ggirl · 16/06/2012 15:49

I am on my laptop atm.

Am slightly underwhelmed by the ipad tbh..but maybe it's because I haven't got any apps to use excite me.

So what's so fab and any good apps I should get?

OP posts:
LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 10:01

Are any of the apps educational for adults? (I'm nineteen, I want to extend my vocabulary very badly) I also need to find an Alzheimers prevention game that ISN'T bloody Sudoku! Grin

Are the textbooks on there any good? I thought I'd be able to get some great stuff for TAFE.

One last question: I saw someone on FB saying they had 'jailbreaked' their iPad. What does that mean? Confused

SoupDragon · 19/06/2012 11:39

Jailbreaking is when you do something clever to the operating system that means you can do stuff with the iPad that Apple never intended - using stuff not from the app store for one. I've never done it and am not sure of the ins and outs :)

aliciaflorrick · 19/06/2012 11:53

DH's ipad has been jailbreaked/jailbroke and in my simple head it means he has a way of downloading apps for free, I think he can also watch iPlayer when he's out of the UK.

I wouldn't let him try it with my iPad I'm happy to pay 49p for an app without the warranty being compromised.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 12:01

Ahh okay, so something I don't have an interest in LOL.

This thread has made me more and more excited for when mine finally arrives! I'm assuming you can organise school notes/lectures fairly easily?

NonAstemia · 19/06/2012 12:30

ggirl "and are all the educational kids ones for toddlers? Ds is 9 ...he can read and add up"

I mentioned a few for that age upthread ^^

NonAstemia · 19/06/2012 12:30

There are loads!

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 13:15

Are the vocabulary ones useful for adults too, or are they more simple words?

glastocat · 19/06/2012 13:27

Believe me, there are hundreds of thousands of apps, so you can find one for almost anything.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 13:30

Wow, exciting!!!!! Grin Two days ago I couldn't have cared less when it arrived, now I'm simply DYING!!

RebeccaMumsnet · 19/06/2012 13:32

Hi all,

We have moved this to Geeky Stuff now so that it doesn't get lost.

ggirl · 19/06/2012 13:32

NonAstemia- sorry missed your recommendations , thanks have bought those you mentioned. Any others? Science , reading comprehension , history?

OP posts:
TheSurgeonsMate · 19/06/2012 13:51

I have had good recommendations for quality children's book apps from Kirkus Reviews.

glastocat · 19/06/2012 13:55

Ohh the something story of Mr Lessmore (or something) is fantastic for an older child and I loved it too.

DaftMaul · 19/06/2012 14:39

I love mine for surfing the net (via Safari) and prefer to FB and MN that way rather than using the apps. It is so immediate - switch on and away you go, no waiting for it to fire up.

We use TVCatchup to watch live tv and you can get more channels on it than on digital tv. Iplayer (is free in UK), and other catchup apps. I watch it whilst ironing and cooking and don't have to miss Eastenders now!

It is great for entertaining the children when travelling. A series of Horribe Histories kept my two entertained from London to Wales and back. I bought a headphone splitter so they each could use headphones. (I got a set of headphones with mine. )

The only thing I can't do is print documents directly from it. So I email them to myself and print from laptop. If I had a wifi enabled printer, I could miss out this step, so may look in to that.

Typing a lot of text can be annoying as the keyboard doesn't quite keep up, so I can see a separate keyboard could be the answer.

Given the choice between getting rid of my iPad and my iPhone, I would choose t keep the iPad!

DaftMaul · 19/06/2012 14:40

Oh, and downloading library books (ie free!) using Overdrive app!

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 15:56

I've just spent about an hour looking p apps and there ae all the ones I want for school! EG grammar, world news, world policies, crime, feminist apps, note taking apps, geography, even learning Arabic as it's always been my dream! Though I doubt I can become fluent just through an app.

Now to look up fun apps.. Grin

Any suggestions for 'mind game' apps that aren't Sudoku?

ggirl · 19/06/2012 16:07

Solitaire if you try and do it quickly is good ...well good for my mind anyway Grin

OP posts:
LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 16:14

Good idea! Never played before but I really do need to keep my brain active in this manner because I'm useless at math

NonAstemia · 19/06/2012 16:34

Ok here goes...

Science ones:
The Elements is stunning!
3D brain
GoSkyWatch
POMT
Molecules
Anatomy
Mitosis

Maths ones:
Math Bingo is great.
Math Rocket
Pearl Diver
Factor Samurai
Slice It!
Geometry4Kids
Mathemagics

We tried various more comprehensive apps for maths but we use The Khan Academy website (they have an app too) which is BRILLIANT for learning maths and tracks their progress and awards points etc.
I bought the '11+' series of English apps but they are crap; full of errors! We don't use it much for English/literacy, although DD is writing her book on the Book Creator, which she loves.

Geography: (when we started, DD didn't know the difference between a county, a country and a continent. The other day I read out a list of about 80 countries and she told me what continent they're on. She only got about 5 wrong! Wink)
iLearn Continents
Tap The Map Quiz
Stack the Countries
iGeology
National Geographic World Atlas

History:
History Maps of World
Timeline Eons
British Library Treasures

Other Stuff:
Mind Snacks has great games for learning foreign language vocabulary.
Skype is brilliant
The Swarm is beautiful in a gruesome kind of way Grin
Winter Tree Id
Screen Chomp is incredibly useful for drawing quick picture explanations on.
Mindjet - brilliant mind map tool

We don't have any games on there that aren't 'educational' but calling these 'physics puzzles' is stretching it a bit. DD loves them though.
Where's My Water
Cut the Rope
World of Goo

There are so many free or 69p apps that the world's your oyster, really. We did a project on New Zealand before DD went there, and there was a lovely free NZ flora and fauna app we used a lot. I usually read the user reviews to gauge whether an app is any good before paying for it. Free ones you can just delete them if you don't like them. A lot of paid apps have a free 'lite' version for you to see whether you like it.

HTH

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 16:38

Wow thank you so much for that list! I'm going to save it for when it finally arrives! I can't believe how excited I've become so quickly. I guess I always thought Apple products were a bit f a gimmick..Obviously I was totally wrong!

Thegoddessblossom · 19/06/2012 16:59

So- if I have an iphone and an itunes account can i log into that same account with an ipad and synch it? Can you have more than one device synched with your account?

The ability to watch movies on it is very attractive as currently I lug my lap top (which is huge and heavy) on holiday every year so that we can watch movies on it.

SweetestThing · 19/06/2012 17:06

Unblock me is a good free app.

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 17:53

Yes, you can have more than one device synced with your account - I sync 15 iPads to one account at school!

Lurking - for non-Sudoku logic games, I have lots, some better than others!

Bees and Flowers - place the bees next to the flowers, but not next to each other
CrossPixmagic - Hanjie type puzzle, probably the best out of the ones I have
Deduce - find a word, like the old Mastermind game, you put in a word & it tells you how many letters are right
Dominate - work out where the edges of each domino are on a grid
Drop7 - sort of tetris with numbers
Conceptis Fillapix - bit like Minesweeper, work out which boxes around a number are filled in
Futoshiki - place numbers with clues as to whether they are bigger or smaller than the next one
Logic GameBox by Appzap - quite a few games, but I usually only play Stickies
63 LogicGames - Time Killer -another collection, but I've only just got this one, so haven't explored it yet
Marple - one where you have to work out which numbers/letters/symbols go where with clues (eg star is not next to the square, letter A is between C&E etc)
Minesweeper - as in the PC game
Picross - another Hanji puzzle, not as good as CrossPixMagic
Power Up - turn prices around to link up all the areas to the power source in the centre
Puzzle Maniak - another collection, very good for a quick game
Puzzler World - very slick and flashy games, including Sudoku, and those word jigsaws, but I find it's more show, less content than some of the others
Sherlock - same idea as Marple, but the rules are very slightly different, also I've found some of the puzzles don't quite have enough clues to solve without guessing, which is annoying
Topple - guess proverbs and other quotes by moving the given letters into the right place, you have three or four possible letters for each letter of the quote.

I also have a couple of the logic puzzles that you get in books, with a grid and clues in words- Logic Puzzles and LogiGrid.

RustyBear · 19/06/2012 17:56

The Power Up description should say 'turn pieces around',not prices!

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 19/06/2012 17:59

Thank you thank you thank you!!!! I'm going to copy and add that too my list! Thanks

Does the iPad 3 have an insert able disc to watch movies? don't want to pay a dollar every time I wanna watch a movie.

Bounces with excitement
