Have fallen worryingly in love with my iphone - anyone want to come and chat to me about theirs?

I'm a total techno-dinosaur, so perhaps that explains things. But I got a hand-me-up from DSS of his old iphone and - WOW. I'm loving it - so sleek, so easy, so fun, so delightful to use after my sticky-key'd NOKIA. So far, one of the best things has been having Skype on my phone. So what do you do with your iphone, and how else shoudl I use mine ?

ps and HOW do I write notes on calendar dates in teh future ie not today?

I play words with friends if anyone wants a game. Same user name as here.

AFEICA tethering your phone means to use it like a modem/dongle. If you have a laptop that you use a lot away from a wireless or wired network, you can get a contract through your mobile provider to use your iPhone to connect to the internet via mobile rather than wifi. Personally, I think they are way overpriced and I also live in a city with major free wifi all over the place!

nymphadora · 28/02/2011 08:51

Ooh thanks for the tip re closing apps, not seen it before & practically all of mine were running

LetLoveRule · 28/02/2011 09:38

What a brilliant thread. Another i4 lover here. My favourite apps are BBC news, weather, fb, angry birds, scrabble, ocado, bank, myfitnesspal (calorie tracker - much better than WW and free), tv guide, palettes (I am a designer, this is fab for quick colour ideas), trendtracker.

I use the camera a lot, but when I import the images they are only 72dpi. Does anyone know how you can take hi-resolution images?

Anonymousbird · 28/02/2011 09:44

Maps, oh god, Maps. Wonderful.
I have no GPS, and maps are absolutely fantastic. Uses lots of juice though.

giliair · 28/02/2011 09:49

I'm planning on getting a Blackberry Torch as I have found a really good deal but dh wants me to get an iphone. It will be a business phone and I will be sending and receiving lots of emails and using the internet. Does anyone know if the Blackberry Torch is any good? Would I be better off with an iphone?

fizzyliftinggas · 28/02/2011 09:50

I am off to download QRANK!! Have left my Iphone at home today (damn preggy brain!)
I feel like I have left a piece of me! Grin

AFEICA · 28/02/2011 09:52

Tee thank you. So in essence it would really only be used if you were in a no network area and had a dongle to hand?

Bloody Vodafone down since 03.00 today! Spoke to customer services who say it is the whole of the UK that has no coverage, yet my Brother in the Midlands says his is working? Anyone else without a network? I am in Surrey.

Fav app has to be the Kindle.

Anonymousbird · 28/02/2011 09:54

I've had an iphone 4 for 6 months, I didn't even know you could or should close apps!

This is very useful stuff

AFEICA · 28/02/2011 09:56

AB, me neither, all 142 of mine were running!

Thanks so much for the tip, Tee!

Tee2072 · 28/02/2011 10:01

FYI to all you Kindle or other non-Apple eReader users... Apple the stingy bastards have just announced that the newest OS will only allow purchases through iTunes and the app store. No more downloading from Amazon or other places.

My husband and I are assuming this will mean new versions of all eReaders, but how long that will take, no one knows. Of course the new iPhone OS was suppose to be out 2 weeks ago, so no idea when this will be implemented.

Anonymousbird · 28/02/2011 10:01

AFEICA, I was wondering why my phone wouldn't update whilst I was out!! I have no signal at home, so on the way to school, my phone (vodafone) normally beeps and jumps into life....

I use:
Shareprice
BBC
EBAY
Weather
Ocado (love it!)
Camera
A compass
A torch (oh yes!)
Yell.com (so often)
Recipe apps - numerous
First Direct (yippee)

To name but a few..

I Loaded Angry Birds the first day I got it, but have absolutely no idea what to do so have never used it!

I have got an iphone 3 and I think OH regrets getting it for me for Christmas. I am often to be found supposedly doing the washing up but fiddling on my iphone.

I play unblock me, fall down, angry birds, look on FB, hotmail, and sometimes use it for texting.

I am so glad I now know about how to close apps, as it does gobble up the battery otherwise.

AFEICA · 28/02/2011 10:06

Tee, do we have a choice of whether to upgrade the OS? I like my Kindle and dont really want to swap it!

Downloaded Angry Birds, not sure how to use it but can see it could be quite addictive.

Oh well, will work out how to use it whilst Vodafone get their act together!

Dropdeadfred · 28/02/2011 10:07

could ANYONE tell me why i cant do the closing apps thing? I have a 3gs on tmobile if it is significant..?

AFEICA · 28/02/2011 10:08

Tee does that mean that all my downloaded kindle books will be unreadable?

I only bought a load of them yesterday Shock

AFEICA · 28/02/2011 10:12

Dropdeadfred, sorry no idea. I have to keep referring back to the instructions on this post to remember how to do mine!

Tee2072 · 28/02/2011 10:13

No they will still be readable, you just won't be able to buy any more until the Kindle app updates. What it will probably mean is an increase in prices as Apple will now take their cut.

You can refuse any OS upgrade, but eventually they will force you to take it.

Tee2072 · 28/02/2011 10:15

Sorry Fred just saw yours.

Are you using OS4? Because I don't think it works if you are still on OS3.

CherryPie3 · 28/02/2011 10:16

DDF- I can't either, I have the iphone 3 on pay as u go (o2) - is it just the i4 that can do it? Confused

RRGL - me too!! Grin

CountBapula · 28/02/2011 10:28

I got mine shortly after DS was born and it has kept me sane during night feeds. I LOVE it! Do loads of MNing on it, FB, youtube ...

I love the instagram app - turns your rubbish iphone snaps into groovy retro-style shots via a range of arty-farty filters (there are some pics on my profile).

Thanks for the tip about closing apps - nearly all of mine were running! Shock Blush

blondepinhead · 28/02/2011 10:41

If you have any Iphone before 4, you don't need to go through the app-closing rigmarole (unless you can, which is something to do with the new OS). Just closing out using the home button should be enough.

I think Apple are trying to make using an Iphone more like using a Mac. There is another super-faffy way to close your apps, but I really don't want to confuse anyone.

DollyTwat · 28/02/2011 10:53

what's the other way blonde I have to know everything about my gorgeous phone Grin

BellaBearisWideAwake · 28/02/2011 10:56

have googled and the forums (fora?) seem to suggest that it doesn't matter if apps are running, and it isn't like on a mac where they need to be shut down.

chicaguapa · 28/02/2011 11:00

Dropdead do you have the version 4 software? The facility to have more than one app open at a time came with that. Also sorting your apps into folders, for the more anally retentive. BlushItunes will tell if you need to upgrade.

chicaguapa · 28/02/2011 11:01

Re the Kindle, you would still be able to buy the books on a computer and just get them sent to your Kindle app. (I think!)
