I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

I adored the film (and book) and now have a massive crush on Ryan Gosling, which I didn’t before. I think it was the glasses and cardigan! 😁

The vintage knitting pattern for the cardigan has been released. i like knitting iconic cardigans so might attempt this, not sure who would wear it!

The Martian is one of my favorite films and PHM lived up to my expectations! Went with DH and DS 30 and his GF and none of them got the Adrian connection!

I had to explain the Adrian thing to my 10 year old. Don’t think most people under about 30 will have got the reference!

Really glad I read the book first, really liked the film but I think it glossed over some things and added things which were unnecessary (totally out of character for Stratt to do karaoke!). I’ve never really thought about Ryan Gosling before but wow, he was brilliant. Had me sobbing during a certain emotional book which was less of a deal in the book, I think.

Looking forward to Artemis, which was a good read, but I hope Andy Weir NEVER has a female protagonist again, because he’s one of those male writers who simply cannot do it.

Oh I laughed out loud at that. Was just me dh and adult ds2 in the cinema so I could explain it to them. Dh hadn't got it 🙈

I hadn't much clue what it was going to be about. Ds2 is home on leave atm and said he fancied it. So we went as saved with the meerkat deal. I wouldn't have bothered otherwise. So glad we did as I loved it. I would go again.

Brilliant film.

Finally out for free streaming on Amazon Prime. Looking forward to watching this again as just finished the audiobook.

I just watched it again last night on Amazon. Ryan Gosling is slightly less annoying on the small screen. The book is still better though.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who found Ryan irritating!

Not as good as the book, but then, the book is my all time favourite. And something I recommend at ever opportunity.

Saw it at the cinema and enjoyed it - watched it again last night on Prime and absolutely loved it. I'm sure I'll watch it again soon.

Haven’t read the book and went into this not knowing very much, but absolutely loved it. It was much funnier than I was expecting and Ryan Gosling does a sterling job, given he carries at least two hours of the running time - albeit sharing the screen with a rock.

Loved the Close Encounters and Rocky/ADRIAN! bits.

Also thought they made Rocky very loveable by making him quite doglike.

EasternStandard · 11/07/2026 21:26

We really liked it. Might try the book too.

I went with DS1 not expecting to like it but loved it.

Much superior film to Disclosure Day which I saw today.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 18/07/2026 22:56

I saw the film then read the book. I loved both. I also got the Lego set!
