I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

My 10 year old wouldn’t have liked it though there are no particularly “scary” scenes. Nothing inappropriate per se.
My 12yo loved it, but he’s scientifically very curious and had already read the book.

I think they’d both be good with the science-y stuff.

sustained peril / tension tends to be what gets to my 11yo.

if it’s sustained “will they save the world?!” all they way through he might struggle, but if that’s the back drop but not with a sustained level of on-going tension throughout I think he would enjoy it.

Also depends a bit how real it seems - if it feels like a future that he might actually have to worry about!

I devoured the book and can’t wait to see this. I was the same with The Martian. Once I’ve seen this I will read Artemis because that is going to be a film too.

This thread is fascinating. I’ve seen the trailer several times (didn’t know it was a book) and written it off immediately as some kind of kids movie about saving the planet with a ‘cute’ rock character. Seems like it’s not?

Def not a kids movie

the book is pretty meaty “hard” sci fi. The film is more family friendly but I am not sure many kids under 12 would really like it. It’s a 12A but really very long.

Ooo thanks. Have just downloaded too!

Bohemond23 · 24/03/2026 17:24

A perfect movie - and there are not many of those about. DS (11) loved it too, and he usually hates long films. I was also delighted to see Sandra Hüller in such a mainstream movie. Anatomy of a fall is a superb film for anyone that hasn't seen it.

Musicmummy63 · 24/03/2026 17:32

Saw it yesterday, it was brilliant!!

I cannot stop streaming Sign of the Times.

Tbh, Artemis was pretty crap and I’m surprised to hear they might be making a film. Certainly it’s not in the same league as The Martian and Project Hail Mary.

I don’t think it will be an Oscar contender because Oscar films are always released around 6 months prior to the awards.

I thought it was really good and I think Gosling really deserves a nomination for this and the Puppeteers were very good, I think they used some CGI but using a proper puppet for most of the scenes added so much magic to the film. I would love to see them nominated in some way for that also!

Neulip · 24/03/2026 18:52

I haven't read the book of this, not my usual fare but I did think of getting the audiobook as my next audible listen, is it any good?

TheFarriersDaughter · 24/03/2026 19:31

Rocky for the acting Oscar.

Such a visually beautiful film. And a great soundtrack.

And Eric! So lovely to see him again. And The Bear’s wonderful cake maker.

Anatomy of How to Save the World.

And I hadn’t realised Ryan Gosling is good looking until now.

I re-downloaded Audible yesterday - so am off to listen to the book now.

I came to it via audio book and I absolutely loved it. Ray Porter is a very likeable narrator.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2026 21:00

I read the book first. Well, I got half way through the book then refused to spoil the ending of the film so then watched the film before then reading the end of the book. Just in case.

I loved them both. Will happily go back and watch the film again while it's still out in the cinemas.

I am 6 hours into the audiobook and it is wonderful. Ray Porter is a fantastic narrator. As Rocky would say ‘Amaze amaze amaze!.

I’ve also booked another ticket to go back and watch again on Friday. I think I’m even more excited 2nd time around 😆😍🌍🚀✨☀️🪨

There is Lego!!!! Amaze amaze amaze!

This was a 2 for 1 Wed outing due to bad weather. I didn't know the book and thought it was going to be a serious film. I had read good reviews. How wrong was I? This film was a delight in so many ways. I had only ever watched RG in one film before and would say I even had an aversion to him as a "lightweight actor". How wrong was I? He carried this film. His acting made it. What a treat!

TheFarriersDaughter · 26/03/2026 10:17

If I had one tiny complaint it would be that he did a thing with his glasses (half way down his nose, or half off) that I’ve never seen being done by anyone ‘young’. But I guess as an actor it’s nice to have tools to clay with for characterisation.

I’d be happy if it won lots of Oscars, but it would have been even more satisfying if less ‘family friendly’. Needed more grit. Though perhaps Rocky wouldn’t have worked if 18 certificate.

Purpleharlow · 26/03/2026 13:12

My partner wanted to see this but I wasn’t overly keen. We went out for something to eat at about 6 last night and he really wanted to go to the nearby cinema. I had my kindle with me so suggested he go and I just sit in the foyer on the lovely sofas and read and perhaps go for a walk on the beach.

He had a 2 for 1 ticket offer so I decided I’d go with him and give it a go. I even asked the lady selling the tickets if I found it unbearable could I come and just read. She said, ‘of course, but people have raved about this film. We’ve had it half a week and people have come back multiple times to see it again.’

Well, I thought it was amazing. It didn’t feel like it was over 2 and half hours. I laughed and cried and it was just such an ‘event’

The cinema was packed and everyone seemed enthralled. Ryan Gosling is so good in this film and I really enjoyed Sandra Hüller’s performance too. Rocky is adorable.

Oh and the soundtrack is fabulous and so fitting. Definitely highly recommended.

Honestly, it's so trivial and niche that almost everybody would think we're mad Grin - he doesn't balance the microcentrifuge Blush

😆 ex-molecular biologist here and as my scientist dh leaned across in the cinema I knew exactly what he was going to moan about.

One of my favourite books and the movie was 👎🏻 (iykyk 😏).

Chemenger · 26/03/2026 14:35

Just been to see it while waiting for my car to be serviced. It was brilliant, did not feel like two and a half hours at all. The cinema was absolutely silent throughout. It is right up there with The Martian for me. I loved the audio book and the film is just as good. Ryan Gosling is perfect in it.

MadisonAvenue · 27/03/2026 12:51

Sausagenbacon · 21/03/2026 22:57

Oh dear, i found it tedious. Much too long and sentimental.
I love Ryan Gosling, but i kept on wishing i was watching La La Land instead.
And what's with the fisting joke? Twice. Surely inappropriate

Edited

Tedious is the word I used when my husband asked if I’d enjoyed it as we left the cinema last night. I haven’t read the book so didn’t know anything about it and expected something a bit more exciting, and it just felt too long.

Mumneedstea · 27/03/2026 17:27

I just watched it today at Imax, having read the book earlier in the year. I absolutely loved loved loved the book! I think the movie was really good too and kept true to the Grace and Rocky friendship, but I missed so many details from the book!
I know the movie would be many many hours long if they kept everything in, and that would be unrealistic, but I would still like a longer version of it... Maybe a series with Gosling 😊

Although from an overall story perspective, I can't deny that it did stay true to the book.

Saw it last night (had no expectations as hadn't read the book or seen a trailer) and really enjoyed it, came out smiling.

I would say, whilst avoiding spoilers, that DH and I are both lab-based molecular biologists and we were perfectly happy suspending our disbelief over all the shonky pseudoscience in the film... apart from one tiny little seconds-long scene in which we both uttered small cries of horror!

Ha! I know exactly what scene you mean as my DD who is a biochemical student winced at it and then arghhed after the film.

Yeah my partner wears glasses and they are very expensive so you don't take risks with them like letting them just dangle precariously off your face! However I thought Gosling looked very cute in his glasses nonetheless!

corblimeyguvnr · 30/03/2026 13:23

It was all part of the quirky science teacher thing wasn't it ?
