I've already said Rushmore once but as it was never a very popular film, I think I should explain it a bit more.
It was Wes Anderson's second film after Bottle Rocket and before the Royal Tenenbaums. It's a bittersweet high school movie with a very young Jason Schwartzman as an about 15 year old in a Dead Poets Society type school who has a horrible crush on the kindergarten teacher. Played by Olivia Williams with her real English accent.
Unfortunately he has a love rival in the shape of Bill Murray as the father of the school two stupid but rich, bully brothers.
Max Fischer, played by Schwartzman, prefers to write plays and run bizarre extra curricular clubs from beekeeping to the noble art of fencing.
Olivia Williams as the kindergarten teacher has problems of her own in the shape of being widowed at a young age. Her, "Hero who died young" husband was the celebrated Oceanic Explorer, Edward Appleby. Who drowned.
Neither the Bill Murray character or Max (Schwartzman) could hold a candle to such a person. Obviously.
It might sound creepy but the whole, "Teenage crush on a teacher" subject is handled well. As is the, "Desperate divorcing dad" character.
There's loads of subplots, an absolutely beautiful Luke Wilson turns up at some point and it is a comedy. A very funny one at that but it can be emotional.
Absolutely cracking soundtrack as well.
Feel like watching it again now.
