I am on my laptop atm.

Am slightly underwhelmed by the ipad tbh..but maybe it's because I haven't got any apps to use excite me.

So what's so fab and any good apps I should get?

We've just been given one. I have a laptop and a phone that I use more, but we home educate and it's coming in really handy for dd (age 7) to do things on.

At the moment (right now I mean) she's learning colours and how to count up to 20 in Japanese. I did pay for the app. She was on a free website but we wanted to try out these language apps so I splashed out on it....

ggirl · 17/06/2012 22:34

Soupy that sounds a fab app..what's the app called?

I have an iPad on the way and I KNOW I'm going to overwhelmed. It's set to replace my laptop so I have a few questions:

Does it use the internet modem or do I need to access all sites through 'apps?'

How effective is it in, for example, taking notes in class and organising notes by class?'

Do all your ebooks have to be from Amazon? How do you put movies on?

What's driving me nuts is I have no idea which iPad it is so I can research, I only know it's 16G, so no idea of battery life, very frustrating.

comixminx · 17/06/2012 22:55

Whoever was asking for good toddler apps - all the Toca Boca apps are brilliant.

I also use Evernote for organizing notes that I mostly write on the computer and then sync - but it's a good way of sharing recipes and other stuff between me and DP. We tag them with keywords like "main meal", "vegetarian" or whatever so it's easier to search through them. If there's a recipe in a physical book that we have then I might just have a very brief note saying "Delia pg xx" or whatever, but with additional changes that we normally make to quantities or to timings.

You watch films on it via the internet - either iPlayer/ 4OD etc, or by buying / renting films from eg Apple.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 17/06/2012 23:13

Do you have to pay for the internet films?

TheNightWatch · 17/06/2012 23:15

It never lets me watch telly on the train which is frustrating. One of the reasons I bought it.

SeymoreButts · 18/06/2012 07:03

It's a bit more portable than the macbook so I use it for surfing in bed, in the bath, don't tell DH and for looking up recipes when I'm cooking etc.

I loaded up loads of kids shows and apps and it was a lifesaver on the london/sydney flights I did with the kids on my own!

We got Apple TV at the weekend and it is brilliant. You can stream/airplay music, photos, films and apps to your TV.

We didn't use it much at first but gradually using it more and more.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2012 07:24

ggirl, it's actually called MagicPlan :)

SoupDragon · 18/06/2012 07:25

There is also MagicPlan CSI which sketches a crime scene! LOL.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 18/06/2012 07:31

Besides games, what does the iPad actually do? I'm getting one as a present and I'm pretty confused lol. Never owned an Apple product before.

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 18/06/2012 07:38

I could borrow it for you and get you some good apps and err test them for you?

Just found a fantastic use for mine. Returned from holiday yesterday and we gave both girls our ipads to play with on the plane. Complete silence from both of them for the whole flight! Bliss! :)
Plus they looked very cute in their little headphones.

Also been used many times in the car on long journeys. Wedged between the 2 front seats playing Peppa/Ben and Holly etc meant a very peaceful 4 hour journey recently.

Apart from that I like playing games on mine :)

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 18/06/2012 07:51

Wow sounds great! Except I don't know what an iPlayer is Blush

Getting more excited now! Grin

Just two more questions (sorry, I know I'm being a PITA!)

Do you have to pay for all your ebooks?

Is it something you could wear on your arm for jogging? (I don't have an iPod) Never seen one in real life, sorry if that's a stupid question!

My 3 yo spends more time on it than I do. He loves MotionMath and is getting really good at addition/subtraction. Also, Monsters Socks is the best ebook/app thing for toddlers - a really awesome interactive book and beautifully done.

I'm struggling to find a good reading app. Lots of them seem to be American so are flash card based (and come with the accent too). Anyone recommend a phonics based app?

I love being able to read ebooks in the dark and instant access to home email.

MysteriousHamster · 18/06/2012 09:01

Far too big and valuable to wear on your arm, LurkingandLearning.

You access the internet on it via wifi unless you have a more expensive 3G model which means you can use wifi and also pay to access 3G via Vodafone, O2 or similar. So if you are in a class you will only be able to go online if you have wifi access or are paying for 3G data.

You can go anywhere you like online using Safari (like firefox or Chrome), or use apps.

I would recommend Notability for taking notes. You can create categories for your notes (could be used for different classes) and then have a bunch of different notes under that category. I think it's relatively inexpensive.

You can buy books via whatever Apple's own system is, or from Amazon for the Kindle app. There are some free books, and many many cheap ones. If you want a regular bestseller it will probably be closer to normal price (as it should be, imo, if we want good book publishing to survive - tangent!).

You might have a bit of a learning curve when you first get it, but basically you can use it to play music, go on internet, use as a productivity tool, play games, keep photos, etc. I love mine :)

Eliza22 · 18/06/2012 09:42

Where to begin?

Email, calendar/alarm, travel apps, mumsnet, photos, games, dh is learning Spanish on his, 5 day weather app, YouTube, download films for long journey for ds on his, Internet browsing and shopping, Skype. And it's all so quick!!

I was away last weekend and nearly lost the will to live, trying to get into my hotmail account on a desk top pc.

I love mine and wouldn't be without it....

glastocat · 18/06/2012 10:00

For people asking about books may I recommend a wee look at tuebl.com.

I don't understand how anyone could be underwhelmed by an ipad, you can do so much with it. Mine never cools! Grin My son calls it my electronic baby when hes not stealing it.

goodname · 18/06/2012 12:07

toca boca for my 2 year old, its the best thing ever

iwantavuvezela · 18/06/2012 12:22

Scroobius - try the montessori apps for letters and phonics. Theres a great one that says the sound of each letter, they get to draw/trace the letter - and they can also record themselves saying the letter's name.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 18/06/2012 12:27

Thanks for all the tips ladies! Sounds just what I need for school and leisure Grin

It sounds like it can be very easily used as a work tool, so when mine arrives (as I sad, no clue which one it is, driving me nuts not being able to research!!)

Just to clarify - I can type in google if I'm connected to my home net etc? Don't need to visit all websites through apps?

OOOOH now I'm getting excited! Might download some memory games, (HATE Sodoku) bloody meds mess with my memory.

GnocchiNineDoors · 18/06/2012 12:43

who recommended Tiny Zoo? The hoursI am spending on there....what a waste...yet im hooked.

Dammit.
