I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

Been to see this today & loved it, I thought it was well done & the music was fab, really glad I saw it at the cinema I can’t imagine a small screen doing it justice they should win Oscar’s for it,

Mathsbabe · 31/03/2026 00:10

We loved the book. The film was amazing, we laughed and cried in all the right places.

angelopal · 31/03/2026 22:14

Went to see last night as had a rare child free night. Didn't know anything about it but like sci fi. Really enjoyed it.

Neve been a fan of Ryan Gosling but thought he was really good in it.

KnitFastDieWarm · 31/03/2026 23:34

Saw it this evening - it’s my DP’s favourite book and we both loved it. It reminds me of my favourite films from
the 80s and 90s - it treats the audience like adults and doesn’t waste time having characters explaining the plot to each other. The music is superb and there’s a trust in moments of silence to carry the drama, too. It’s moving without being preachy or saccharine. Everything is so tactile and believable and you can see the craft that’s gone into the visual effects. it’s wonderful to see a strong, beautiful, intelligent female character who isn’t 25 and ‘hollywood pretty’, and ryan gosling is shaping up to be a great lead actor with old-school expressiveness and charisma. One of the best films i’ve seen in years!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/03/2026 23:38

I spent a few moments here and there chuckling at things that other younger viewers in the cinema didn't laugh at.

The tune from Close Encounters was one.

And when I'd finally placed the French accent voice when they were trying voices for Rocky it made me laugh too.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/04/2026 17:47

I've been reading all your comments as I enjoyed the audiobook (Ray Porter does a lot of sci-fi so I've heard him quite a bit before and he's always good) and was worried that a film might be a disappointment. Plus I find Ryan Gosling quite annoying, especially in the promo interviews that he's been doing for this film. However, overall most people here have enjoyed it a lot so I think I might give it a go after Easter.

I didn't know that they were going to film Artemis. I found that book quite annoying. The world building was good but the lead character was dreadful. I can't help thinking that Andy Weir needed the protagonist to be irrational and irresponsible to drive the plot and that's why he chose to make the character female.

Nincompoo · 02/04/2026 19:24

I couldn’t get on with Artemis either but might give it another go.

Ninerainbows · 02/04/2026 19:54

I'm just back from seeing it again. DH and I had seen it but we took DS7 and he was gripped. Amazing film

Melarus · 02/04/2026 21:03

@KnitFastDieWarm ryan gosling is shaping up to be a great lead actor

Shaping up? He's 45! He's been playing leading roles since the mid-00s. His first Oscar nomination for Best Actor was 20 years ago. (Seems incredible that he hasn't won one yet.)

Anyway, I did enjoy the film loads, even though it was a great big mish-mash of genres and ideas, and didn't make a whole lot of sense - but it was so much fun! And the jokes were A1, top Lego movie energy. If you want a great sentimental action-comedy-sci-fi-thriller, this will surely fit the bill.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2026 21:23

DH and I went to see it this afternoon. I enjoyed it but the book is definitely a lot better. The Hail Mary wasn't particularly like it was in my mind which I found a bit distracting. They did one thing in the film that made so much more sense than in the book, Rocky spun up both ships while they were joined to give gravity, which wasn't possible in the book. The whole time that I was reading the book I couldn't work out why they had such an incredibly complicate 'separate to spin' system, I felt it was a huge vulnerability and likely point of failure, especially as he kept separating and then rejoining.

DH raised something that I had wondered about the book, why didn't they bring both ships to the planet Adrien? It would have been much easier to have used Rocky's ship with its external robots to retrieve the taumoeba.

Still find Ryan Gosling quite annoying, and it was a shame that they made Rocky have a cuter personality, he was amusingly curmudgeonly in the book.

Yuja · 04/04/2026 17:33

Just saw this with my DH, DD13 and DS almost 11. We all really enjoyed it. DS got a bit fidgety towards the end as it was long but overall we all had a great time 🙂

Ahwig · 04/04/2026 19:25

Dont like sci fi but went anyway . I didn’t understand it all but I really enjoyed it and couldn’t believe I was crying over a rock.

AlphaApple · 06/04/2026 16:50

The audio book is great. I am not at all a sci fi fan and I was hooked. The movie did a good job of the book but inevitably left a lot out. It might have been better as a mini series…

Do you think it is OK for a 9’and 11 year old? They’re fine with long movies so that’s not a worry, more the themes. The 11yo can get a bit anxious about both individual peril and big themes like climate change. 9yo copes better with dramatic themes but is only just turned c9.

Just replying to myself to say I did take them - 9yo loved it. 11yo was a bit overwhelmed and we had to step out for a few minutes during one of the more tense bits. So a lot depends on the child! Personally I loved it! Ryan Gosling was perfectly cast and Rocky was incredible puppet work.

Packed cinema which was great to see.

PuppyMonkey · 06/04/2026 23:42

Interesting reading all these comments saying how amazing you all thought it was. DP and I are just back from seeing it and it wasn’t what I was expecting at all - I thought it was going to be an edge of the seat sci-fi but I actually found it a bit silly and more of a children’s film. Nothing wrong with that I suppose and I appreciated the spectacle but it wasn’t for me. Loved The Martian though.

Kingsleadhat · 07/04/2026 00:09

I thought it was really boring and far too long and full of clichés. Ryan Gosling is very charming and great in the lighter hearted scenes but I thought he lacked the emotional depth to carry off the sadder scenes.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/04/2026 10:09

I walked out of this because I was so bored it was sending me to sleep.

I like Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller and I was happy they used a puppet and no green screen rather than having everything CGI-d, but I didn't engage with it at all and eventually gave up and went home about ninety minutes in (I think).

I'll catch the rest when it turns up as the BBC1 Big Christmas Day film next year.

LaProf · 07/04/2026 10:54

Sausagenbacon · 21/03/2026 22:57

Oh dear, i found it tedious. Much too long and sentimental.
I love Ryan Gosling, but i kept on wishing i was watching La La Land instead.
And what's with the fisting joke? Twice. Surely inappropriate

Edited

I saw it with DS15 yesterday and he loved it. I found it dragged. I hadn't read the book and eyerolled as soon as the alien best friend thing was introduced.

I did actually fall asleep at one point.

I did actually fall asleep at one point.

So did I, although the cinema was very warm and I was tired.

Thankfully I went to my local where Mondays are discount day, instead of forking out nigh on £30 for the IMAX plus bus there and back (which I'd originally planned to do) 😖

Mothership4two · 09/04/2026 01:48

I thought the book was great and loved the film. My one nit-pic (with the film) was how the last minute was handled. My DS (early 20s) agreed - he said he would have preferred it to have been a 15 (not sure I agree).

Same for me - was expecting it to be along the lines of The Martian but I also found this movie to be quite dull.

bookworm14 · 22/04/2026 19:44

I adored the film (and book) and now have a massive crush on Ryan Gosling, which I didn’t before. I think it was the glasses and cardigan! 😁
