Dd is 15. i’m 48. We like watching films together — both her choices and mine. Of my list, that I enjoyed as a teen, we have watched:
Dirty Dancing
10 things I hate about you
Robin Hood Prince of thieves
Batman returns (with Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer)
Clueless
Legally Blonde
The Breakfast Club
Beetlejuice
Heathers
Back to the future

I’m sure there are more… but what would you add to this list?

Oh crikey forgot Trainspotting and Rita Sue and Bob Too x

Lambsydaisy · 19/10/2026 00:45

Risky business, maybe a bit near the knuckle though and I haven't watched it recently so don't know how it's aged.
First wives club
The sixth sense
Cape fear
Field of dreams
Forest gump
Sleepless in Seattle
When Harry met Sally
You've got mail
Moonstruck
My best friends wedding
One fine day
Muriel's wedding
Speed
Miss congeniality
My cousin Vinny
Ghost
A fish called Wanda
Alien

I'll stop there

I’ve tried a few with my teens and…. they didn’t age very well! The misogyny, normalised sexual assaults, blunt racism… 😱 we had to stop watching. Can’t remember all we tried, but Back to the future was one of them.

Maybe you should start watching Woke Films. The Eighties and Nineties films just showed life the way it was lived then

sweetiepie11 · 19/10/2026 05:56

Probably would include Never Been Kissed.

I feel one I wouldn’t include is Cry Baby as I wouldn’t want my DD to get ideas haha lol. I think it’s a bit sexy and I wouldn’t purposely recommend it as a family movie.

EvelynBeatrice · 19/10/2026 06:58

Yes, as above My Cousin Vinnie was and remains a great favourite and they also loved The Blues Brothers.

Pretty in Pink

Whatever you do, not watch Weird Science!!

I remembered it being so popular and couldn't wait to show DD.

It was absolutely awful as a rewatch 😂

I certainly did not remember it being so rude and sexist!!

My daughter asked why I was making her watch it 😂

St Elmo's fire

I was going to suggest weird science lol maybe I should watch again, just remember it being a great film at the time lol

Rottweilermummy · 19/10/2026 08:01

Footloose
Fame
Breakfast club
1st 2 Indiana Jones films ( if not seen )
Will add more when I think,
Great post OP theres some i've not seen still or forgotten about. I was going to suggest weird science but someone has pointed out not as good 2nd time round, which I have found now with some films i loved, how did I even enjoy that film 🤔

MannyTeddy · 19/10/2026 08:40

I love Veronica Mars 🥰

MannyTeddy · 19/10/2026 08:52

Buffy
Charmed
High fidelity

Instanttiffeecoffee · 19/10/2026 08:58

A lot of them haven’t aged well at all. I took my kids to see a retro cinema day screening of the goonies. It was like a weird upskirting fetish film.

Justwantedtosayrightnow · 19/10/2026 09:21

Meredusoleil · 17/10/2026 19:50

What was that film called with 2 sets of twins that got swapped at birth and grew up with completely different lives? Not the Lindsay Lohan one. I think Bette Middler was one of the actresses 🤔

Maybe The parent trap ?

fizzywidget · 19/10/2026 09:25

The Bodyguard
Top Gun
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe

DoubtfulCat · 19/10/2026 09:27

@MannyTeddy she is watching Buffy by herself at the moment

I saw the goonies again in the last ten years and don’t remember upskirting. Most of the film is boys in caves. Am I blanking out something awful?

Never seen some of the films mentioned, so can’t comment on all of them. I do agree to an extent with the breakfast club but on the other hand Ally’s speech starting “it’s a trap” is so good. It struck me as being quite realistic in terms of the double standards around.

i wonder if she’d enjoy He’s Just Not That Into You. I know it’s later than 90s.

Trainspotting maybe over the next year or so. I want her to see a few foreign-language films like La Haine and Volver as well.

I am loving all the suggestions- thank you!

Has anyone watched Bad Boys, Twins or Three Men and a Baby in the last few years? Haven’t seen them for decades so not sure what they are like now but loved them back in the day.

Edited

Oh I LOVED Three Men and a Baby!

DD is 13 now and we mostly watch TV shows (currently finishing up Heartstopper after finishing Never Have I Ever and Sterling Point, we watch Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill on and off) but we like to watch some films too.

Recently due to the season she’s wanted to watch “scary” movies, which aren’t my cup of tea. But I like some of the ones I watched as a teenager in the 90s, so we’ve watched a few of the Scream movies and just watched the Faculty recently. I’m thinking about doing Disturbing Behavior or I Know What You Did Last Summer with her next. (We also liked Ready or Not 1&2 but those are newer)

When DS1 (19) was younger we watched a lot of movies together but I’m struggling to remember which ones! Lots of John Hughes, he loved the Breakfast Club. Scream, Adventures in Babysitting, Top Gun, Big, the Shawshank Redemption, Dead Poet’s Society, Honey I Shrunk the Kids…

I think I might to a Cher double header with DD soon and watch Mermaids and Moonstruck back to back.

Redheadedstepchild · 19/10/2026 10:48

@DoubtfulCat If you're thinking about foreign films maybe Cedric Klapsich's, "Erasmus" series might be an idea?

"L'Auberge Espagnole - being the first one. When they are all students in Spain? Remember it?

Then, "Les Poupées Russes."

I have to admit that I dropped out after that and haven't watched, "Casse Tête Chinois" (when they are in New York) or the, "Salade Grecque" spin off series which centres on their children because I sort of wanted to leave them as they were on the St Petersburg riverboat, at William and Natacha's wedding.

It was becoming increasingly obvious to me that Xavier, the Romain Duris character was an insufferable, selfish, manipulative, nasty piece of work and when I read the reviews of Chinese Puzzle, the third film, I thought, "I'm out."

Greek Salad is, I have heard, "À vomir."

The first two are good though.

Mannequin.
Weekend at Bernie’s.

Yes to Weekend at Bernie's, was going to post this as I remember laughing till I cried, haven't watched since I was a teen so not sure if it would stand up to today's morals etc though
Tried to watch Mrs Doubtfire with the kids a few years back and they were quite horrified by the attitudes. Loved The Police Academy lot back in the day but those definitely would not have aged well! My brother and I used to know most of the word off by heart back in the day
Watched Gremlins with DD several years back and was quite 😳at the level of violence even though it was funny....

noworklifebalance · 19/10/2026 11:04

I have never heard of pretty in pink - not sure how that passed me by as clearly many PPs have recommended it!

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 19/10/2026 14:04

Child’s Play

paddlinglikecrazy · 19/10/2026 14:45

My teen DS both love stand by me and rain man.

AhBiscuits · 19/10/2026 16:14

I've just remembered Flatliners. I loved that.

Redheadedstepchild · 19/10/2026 18:08

I wonder if, "The Blaire Witch Project" is even watchable these days? I barely got through it then.

DoubtfulCat · 19/10/2026 22:01

Just watched Lost Boys. I didn’t clock at the time quite how gorgeous Jason Patric was in it (my heart was given to Keanu Reeves and Christian Slater at the time) 😂

She did enjoy it so Flatliners could be our next watch.
