i miss rye bread.

LittleLupin · 11/07/2007 09:50

Have lovely hols, those of you that are off. We're away to the Lakes in a week and a bit - I am collecting Harry Potter at midnight, we are leaving at 1am and I shall read out loud to DH for hours as we hare up the motorway!

MrsFish · 11/07/2007 10:22

Need to practice my bread, had a go yesterday... it tasted ok, just not much to look at

fishie · 11/07/2007 10:24

daemara this will get you started you don't have to fanny around with feeding it forever, just till is established (week or so?). i keep my pet in fridge and just feed it when i want to make bread. can freeze it if this is not very often but i haven't tried yet.

my starter/pet is just strong white bread flour, can change it to wholemeal or rye if you like, will get a different result. i tend to make bread half white half wholemeal, sometimes bung in some spelt or rye. all wholemeal is a bit too challenging after a couple of days.

lapin you are very kind to your dh, i would settle down in seat with duvet and read to myself. i bet you stop reading aloud after about three pages

Tigi · 11/07/2007 10:45

my son wanted to go to book shop at midnight for potter- we did last time, but going on hol this time, so will have to wait!
Slubs, got any ideas for a helthy eating run about game for Beavers, can't find anything online. Doing healthy eating badge tonight. doing healthy food bingo, making fruit faces... ta

LittleLupin · 11/07/2007 11:01

DH will probably beg me to stop . He doesn't mind me reading my book as long as I spend some time talking to him.

Tigi · 11/07/2007 12:32

have you changed your name again LL?

Slubberdegullion · 11/07/2007 17:09

Tigi...only just logged on...you're probably underway with Beavers already.

Rainbows fave running games are:

Bananas in a bunch. Girls run around shouting
'we are bananas in a bunch, how many shall we have for lunch'

then you shout 2 (or 3 or 7 whatever) and they have to make up groups of that number. Girls not in a group are out. They can then choose the next number. v. popular.

Also we do islands,
put newspaper (telegraph ot FT only broadsheets will do) on ht efloor, girls runs around (or skip...rainbows love skipping) between making sure they don't touch.

You shout the tides coming in and they all scramble onto an island. With each go you can either take paper away or fold in half. Girls can share an island but they are out of any part of them is touching the floor. To make it fooody.....hmmmmm bananas floating in custard?

hth

Been there, done it, knackered! Boy were they noisy - perhaps i sould do rainbows instead - ours folded!
Did 'fruit basket', named them in a circle - banana, strawberry, apple, plum. One in the middle shouted a name, and those of that name had to swap places, with middle one trying to get in a place too. mayhem! Utter mayhem! It didn't last long I can tell you! made fruit/veg faces on saucers , they all moaned 'i don't like carrot/kiwi/raisons etc'. little blighters!

Tigi · 29/07/2007 20:21

Can anyone please tell me when the next meeting is due?

Meridian · 30/07/2007 15:14

no idea but maybe if we keep this bumped they will bake? I think a couple of the MNWI are on holiday now but should be back soon... I'm here anyway.. sorta polished cupcake award

Tigi · 30/07/2007 18:13

I've just come back, but I think Mrs fish may be away this week.

I wondered this too, but too polite to say so....

Meridian · 01/08/2007 09:19

sorry sorry I'm Daemara... i forgot to say

purplemonkeydishwasher · 01/08/2007 09:20

i think we decided to reconvene (sp?) when school started up again.
my folks will be here all of september so i'm not sure how i'm going to manage this without looking wacko!!

Meridian · 01/08/2007 09:48

purplemonkey- I think thats why i keep putting recipes with pictures on my weblog.. so dh dosent think i'm completly mad.. as my dad reads my blog i just say the pictures are for my family and friends in idaho, california and texas. he probablly still thinks i'm mad though.

Tigi · 01/08/2007 12:27

Glad we cleared up the mystery visitor!
There is a fine line between fun and insanity isn't there! DH wondered why I was taking a photo of a tin of prunes on the swing the other week - I just shrugged in a 'dunno' sort of way! He thinks I'm tapped anyway!

Meridian · 01/08/2007 12:57

the worst bit is my dh is a photographer.. so there i am with my crappy little camera phone and on occasion i ask him to take a picture for me with a proper camera and i get given this you-are-insane-woman-why-do-you-need-a-picture-of-a-cupcake sort of look. but seeing as he gets to eat said cupcake there usually isn't much of an argument.

Slubberdegullion · 01/08/2007 13:06

Hello all. Tigi are you still about? I have something amazing to tell you (you were the other fan of the BBC Great British Village show weren'yt you?)

ooh ooh SPILL Slub!

Slubberdegullion · 01/08/2007 19:00

OK...this is only (moderately) exciting if you watched the show.

So anyway,

Few weeks ago (week before my RL Village Show) I get on the bus to go into town, have settled myself down and then onto the bus gets.........well it's only Lynne....the (big) WI cake judge (the really harsh one) from the TV show.

I was like "OMG" (did actually say it out loud. Then there was a moments hesitation as she came up the aisle but no, I thought sod it, how often does one meet a RL cake celeb on the bus.

So I said "Oh hello, excuse me, terribly sorry, but are you the WI Cake judge from off trhe telly"?

And she said (looking around a bit nervously ) "well yes I am"

and then I went all pink and giggly (I tell you I could not have been more excited if Johny Depp had just got on the bus) and all these words came tumbling out

"Oh I so loooove your show, you are so fantastic (I may have even said I Love you...Jees what a groupie)and I'm in my Village Show with a victoria Sponge this weekend....come and talk to me about Victoria Sponges.

Well she looked a bit taken aback but as I had put dd's on the floor to make room for her she didn't have much choice. So for the next 15mins we talked about Victoria Sponge. I was in heaven. She got very enthusiastic and we went through all the rules (which I already knew, but pretended I didn't).

I even told her about the MN village Show comp's and how baking was not just of yesteryears generation but was really 'now' and modern women were embracing traditional values again. (my voice was all high and shrill by this point). The bus went all quiet, lots of elderly ladies were nodding sagely. God I was in my element.

Lynne was really into it to, bemoaning the cull of home economics at school. We bonded. I bonded with Lynne.

So anyway then we got into town and she wished me luck. we didn't embrace ( but I wanted too).

Second half of story coming up, have to go and welcome husband just in from work.

Fab story slubbers

Well I should have been on holiday this week, drove all the way to Cornwall on saturday, took us 8 hours (bad traffic on M5) went to book in...

... we were a week early, I had written it on the calendar wrong so we came back on sunday, and have to do it all again this saturday

Slubberdegullion · 01/08/2007 19:12

OK, husband duly snogged and given wine

Right, so a week later (after I had been awarded second for my VS....which lots have people have now told me should have come first as Mr Smooth crust's was waaaay too dark), one of my friends was at Tatton (the flower show) and was in the WI tent with her mum, and she got chatting to a couple of the recruiters who were very very keen on signing her up.

So my friend says

"well I'm not sure I'm WI material yet, but I have a friend in my village who is a dead cert for you, in fact she just entered a VS into our village show"

pause

Mrs WI: what village was that?
Friend: name of village
WI: did she come 2nd?
Friend: yes omg yes how do you know?
WI: Oh Lynne was SO pleased to hear her result
Friend: eh....what...how...does Lynne know?
WI: Well Lynne was so delighted to have been recognised on the bus, and to have met such a lovely young cake enthusiast, we put our feelers out to find out how she did.
Friend:OK and (pmsl)

How great is that? Lynne set the WI feelers into action to see how I did.

[mega mega chuffed emoticon]

I am so gonna be in the RL WI now...they know me
