Third thread of healthy eating, no calorie counting just good, healthy food for us and our families.

I am now. One cider down and 1 to go! I bloody love takeaways and all the crisps I can fit in my mouth but really enjoying this way of eating too. It's grand and I can feel the difference in my energy levels.

I have suffered from mild depression for a few years and would LOVE to perk myself up for winter with great food and lots of exercise...and maybe a light box.

God it's boiling tonight!

Coumarin · 24/07/2014 20:30

Cutting out the sugar has really helped my anxiety Short quite a dramatic improvement in fact.

Although I want crisps and a takeaway now...

shortaris1 · 24/07/2014 20:35

Sorry!

daisydee43 · 24/07/2014 20:53

weve been eating lots fruit, yog and cereal bars instead of choc n rubbish. got chicken breton this week yum

AmericasTorturedBrow · 25/07/2014 03:47

Annoyingly less alcohol def means a lift in my spirits!

Had aubergine cutlets and a vegan burger for lunch, pescado salad for dinner and DC's leftover fish fingers

holmessweetholmes · 25/07/2014 08:57

Off to France on holiday for two weeks tomorrow. Can't wait, but am going to find it hard to resist the piles of croissants, pains au chocolat, baguettes, ice cream and wine... I'm taking my running kit with me at least though.

Bramshott · 25/07/2014 09:01

Yay - me too holmes (leaving Sunday). Resolving to buy lots of fruit for breakfast, and find as much pain de siegle as I can! Not even going to try resisting cheese and wine though Grin! Have a lovely time.

holmessweetholmes · 25/07/2014 09:01

Americas - same here with the booze (and the sugar, Coumarin). Hard to stick to though! I might have to try to make lovely French cheese my indulgence of choice on holiday - it may not be great for me in large quantities, but I think it will be better than a load of sugar and carbs.

Sleepwhenidie · 25/07/2014 09:56

Enjoy all of it holmes and Bram. Delicious food is a huge part of being on holiday. Try and stay mindful Wink. Americas it sounds like you were in amazing shape just before your holiday so comparing yourself to that is a bit harsh.

On the subject of places/food, isn't it amazing the associations we develop? For me France means baguette with butter and apricot jam for breakfast, I love it. I think it a childhood thing. But it would never cross my mind to even fancy having that here, surely it doesn't taste that different? Confused. Anyone else got things like that?

I am away for 5 weeks from tomorrow too, couple in St Ives then French Alps. It will be nice to be somewhere sunny but less sticky than London!

The cauliflower salad last night was a hit, delicious garlicky dressing. I tried sweet potato and chicken kebabs but even after marinating all day the chicken was too dry, am giving up on those for BBQ. Luckily seared beef carpaccio made up for it Grin.

How are you doing this morning Short, I'm sorry! I wasn't having a dig about the 'clean' eating term, just talking generally! As I said, it means different things to different people Smile

Coumarin · 25/07/2014 11:02

Italy is crusty bread, cheese and figs. Oh and squid.

Had the bread, cheese and figs here obviously but they've never tasted the same. In Italy the bread was from the village shop, freshly baked that morning by the old lady who served me, the figs were picked off the tree outside our villa and the cheese was from the farm down the road. Eaten in the shade whilst watching swallows swoop down to the pool. No wonder it doesn't taste the same here!

Coumarin · 25/07/2014 11:04

Never had squid anywhere else. It tasted ok albeit slightly rubbery but not had the urge to again. Wanted to try something I hadn't had before.

Imliketotallyummm · 25/07/2014 11:10

Sleep, apricot jam always makes me think of France too!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 25/07/2014 12:39

Me too! Especially when paired with baguette and butter

Yoghurt and honey for breakfast immediately take and back to a childhood holiday in Crete, even though it's a pretty staple food in most western countries now

Coumarin · 25/07/2014 14:18

I'm struggling to eat much in this heat. Seen to have lost my appetite. Anyone else?

donteattheplaydough · 26/07/2014 10:20

Found you all! Haven't posted much recently as have been so busy. I haven't had much chance to focus on food, it's just about all I could manage to keep everyone fed, so haven't been as healthy/creative with food as usual. Ideally I would be making nice home-cooked meals and baking every day, but with the three children, and DH working a lot, I just can't manage it. My exercise routine has also gone out of the window lately. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day.

However I have managed to stick to the basic plan - cutting back on refined carbs / sugar / junk food, getting the whole family to eat more vegetables and fruit etc - so haven't fallen off the wagon completely.

I am also aware that this isn't the easiest time in my life to make big changes - DD2 is only 2yrs old and still with me full-time - once she starts nursery later in the year I will have the mornings which will make things easier. So I have to not be too hard on myself, and take small steps.

On the plus side I have lost weight without even really trying! Someone asked me if I was on the 5:2 diet and I could smugly say no, I was just eating healthier! I have been able to get into clothes that were a bit tight before. I haven't lost loads of weight (I didn't want to lose too much at once anyway), I am still a size 14, but I feel less bloated, and my clothes are more comfortable particularly round my middle. I feel a bit more self-confident.

We are off to Spain tomorrow - fresh fish and fresh veg, sea air, swimming, can't wait!. I think the break will do us all the world of good. Smile

shortaris1 · 26/07/2014 20:12

Sleep, bramshott and holemes enjoy your holidays! I'm off to Spainin 2 weeks.

Sleep no worries. You'd laugh if you could see me sat here with my wine and crisps but generally really enjoying eating really lovely food that tastes good and is good for me.

Feeling much better about work stuff. Think I'll be much happier in new place anyway.

EVERYWHERE has foody associations for me. I worked on ships for a few years and the best bit was getting off and eating. Lovely pizza in the Italian ports, fish in Croatia, bread and kebabs (nice ones) in Turkey and amazing greek salad and saganaki in Greece. Loved all of it.

Coumarin · 26/07/2014 20:23

Much cooler here today so my appetite is coming back. Accidentally made mango, coconut and banana 'ice cream' earlier. Didn't put enough coconut water in the blender with the frozen mango and frozen banana and the result was gorgeous.

Imliketotallyummm · 26/07/2014 21:52

Coumarin, that sounds lovely. I'll try that when I have a new mixer.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 27/07/2014 03:11

Our go-to "ice cream" has become frozen bananas and a bit of almond milk in the blender too, genius an the DC love it

Sleepwhenidie · 27/07/2014 23:10

I'm going to try that too! Am on hols now but brought the nutribullet. (despite DH's Hmm) as he packed the car to overflowing Grin. Healthy delicious ice cream will help justify it even more Smile

[Fuzz] and [Dame] you are quiet lately, are you ok?

Sleepwhenidie · 27/07/2014 23:13

Oops, mixing up my [ ] with my * and not even had any wine tonight Hmm...time for bed!

Coumarin · 27/07/2014 23:27

I love that you've taken your nutribullet with you Sleep Grin

Have a great holiday.

Sleepwhenidie · 27/07/2014 23:35

Blush now I sound like a smoothie obsessive...I'm not really...in my defence we are away for 5 weeks!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 28/07/2014 03:29

Smoothies are ace, I don't blame you!

Today was pretty good. Went to a friends for brunch, I declined the pastries in favour of home made quiche, fruit and yoghurt - and a big green smoothie!

It was pretty big and late so I had an early afternoon snack of cashew nuts and DH and I have just shared sushi for dinner. Cup of ginger tea and I'm satisfied

stilllearnin · 28/07/2014 15:37

Hello everyone. And Americas welcome back, was thinking about you. No my ds is not famous but he does play at festivals, writes for others and is now doing some radio. He loves this life and as he is still young, we get in free to chaperone. If you know us i am outed
, but im fairly inoffensive (cannot speak for ds on that count) so im not too bothered. SGP was great- lots of fun and full on. I'm not sure how the eating went. Not awful, notable sugar absence, less alcohol but as you get so little
sleep (camping next to an all night club area!) I ate more than I should. But not relying on sugar to pick me up is massive for me and I am a lot lot more resiliant than i have been for a few years.

Just to f
should.
