I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

Oh dear, i found it tedious. Much too long and sentimental.
I love Ryan Gosling, but i kept on wishing i was watching La La Land instead.
And what's with the fisting joke? Twice. Surely inappropriate

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 21/03/2026 23:41

I loved it too, true enough to the book and well done.

Made me want to re-visit The Martian.

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 22/03/2026 01:43

Me and Ds have read the book and both completely loved the film. I wasn't a fan of the music except one key scene but my DS loved it.

Sausagenbacon · 22/03/2026 07:37

The scientific premise reminded me of Chubby Rain - the ridiculous film-with-a-film in Bowfinger.

It’s interesting isn’t it. It’s definitely got more “comedy” than the book.
I do feel I would have enjoyed it more had I not read the book (and known how it would end) but I enjoyed the book immensely so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes me too I think. I loved the film, and loved the comedy in it, and thought they did Rocky brilliantly, but I loved the book so much I think I overhyped the film to myself, DH and DS's. It was a bit long and, as with most films nowadays could have been 15 minutes shorter. But it was so faithful to the book. I do feel like going to see it again on my own!

ThursdayLastWeek · 22/03/2026 18:29

I really enjoyed it. I finished the audio book a week or so ago and really enjoyed that too!

im usually very much a if-I-liked-the-book-I-won’t-bother-with-the-film type of woman but in this case I think the differences made it a better movie experience.

The karaoke scene was incredibly moving. The comedy with Rocky was light and fun.
The slightly truncated ending stopped it being far too long and I will admit to zoning out slightly during the longer scientific explanations in the book. I don’t think the film missed them.

AgnesX · 22/03/2026 18:31

Oh interesting. Coincidentally I'm reading the book just now. Will keep my eye out for it.

nongnangning · 22/03/2026 21:19

I went to see it today. Really enjoyable - like a bro movie transposed into outer space and I was watching for the microcentrifuge booboo from this thread, all the way through.
i did think Ryan Gosling's character was remarkably talented:
a high level all rounder on physics, chemistry, biology and maths
was able to ponder deep questions of philosphy, learn a new language and be 100% emotionally intelligent
but also totally competent at DIY
and very good looking

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/03/2026 22:11

Havent read the book and only saw the one trailer months ago. Very emotionally whipslashed in parts! The karoke got me going amongst so many others. So many visually beautiful moments too! Very enjoyable didnt feel dragged out at any point

Imisscoffee2021 · 22/03/2026 22:22

I love The Martian, read it so many times and love the film, haven't yet read this but I saw the film the day it came out and found it entertaining, enjoyable, but strangely... forgettable? Maybe because amazon produced it, bit it didn't feel as real The Martian, it didn't go hard on anything (tragedy, comedy etc) it was all a bit surface level. Some stunning visuals and beautiful moments, and Ryan Gosling is so watchable, but wish id liked it more!

Isthisright220 · 22/03/2026 22:23

I don’t think it will be an Oscar contender because Oscar films are always released around 6 months prior to the awards.

Honestly, it's so trivial and niche that almost everybody would think we're mad Grin - he doesn't balance the microcentrifuge Blush

I noticed that too! I whispered to DH 'he's done the centrifuge wrong' 😄 We centrifuge blood and urine samples at work every day so it definitely stood out in a funny way. I absolutely loved the film though. I think the book is brilliant, I've read it a couple of times, and the film definitely lived up to it. Best film I've seen in quite a while.

SkaterGrrrrl · 23/03/2026 22:33

Saw it at the IMAX, loved it - feel good and spectacular. True to the book, too.

HyacinthsAndPeonies · 23/03/2026 22:44

Went to see it at our local Showcase cinema. Sat in The Gallery with heated reclining seats, was bliss. Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Rocky is adorable.

lovemetomybones · 23/03/2026 22:52

Amaze amaze amaze.

lovemetomybones · 23/03/2026 22:52

It was excellent and unusually as good as the book 📖

TofuTuesday · 24/03/2026 06:53

This thread is fascinating. I’ve seen the trailer several times (didn’t know it was a book) and written it off immediately as some kind of kids movie about saving the planet with a ‘cute’ rock character. Seems like it’s not?

Sausagenbacon · 24/03/2026 06:56

It is

stayawayfromthattrapdoor · 24/03/2026 07:07

Do you think it is OK for a 9’and 11 year old? They’re fine with long movies so that’s not a worry, more the themes. The 11yo can get a bit anxious about both individual peril and big themes like climate change. 9yo copes better with dramatic themes but is only just turned c9.

Pabbel · 24/03/2026 07:34

Brilliant feel good film, funny and entertaining, personally wouldnt have a problem with children watching it, not sure what age certificate it is.

It is a race to save earth from big peril and individual characters face danger so your 11 year old may find it upsetting.

I personally wouldn't take kids of that age and with those worries. It's people risking their lives to save the world and could be quite anxiety raising. It is also a long film with scientific explanations that kids of that age might struggle with.

Actually gasped out loud in the cinema when he did this!

My 10 year old wouldn’t have liked it though there are no particularly “scary” scenes. Nothing inappropriate per se.
My 12yo loved it, but he’s scientifically very curious and had already read the book.
