I'm a total techno-dinosaur, so perhaps that explains things. But I got a hand-me-up from DSS of his old iphone and - WOW. I'm loving it - so sleek, so easy, so fun, so delightful to use after my sticky-key'd NOKIA. So far, one of the best things has been having Skype on my phone. So what do you do with your iphone, and how else shoudl I use mine ?

ps and HOW do I write notes on calendar dates in teh future ie not today?

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 16/02/2011 07:34

Touch the date. Touch the + sign on the upper right. Add details. Can use the date/tine scroll wheel to change the date if need be.

I use mine for: -

todo lists (app called Errands) including groceries, things around the house, work things

Recipes (app called Handy CookBook)

Tracking my cycle (iPeriod)

Tracking my blood glucose (I am diabetic)

Games

eBooks

MN!!!

When they say 'there's an app for that'? they mean it!

silver28 · 16/02/2011 07:42

God I love mine too!

Mostly use for MN, rightmove, BBC news and weather, I keep lists in the notes app that comes on the phone, facebook, YouTube (peppa pig episodes when DS needs an urgent distraction), games like tetris and angry birds, amazon, eBay buying and selling apps.

I know it does loads more but those are my preferred uses!

worriermum · 16/02/2011 07:52

oh bliss - to talk iphone with other converts. DP has banned all talk of it's glorious qualities because he cant take it any more...

Tee thanks for the CAlendar tip. Also, is it worth downloading the errands app? Is it any different from just using the Notes facility (ahem, app...I am learning)that comes with the phone ?

nipplesofthenorth · 16/02/2011 08:07

I looooooove mine - be lost without it!

I use it for entertaining the kids (games, films), shopping (Tesco, Amazon, eBay, Ocado), surfing the net, email, photos, music, facebook and twitter, watching live tv, sat nav (Co-Pilot Live).

I use it more than I use my laptop.

Tee2072 · 16/02/2011 08:23

worriermum I like Errands over the in phone notepad because it let's you make check lists that you can actually make a tick mark against and the you can tell it to delete the things you have checked off! Also very satisfying to click 'completed!' and it disappears off you list!!

I do, however, just use the in phone GPS rather than download an app. Google maps is right there and does the same thing as any other sat nav app!

starshaker · 16/02/2011 08:33

I love my iphone. Would be like losing a limb if anything happened to it (ok maybe extreme but you get the picture)
I used mine for games, facebook, ebay, shopping, oh and occasionally phoning and texting. And can i say, so many people say the blackberry is the best for email. Well i had a blackberry and i hated the email bit. Iphone is way easier to use. I just love it (did i mention that already?)

Niceguy2 · 16/02/2011 10:47

6 posts and no-one has mentioned Angry Birds yet. Tsk tsk!

OP, go download Angry Birds NOW!!!!

starshaker · 16/02/2011 13:12

angry birds cut the rope and fruit ninjas are a must to any iphone

raiseaneyebrow · 16/02/2011 13:37

I have had an iphone for a month and I am in love.

I love the Walkmeter aoo. Tells you how far you have walked, how many calories you have worked off, and draw you a pretty pic of the walk. I think it was £2.99.

DH has a watch does pretty much the same thing. It was £200.

Don't get angry birds. It is too addictive.

I finished it. Then bought angry birds "seasons" one hour later.

I like "Around me" which tells you where the nearest pub is.

What's "push email" please? And I read something about you are meant to shut down apps to save the battery rather than hit the home button but can't work out how to do it.

Tee2072 · 16/02/2011 16:12

Push email is when your iPhone constantly scans for new email. Eats battery like anything. Go to Settings: Notifications:Email etc: Fetch New Data: Off.

To turn off apps, double click the home button, this will show you across the bottom what apps are running. Hold your finger on one of the apps and they will all get a - sign and wiggle. Touch the - sign on the ones you want to close.

Another good way to save batter is to switch to Airplane mode when you go to asleep, however you will not receive phone calls or texts if you do.

trixymalixy · 18/02/2011 14:37

God I love mine too, best thing I have ever bought.

My favourite app is the Kindle app.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/02/2011 14:40

My DH loves his.

Except he says its a bit of a crap phone

worriermum · 21/02/2011 08:27

WTF is angry birds??? Okay I will download it and find out for myself [excited about new iphone app emoticon]

Thanks for the v useful info about closing apps. Any more for any more tips/iphone gossip?

My DH has had an iphone, it is great and the only thing 'wrong' is that the phone is a bit crappy. However, he has just received an Iphone 4 and he has ordered me a new blackberry as I like the keyboard style and not touch screen.

I have played on his i4 and I do quite like it, but as I have long nails I really struggle with the touch screen. Do you think it is because I am not used to it?

I also feel like I am lagging behind in tech, most phones have touch screen dont they now? Maybe I should bite the bullet and just get one, will learn how to use it soon enough.

Oh, and Angry Birds is great!

Ormirian · 21/02/2011 08:35

Work just gave me one. I didn't want it as I am not much of a phone person - I never remembered to charge up my old one and rarely remembered where it was!

But I play Sudoku on it, MN on it, listen to R7 Iplayer ....Sadly I also get bloody texts from work at all hours and have to do something about them! Bastards

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/02/2011 08:43

hmmm maybe a new iphone then...

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/02/2011 08:47

How do you shut an app without using the home button? Used the above tip (thanks!) and I had every app on my phone open!

Dropdeadfred · 21/02/2011 08:51

When I press my home button twice it just goes to an empty favourites folder?? Why dies that happen then...???

worriermum · 21/02/2011 09:24

I've just downloaded the NY TImes app. But I see, from following Tee's tip about how to check if apps are on (thanks again Tee - such useful info)that it stays on all the time. Is there any way to turn the app off once I have finished reading the NY Times, without going through the whole rigmarole of checking all the apps?

I do hope this makes some sense....

OP posts:
Dropdeadfred · 21/02/2011 09:48

I cannot check my apps are closed...? weird..all I get is a favourites folder...any advice pls?

fizzyliftinggas · 21/02/2011 09:58

This thread is excellent, great tips about closing apps.
Does anyone else have 'Words with Friends' it like scrabble, you can play a friend or pick a random opponent, its very addictive! I have managed to avoid angry birds so far!

Dropdeadfred · 21/02/2011 10:03

fizzy - i have words with friends..used to use my whole battery up on a daily basis with that one!

fizzyliftinggas · 21/02/2011 10:11

Ha ha! I am currently locked in battle with a random stranger and we are nearing the end, but she hasn't played a word for over 24 hours and I am desperate to play my next work... it's a corker!!
Boo hoo!! My DH has a blackberry so can't play :(... it's so bloody addictive!

fizzyliftinggas · 21/02/2011 10:11

word... obviously! Grin

coinoperatedgirl · 26/02/2011 02:28

I have taken delivery of a spanking iphone 4 today, I have to say I like it, but don't love it. I could really do without the arse on of itunes, plus I have had to google about 5 how to guides, intuitive my arse. That may be because I am used to android which I really did find intuitive, it is very nice (if a little fingerprinty). Ah fuck it who cares, I can get £400 on ebay if it doesn't cease to get on my tits a
little bit Grin.
