Dd is 15. i’m 48. We like watching films together — both her choices and mine. Of my list, that I enjoyed as a teen, we have watched:
Dirty Dancing
10 things I hate about you
Robin Hood Prince of thieves
Batman returns (with Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer)
Clueless
Legally Blonde
The Breakfast Club
Beetlejuice
Heathers
Back to the future

I’m sure there are more… but what would you add to this list?

I can’t imagine a teenager wanting to watch anything with their parents but I’ll play along

Top Gun
About Last Night
The Sure Thing
Say Anything
Working Girl
Witness
The Fugitive
Basic Instinct

I could go on for ages

What is wrong with you??? Why wouldn't they? Didn't you watch films with your parents?

We watched films with our teens all the time - and went to the cinema with them. Still do, now they're in their early 20s.

They all loved The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day, Ferris Bueller, the John Candy films, Home Alone, The Sure Thing, Grosse Point Blank, Ghostbusters, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, the Spielberg blockbusters, The Sting and some old classics like Singin' In The Rain and Some Like It Hot.

A lot of the other rom coms, and Brat Pack movies have sexual politics that are definitely Not OK. Sixteen Candles offering up a drunk comatose girl to others, Weird Science making basically a sexbot, Bender ending up with Claire even though he sexually harasses her by sticking his face up her skirt etc - that kind of thing. The teens were very unhappy about that sort of thing, and rightly so.

You can’t imagine a teenager watching a movie with their parents? Really? It’s a perfectly normal thing to do.

My 18YO DD always watches stuff with us (when she's not out or working so about once a week 😂) She also comes to the cinema with us.

Heathers is one of her favourite films. She also enjoyed The Craft. She wasn't impressed with Trainspotting - thought it was boring.

We tend to watch mainly TV series though - currently rewatching Supernatural.

Brokeandold · 18/10/2026 20:57

I remember going to the cinema to watch Jagged edge when it came out, i’m 57 so it was in the 80’s.
I said about watching it with our DS's when they were teenagers, don't think they were impressed-too grim?
loved Romancing the stone, Jewel of the Nile, The Big Easy
Desperately trying to remember more films but having a brain fog moment….

EvelynBeatrice · 18/10/2026 20:57

National Lampoon especially Christmas Vacation. However not Animal House until an older teen.

As a teen I loved - as did my kids after me - Flight of the. Navigator, War Games and Space Camp.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 18/10/2026 21:00

I tend to let them share films they like with me rather than the other way round. They stumble across the older stuff anyway and are more likely to like it without my influence. Also a lot of films don't age that well.

Onegiantpupil · 18/10/2026 21:16

Trying to think of ones that haven’t been said yet.

The Fugitive
Dead Poets Society
Shawshank Redemption
Top Gun
Gladiator
Titanic
The Truman Show
Crocodile Dundee
Romancing the Stone

We also recently watched The Shining with him which he enjoyed - not to everyone’s taste though!

I watched Ghostbusters with him a couple of years ago and it REALLY hadn’t aged well.

WholeLottaRoland · 19/10/2026 00:15

Our two favouries are Adventures in Babysitting and The Dream Team. From when they were small, and we still watch them now (at 18 and 20)!
