How much food colour do you use to get that fabulous colour in the cake? Paste, presumably?

Oh god I need to get off here, that zombie one is brilliant! I'm currently making a birthday cake for a friend that will involve making edible blood for dripping down the sides of a pure white cake, cant wait to see it!!!

The rainbow one was 2 or 3 batches of victoria sponge type cake (equal weight of eggs, sr flour, butter & sugar + Vanilla). Divided into 6 bowls and coloured using sugarflair paste colours. Don't use liquid colours as you need so much that it affects the taste and texture.

I think this was probably my best ever cake: 12yo boys were so disgusted that they would not eat the skanky toes!

But how much colour? Whenever I have tried to colour cake mix, the baked result has always been pale and insipid, no matter how brightly coloured. Should i put in so much colour that the cake mix look outrageously gaudy before it is baked?

I'm not a cake decorator - my expertise lies more in the cake itself - but I was really proud of this succession of owl cakes I made for my son when he was 8, 9 and 10. The second cake looked better than it tasted and was meant to be an edible version of his favourite toy owl. I went back to design 1 for the third cake, only gave him demonic eyes.

HerGraciousMaj The batter was very vivid before being cooked. Sorry, I can't remember how much but I kept adding more till it looked very bright.

atmytimeoflife - omg thats perfect! I need that for Halloween. How on earth did you do it? PM me if you dont want to put it all on here. How did you do all the bumpy bits on top where the blood is and how did you get the colour so decaying looking on the flesh??

These are all...wow. I love making cakes but my decorating skills are nonexistent, I managed a weird demonic looking monkey once, but that's it. And I'm real,g hungry right now.
