hows everyone getting on this week?

Deluge · 08/08/2014 13:19

Hi all. Can I join?

Have been feeling really lethargic lately and have decided that my addiction to coffee and taste for sugar and refined carbs must be curbed!

Not tryng to lose weight, just want to feel more energetic and get back into the habit of eating tasty, fresh, healthy food. I quite like cooking, but have become lazy, so looking forward to gettng back into trying new recipes.

Made a really nice porridge this morning with cinnamon, raisins, toasted almonds and banana, and made Huevos Rancheros for lunch (was delish). Been necking water, plus one decaf coffee (anathema to me but was surprisingly good!) and a green tea (I like jasmine green tea). Have got more energy than I have had for weeks. Amazing!

Making soy/honey salmon and chilli prawns with an avocado/spinach salad for dinner and just bought loads of fruit for pudding.

Hoping I'll get the DC to eat a bit more veg out of this, too!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/08/2014 15:14

Welcome Deluge sounds like you're off to a flying start

Not a great week for me but I think TOTM is approaching so will cut myself some slack!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/08/2014 19:11

Bloody hell, I'm finding it hard to get into the swing of things againSad

I'm picking and eating huge portions

I think if I start exercising again that will kick start things again but I have a knee problem atm...

I need to start as I feel sluggish.

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2014 18:41

Ah don't beat yourself up Dame, it's normal to go through phases, that's just life! No one is truly consistent - would be pretty dull if we were anyway Grin. Hope your knee gets better soon though Sad.

Sleepwhenidie · 10/08/2014 18:42

Oh and welcome Deluge (appropriate today Wink). You sound like you'll be right at home here Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/08/2014 19:03

Today was a bit better-
Eggs and fruit bread
Salmon and crackers, apple and banana
Lemon chicken and noodles

Too many carbs but no chocolate or biscuits which is an improvementGrin

Hi all, eaten a load of rubbish this week as been at the Fringe a few days and travelling with work. Off on holiday tomorrow so going to eat lovely things while I'm away. Love my tapas on hols and will try to have lots of lovely fish and steak rather than loads of chips!!!

hello to newbies, I love this thread!

Deluge · 10/08/2014 20:45

Hello again Grin.

I didn't post yesterday out of shame. Went to the cinema with kids and had a LOT of popcorn, chocolate and coke .

Back on track today, though.

Usually Sundays in our house means a roast with huge amounts of carbs followed by a proper pudding, but we were healthy today and dinner was delish - roast chicken with roast sweet potatoes, courgettes, peppers, carrots & shallots and steamed green veg, then greek yoghurt with apple, walnuts & honey. Feel full in a good way, not the usual carbs coma Grin

Struggling a bit with how expensive it is to eat well, though. Fruit is so expensive and we have got through shedloads this weekend.

holmessweetholmes · 11/08/2014 08:37

Hello all! I'm back from 2 weeks in France. Two weeks of cheese, wine and pains au chocolat. Actually, I was a bit more restrained on the wine than I would normally be on holiday, plus I did go for a few runs. On the downside, still living on antihistamines and covered in blotches. Off to the doc tomorrow...

Getting right back into the swing of eating betterer - run yesterday, lovely bircher muesli this morning. Deluge - you're right about the expense. Good meat, fish and fruit are pricey!

Neeko · 13/08/2014 16:38

Welcome back Holmes. Smile Hope you had a lovely time despite the hives.

I go back to work on Friday after the long school break. No more play dates and outings or unplanned meals. Normal, healthy eating will resume then I hope

AmericasTorturedBrow · 13/08/2014 22:05

Good meat and fish being pricey is one of the primary reasons I have a mainly vegan diet!

I got braces on yesterday Blush and Sad at the grand old age of 31. Argh. Pretty much on a liquid diet at the mo so just trying to stick to homemade smoothies and soups and avoid comfort eating ice cream!

Sleepwhenidie · 15/08/2014 07:53

Hi everyone, we (as in me and the nutribullet Wink...oh, and of course family) are now in France too - popular choice Grin. Very glad I brought the bullet so far, holidays are usually the worst for me wrt veggie consumption but I've made a smoothie with kale, spinach, fruit and super green powder most days and feel much better for it. Of course there's also too much wine, bread and takeaway but that's ok, part of the holiday phase!

Fuzz are you still around? and Holmes what did GP say?

Americas my friend had braces at 40, her teeth look great now they are off Grin

holmessweetholmes · 15/08/2014 13:42

Hurrah! I am finally rid of the hives (about to cancel my gp appointment). They've been reducing over the past couple of days, and today is my first piriton-free day. Still don't know what caused them but it may have been heat-related I suppose.

In other good news, looks like we may manage our big move by the end of September! This is all putting me in a positive frame of mind about life in general, so I'm being pretty good on the food and exercise front too. Overnight oats, salads and lovely meat from the farmer's market (ouch, my wallet!).

Sleepwhenidie · 15/08/2014 14:03

It is expensive, no doubt about it. I think if we had to watch the food spend more than we do, a more vegetarian based diet would be the way DH and I would do it. I am very aware that we are spoilt lucky but once you get used to eating good quality meat and fish etc I think it makes you too aware of how cheaper stuff doesn't really compare. It would be amazing if there could be a way of putting some kind of horrible surcharge on sugar based products that could directly subsidise good quality meat/fish/veg/fruit to make it more available...

Sleepwhenidie · 15/08/2014 14:14

That's great news about the house and the hives Holmes...could they possibly be connected Confused...stress related maybe?

holmessweetholmes · 15/08/2014 14:42

That did occur to me, Sleep, but I think probably not. It doesn't quite fit time-wise and I had it once before at a non-stressful time. But who knows - it could have been a contributing factor.

holmessweetholmes · 16/08/2014 07:38

Aha. I seem to have worked out the cause of the hives. Alcohol. No wonder it was so much worse on holiday! Ah well - I'm sure I'd be better off giving it up anyway. ..

Sleepwhenidie · 16/08/2014 08:34

Oh Holmes Shock...was it Bramshott who said her brother was like that? Your instincts were to cut out the booze when you first joined the thread weren't they? So interesting, this is how our bodies force us to pay attention to what isn't working sometimes!

holmessweetholmes · 16/08/2014 11:02

Yes indeed. I have had various mild reactions to alcohol over the years - for a while it used to make me sneeze. Then it had a phase of making me ridiculously flushed. I guess it's time I heeded the warning signs!

Anyway, enough about me and my blotches! How is the Eating Betterer going everyone? What delicious healthy stuff have you all been eating? I'm very into the overnight oats for breakfast atm (when I remember). The best thing is that they seem to taste a bit more naturally sweet than porridge does, but feel a bit less heavy. I have them with grated apple, cinnamon and sometimes some fresh or frozen berries, but no added sugar/honey etc.

Sleepwhenidie · 16/08/2014 15:38

I did overnight oats with coconut yoghurt, almond milk and chia seeds (Deliciouslyella's) a few times before the holidays and it is so good...also with berries/nuts. Will definitely be doing it again once I'm home (too much of a challenge finding those ingredients in France!). I have to say the quality of the fruit and veg here is a bit disappointing Sad. I need to find local markets rather than the big supermarket maybe....

holmessweetholmes · 16/08/2014 16:14

I have never tried chia seeds. Where do you buy them? I quite fancy trying them.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/08/2014 19:53

Hello, I'm still here, justHmm Smile

Not doing great and feel dreadfully down on myself atm but have started walking again which is helping. Eating today was good. My mum said I've lost weight again, so go figure! I don't want to undo all my hard work but finding it very hard. I've been on anti biotics for a dreadful bite so I think that's upset things a bit,I never feel great taking them.

Hope everyone else is ok?x

Neeko · 16/08/2014 20:13

Hello all. Smile
Excuse my ignorance but what are overnight oats?

Sleepwhenidie · 16/08/2014 21:23

Hi Neeko overnight oats are just oats soaked in (usually) yoghurt (Holmes what do you use?) so that they don't need cooking-Bircher muesli is made this way. The chia seeds swell up and become almost gelatinous if you use those too. I get mine from Wholefoods, any health shop will have them. A little goes a very long way, I use a tsp in smoothies and a tbsp in overnight oats. (2 portions).

Dame sorry to hear you are feeling down Sad. Go easy on yourself, antibiotics can really knock you about. Are you taking probiotics to help get your immune system back on an even keel? Don't stress about undoing your progress so far, I'm sure you'll probably just maintain the status quo for a while, which is perfectly fine. Be gentle, mother yourself for a bit, eat what you feel you need. Enjoy the walking for its own sake. I'm sure you will be back to your usual self soon, it's normal to have ups and downs. More un-MN
