I had to choose between Ipad and Iphone the phone would win by a mile. DS wouldn't agree though, he loves the games. Haven't introduced the concept of using it as a telly to the DCs and don't intend to, they watch enough as it is.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/06/2012 21:04

It's funny, DD1 will choose watching it over the tv any day. She asks if she can watch cbeebies and I tell her to put it on the tv but she prefers to watch it on the iPad. Don't know why Confused. Anyway, her screen time is the same just a different screen. We could actually get rid of the tv very easily and it's not that we don't watch tv, it just seems so clunky now.

It has changed my life for the better. I do quite a lot of travelling and waiting around in my job and I can Facebook, mumsnet, read loads of interesting stuff on Twitter, have loads of books saved up (had a kindle, hated the horrid little grey screen, on my iPad it's like reading a proper book). I would be bereft without it. So much nicer to sit on sofa with iPad than laptop.

rathlin · 16/06/2012 21:19

I've had mine since the new one came out. Love tap the frog and downloading free books. I mainly use mine for surfing but I tend to not use the apps and revert to the 'normal' websites via safari. Hate the Amazon app the most. I am addicted to my ipad. Unfortunately DS aged 3 is too. Just back from holiday where there was no tv and downloaded series 1 of Charlie and Lola before we left.....absolute lifesaver in restaurant and plane (especially when pilot spotted DS's ball and wouldn't let him bring it on board!)

PurpleCrazyHorse · 16/06/2012 21:27

I have a case that stands it up landscape orientation, and use it for watching TV (via iPlayer) while ironing upstairs.

Apps: Facebook, Twitter, eBay, cut the rope, harbour master, flight control, sudoku & crossword apps.

DD (2.10) uses it too for writing practice, drawing & colouring apps as well as toddler games and dot to dot. Brilliant for out and about.

ggirl · 16/06/2012 21:56

godI downloaded Tap the Frog!!! what is the appeal..I don't get it?

wonderfultykes · 17/06/2012 04:48

The weekcal is how I organise our lives. Or do your emails anywhere in the house or out. Catch up on BBC I player etc while doing the ironing. Check things out online without having to go to the PC. To do lists with reminders. I use mine as an organiser. iBooks so always have something to read wherever I am. The Times on tap. I'm sure you'll get to love it

LaAmanda · 17/06/2012 04:52

I'm with OP. I don't get the attraction at all. Not into games and the it's shite at typing on for emails.

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 17/06/2012 05:04

Because you can let your kids watch TV downloads on it without actually letting them watch TV, thereby kidding yourself that it's not as bad Grin

Purple what are the best toddler Apps? DS is 22 months.

Spotters · 17/06/2012 05:44

I love harbour master - it is strangely compelling, I even love the music, it makes me happy.

I use mine for surfing the web and email (lighter and more instant than laptop) - I produce documents for work on it (more memos that 60 page presentations!)
I store photos on it - it is a great way to view them.
I watch sky Go on it - films if DH is watching some football shite on the tv.
DC and I love loads of the games. Last night I was playing my Dad at Song Pop on it (turns out, unsurprisingly that neither of us know anything about modern rap)
I have an excellent data app that I can use at work (designed for the specialised field)
I read books on it although I am getting a kindle because you can't use it outside.

Basically there is no way I would be without mine now, if it broke today I would be at the apple store this afternoon picking up a new one and although dh was initially cynical he would now agree. For me the essential thing is it just so convenient, small, portable and instantly accessible (no booting up)

AKissIsNotAContract · 17/06/2012 06:19

I might have mentioned this Magic Piano is the best app ever

savoycabbage · 17/06/2012 06:21

I watch tv on mine and carry it round when I am doing my endless chores.

Starwalk, garage band. I use soundnote or work too, you can make audio recordings ( interviews, for me), and write short notes at the same time, then when you go back and touch the written note, the audio jumps to that point to relisten. Genius.
Star walk is beautiful, shows the night sky, where it is, to identify stars (geek)

post · 17/06/2012 06:47

I hate games, too, op!

SweetestThing · 17/06/2012 07:48

Numpty question -how do I sync the calendar on my iPhone with my iPad, please?

And, on topic, I love my iPad, but feel I don't make the most use of it. I use it for surfing and reading but not much else.

Rabid · 17/06/2012 07:58

I'm
Not so wild either ggirl. Kids use it as a viewer. It annoys me that you have to prop it up.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2012 09:11

Penultimate for taking notes
Blogshelf for reading blogs
Kindle

SoupDragon · 17/06/2012 09:12

Get the camera connection kit to download photos straight from SD card/camera. Then I have Filterstorm and Snapseed to mess about with the photos.
