Have fallen worryingly in love with my iphone - anyone want to come and chat to me about theirs?

I'm a total techno-dinosaur, so perhaps that explains things. But I got a hand-me-up from DSS of his old iphone and - WOW. I'm loving it - so sleek, so easy, so fun, so delightful to use after my sticky-key'd NOKIA. So far, one of the best things has been having Skype on my phone. So what do you do with your iphone, and how else shoudl I use mine ?

ps and HOW do I write notes on calendar dates in teh future ie not today?

Ok sorry can now

strandednomore · 01/03/2011 09:12

I would love an Iphone but dh tells me they are at least £35 a month plus at least £100 to buy plus you have to have it for two years and I just don't think we can justify me spending that much money at the moment (I am not working).

Could you tell me how much you spend on yours please?

He wants me to get a Blackberry and says everyone is getting sick of IPhones as they are such a rip-off. Reading this thread it might just be that women prefer them because of the apps (which really appeal to me!). I would rather stick with my old do-not-much basic mobile than get an out-of-touch Blackberry?????

Longstocking2 · 01/03/2011 09:17

dh was playing something about angry birds last night until one am, he said it's like crack.

kittya · 01/03/2011 09:30

Ive yet to fall in love with mine Sad, I think my £700 bill after I had taken it away for the week killed it for me (I never even used it)

How does one watch live tv on it?

SoupDragon · 01/03/2011 09:42

How can you get a £700 bill without using it? Shock

You do need to remember to turn off data roaming when you go abroad - I think I turned off practuically everything when I went to Antigua dn my bill for that month was only £20 more than usual, but that was due to texting.

My normal bill is £35 per month and, IIRC, I paid £180 for the phone on an 18 month O2 contract when I upgraded my phone. My phone bill was never this much when I had just a phone but I do use the iPhone for games so much more to waste time increase my efficiency.

iPhone 5 is rumoured for release this summer. Along with the iPad 2.

AFEICA · 01/03/2011 10:57

Strandednomore, I think your DH may feel a little threatened by the attention he knows your iPhone will receive...Grin

I upgraded from the Blackberry and much, much prefer my iphone 4.

I drove a (very)hard bargain when I was due for an upgrade and got the handset for free, £40.86 per month inclusive of 1500 minutes, unlimited text, 3mb data and vodafone passport.

I heard the iphone 5 is due at the beginning of 2012?

AFEICA · 01/03/2011 11:02

I turn off EVERYTHING when I am away. Just use it as a basic handset and only answer calls that I know are 'urgent' (my 22 year old DD asking how to boil an egg for example)!!

My bill has never been more than the set amount.

Mamathulu · 01/03/2011 11:10

We're big apple fans in this house - DH's a video editor, so he uses them for work & we're slowly replacing all computers & phones to apple ones - only DD's laptop & phone to go!
We both love our iphones, use:
Aroundme
angrybirds
ibabyfeeding app
lionbrand free knitting pattern app
the video on dh's camera gave us a year's worth of clips of DS3's 2nd year, 1st feeds of DS3 & 4, Xmas etc - speechlessly priceless.
sleepcycle alarm clock's great - tracks your sleep cycles and wakes you in light sleep. Even with 2 1/2 mth DS4 waking for feeds, I don't feel too bad.
sudoku
cello tuner - another invaluable one when there's no piano around!
shopshop - shopping list
freebooks
babypiano - great for DS3 in car
could go on even more, but I think you get the idea!

One useful thing I've found is that you can arrange similar apps into folders, so if you don't use something very much, it's tucked neatly away and doesn't take up too much screen space. (When they're in shaky mode, slide one app on top of another and it'll stick them both in a folder, which you can name to your liking.) I have a games, a music, a shopping, a news/utilities folder etc.

But yes, we love our iphones!!

strandednomore · 01/03/2011 11:52

Thanks - have been to a shop today and seen the HTC and Blackberry. Yes I would love an IPhone but it's just too expensive!!! Very Envy of all of you that can justify paying for one, but unfortunately in this day and age I can't really justify something for ME that isn't essential. Sad

catinboots · 01/03/2011 12:05

I am planning my entire wedding on the Weding Planner App. It automatically syncs all the info to my laptop.

Zembo · 01/03/2011 12:16

Does anyone know of an app or other way of totalling monthly spend on groceries, clothes etc etc? Ta

crazynell · 01/03/2011 12:35

Am i one of the eldest iphone 4 users at 59?
I was in the queue on release day for the new apple iph 4 at 6am at the o2shop in derby and the man behind me commented how surprised he was to see a 50 something woman in the queue - me. I told him not to make assumptions just cause i'm a 50 odd yrs doesn't mean i don't know about iphone in fact i'm called the techno queen in my family!

My iphone3 got nicked and i felt completely bereft like my throat had been cut without it -luckily, i got the money back on insurance and had come to the end if my contract with o2 so was able to buy an ip4 outright and i pay 20 for sim only

i absolutely LOVE mine - in addition to the apps mention already i use vicinity - great for finding restaurants, supermarkets banks pubs etc when you're on in a strange town/place; dragon for speech to text ; free wifi, lots of games and drawing apps to keep the g'kids occupied eg doodlebuddy, ichalky

Is Errands better than the iph4's notes - how is it different?

Anonymousbird · 01/03/2011 12:42

I am interested in how people use Errands - I loaded it up, and am, frankly, clueless as to how to use it to its best potential..

Currently just use Notes for basic lists. What I really want though is a list i can continually add to, tick off when done and roll on for another day.....?? Does Errands do that?

SoupDragon · 01/03/2011 12:57

The one I used was called, I think, Acme Lists.

jujubean · 01/03/2011 13:08

Does anyone know if there is an app for iphone 3 where you can share a calendar? Hubby and I always double booking ourselves and would be good if we could share a family calendar that both of could see. Not rocket science but can't find an app for it.

nymphadora · 01/03/2011 13:35

Zembo & jujubeam they would be good

Fumblina · 01/03/2011 14:09

Hi, I also converted from BB to iphone and I wish I had done so 4 months earlier when DD was born and I was doing endless night feeds and bfeeding marathons!

Fumblina · 01/03/2011 14:10

Anonymous - Tasker Lite may be what you need. One simple list you add to and tick off.

Fumblina · 01/03/2011 14:11

Oh- I just had the upgrade box on itunes for upgrade to ios 4.2

oldenoughtowearpurple · 01/03/2011 14:25

I got an iPhone today and am now worried that my iPad will be feeling jealous. Any tips for making them both happy? Should my iPhone buy my iPad a really good app or something?

mrsgboring · 01/03/2011 14:32

I'm also an iPhone newbie and loving it. Very enamoured of my Louvre app for looking at paintings and also planning a visit there later this year. Also used the Tube Map app loads.

Other than that all the things that everyone else has mentioned.

mrsgboring · 01/03/2011 14:34
