I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

I thought it wasn’t out till next week?

I’m just in from seeing it! I also cried - I haven’t read the book so didn’t go into it with any expectations but really did enjoy it. Enjoyed a bit of light comedy too.

According to Google - Project Hail Mary is officially scheduled for release in UK cinemas and IMAX on March 19, 2026. However, several major UK cinema chains, including Cineworld, Vue, and Showcase, are listing special early screenings beginning on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

Nincompoo · 14/03/2026 22:52

Just got back in from watching it too! Absolutely loved it 🥰

I want a friend like rocky!

RainbowBagels · 14/03/2026 22:53

I'm so glad this seems good. It's one of my absolute favourite books. If it's a weepie I wonder if I should go on my own? Was going to take the kids.

Pokerprincess · 14/03/2026 22:54

Just home from watching it too. Loved the book and the film! I cried too and thought the humour was good. 👍

You have to read it now!
(or listen to it on audiobook)

I thought it wasn’t out till next week?

A few cinemas always put on special preview showings the Friday and Saturday before the official release the following week.

I couldn’t go either day due to unmovable
plans so cannot wait until Thursday. The audiobook is one of the best listens, and I just can’t wait! Took a chance clicking on this thread and will remove myself now to avoid any movie spoilers that might be different from the book 😂

fourpercent · 14/03/2026 23:07

Just back from cinema and also loved it, very faithful to the book which is one of my favourites, and I thought Ryan Gosling was just right to play Grace.

Cosleepingadvice · 14/03/2026 23:20

I haven't been to the cinema to watch a film since before covid but i am so excited to go and see this and would really like to see it on a big screen. The Martian is one of my favourite films and i loved this book. I will have to wait until easter though, which is the next time we have a babysitter available (DPs are coming to stay so we will be able to grab a couple of hours to ourselves).

donatellasfoot · 15/03/2026 09:28

I really want to see this. From reading this thread (and just seeing the trailer!) I know I am going to cry like a baby. This means I’d rather go on my own than take my DC. Is that odd??

Chemenger · 15/03/2026 09:34

I love this book, I’m so glad that it sounds as though the film is true to it. I used to recommend both the book and the film of the Martian to prospective engineering students as examples of how engineers think. Project Hail Mary does the same but more for scientists. It’s great to have scientists and engineers as heroes rather than background characters.

It’s not a weepie in the traditional sense.

It’s a 12A and I think younger than 9 (ish) may struggle with the length. I’m not an expert though, 11 year old granddaughter, been a while since my DC were young.
There’s no violence, no bad language, no sex, no drugs. A bit of vodka drinking. Pretty sure 10 years plus will love it too.

I think my DCs will really enjoy this, but I hate watching films that really make me cry when I’m with them. I cry at anything and they think it’s hilarious!

I think I’m going to treat myself to an IMAX solo trip, then I can take them to see it where I can be more composed the second time 😂

LongTermLurker · 15/03/2026 11:34

I went to see it, knowing nothing about other than it was Ryan gosling and sci fi.

Loved it! It was sweeter and funnier than I'd expected. It was quite long though!

BippidyBoppety · 15/03/2026 11:38

Saw it last night, my friend raved about the book, I loved The Martian (book and film) so expectations were high. OMG what a fabulous ride! Laughed, cried (not buckets, damp eyes). Superb. Didn't even register it was a long film, entertained start to finish. The MUSIC is superb, atmospheric. An almost full screening, no phones lighting up (thankfully), everyone still and silent.

Going to do the Audible now.

And Ryan Gosling is super.

RasaSayangEh · 15/03/2026 12:47

Saw it last night (had no expectations as hadn't read the book or seen a trailer) and really enjoyed it, came out smiling.

I would say, whilst avoiding spoilers, that DH and I are both lab-based molecular biologists and we were perfectly happy suspending our disbelief over all the shonky pseudoscience in the film... apart from one tiny little seconds-long scene in which we both uttered small cries of horror!

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 15/03/2026 12:50

It was utterly charming, without being saccharine

TheFarriersDaughter · 15/03/2026 12:52

Have skimmed through in case of spoilers. Going to see it this afternoon. The trailer and reviews I’ve seen have been encouraging!

ChaChaChaChanges · 15/03/2026 12:55

We - DS15, DS14 and I - absolutely loved it. It’s very faithful to the book. And I’m so glad for a movie where the winners aren’t the ones with the biggest guns - they’re the ones with the biggest brains and hearts.

BootMaker · 15/03/2026 12:59

I loved the book, glad to hear the film lives up to it, might take myself off to the cinema next week.

GriseldaandMike · 15/03/2026 13:00

Off to see it with the book group ladies once we can work out a date everyone can make (it was our favourite read last year despite many not being Sci-fi fans). If I don't hate it 🤞(I often hate book adaptations if I've read the book) I'll take the DSs over Easter.

mum2jakie · 15/03/2026 13:09

Thanks for starting the thread. I hadn't realised the film was already showing this weekend so now have a special mother's day viewing this afternoon! Will take tissues because it doesn't take much for me to cry at a film.

TheFarriersDaughter · 15/03/2026 13:15

It’s on at the Curzon in my city.
