I was so looking forward to seeing the movie. Genuinely one of the best books I have ever read.
It was absolutely wonderful. I think I cried even more at the end than I did when I read it.
I think it will win best picture Oscar next year. And best actor for Ryan Gosling too.

Please tell me which scene!

Honestly, it's so trivial and niche that almost everybody would think we're mad Grin - he doesn't balance the microcentrifuge Blush

It’s not a weepie in the traditional sense.

It’s a 12A and I think younger than 9 (ish) may struggle with the length. I’m not an expert though, 11 year old granddaughter, been a while since my DC were young.
There’s no violence, no bad language, no sex, no drugs. A bit of vodka drinking. Pretty sure 10 years plus will love it too.

One of my kids is an adult! It was more would 2 teenage boys be embarrassedly sitting next to a snivelling middle aged woman and then have to endure an awkward bus ride home!

Wonderfully niche! We’ve got imax tickets booked for a couple of weeks time, and I shall take care to look out for that and inwardly tut.
So excited about seeing it - I loved the audiobook and nobody else in the house is going to get round to reading it or listening, so I’ve thrown in the towel and we’re all off to the imax!

Ponderingwindow · 15/03/2026 18:07

I’m going to ask this question in a vague way because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book or seen the movie. I have only read the book.

there is a plot point in the book that I consider essential to Ryland Grace’s character arc and his relatability to the Everyman. Did they include that plot point in the movie?

asnmum · 15/03/2026 18:19

One of my favourite books of recent years - I can’t wait to go, hoping to convince my eldest to come with me next weekend.

If you mean the part I think you mean - yes.

Ah, very good, it’s a movie though, he probably balanced it off camera!

I saw it last night and absolutely loved it, I found it so moving and was sobbing at the end like an idiot 😂

They will probably be crying too then.

It was my mother's day outing last night, was soooo good, inevitably there is stuff missing and stuff that was brushed over but that is due to the length of the book, they've done a great job, think I will like it as much as the martian once I've watched it another 7 or 8 times 😀

Yes! They do, i wondered this as well in fact I'd say they make a bigger deal of it in the film

Ridingthegravytrain · 15/03/2026 18:58

I can’t wait just booked tickets for next Saturday. I’m taking my parents husband and children because I can’t see why they wouldnt love it. Though to be fair my dad was the one who recommended the book to me

SkaterGrrrrl · 15/03/2026 18:59

Seeing it on Sunday!

BirdyBedtime · 15/03/2026 19:13

My DS has been waiting for this for ages and has been to see it today. He is not home yet and it is going to be really difficult for him not to talk about it (ADHD).

I swear I will kill him if he spoils it for me as I haven't read the book but am sooo looking forward to the movie (because DS loved the book so much) that I have taken the day off work on Thursday to go and see it.

PonyPrancing · 15/03/2026 19:13

I can’t wait to go and see this!

I saw a trailer weeks and weeks ago, maybe even before Christmas, and was glued to the screen. I had never heard of it, and despite being a big sci- if fan had never heard of Andy Weir, or ever seen The Martian (although I have heard of it, the rock i live under isn’t that big 😁)

I am pretty much isolating due to cancer treatment and shattered immune system but every couple of weeks I’ve been popping into local charity shops hoping to find the book. No luck yet but skim reading this thread I’m sort of glad. Back then March seemed so far away I thought I’d find the book and read it with weeks to spare but here we are and the film is here.

Generally the book is always better than the film but you guys all seem really happy with the film which means the book will be amazing when I do find it.

Thanks for the heads up about the potential for crying. It’s been a tough 10 months for me and my emotions are shot to pieces so a good cry will do me the world of good. It was only a few days ago I thought to myself I need an emotional purge and had no idea PHM could be the ‘thing’ to help me.

I’m even more excited now!! I’m a loner and will be going to a local small independent cinema on a week day showing and hoping to pretty much have the screening to myself so fingers crossed!

I haven’t done a lone cinema trip since Avatar which I think was 2009 or so and that was amazing.

Again, no spoilers but have they kept the same ending as the book? The ending of the book was just perfect.

Yes. Mostly

I was so excited to see this film, having loved the book, and I was not disappointed. I’ve never understood the need to watch films more than once (whilst reading books over and over), but OMG, if I could go back tomorrow I would. The characters were just perfect and it stayed (mostly) true to the book. A few things were glossed over (done quickly), but it was a long film anyway. DD is 12, and watched the main emotional bit through her fingers - I’m not sure how
I didn’t cry.

I’m afraid I haven’t read the book!

Octavia64 · 15/03/2026 20:23

Saw it yesterday with dd.

loved it.

ending yes the same pretty much.

really, really good film.
not spoiled at all by dd narrating where each space picture and planet came from. (She’s autistic)

mum2jakie · 15/03/2026 20:51

Watched it today. Agree with all posters, this was a really moving but feel good film. Was ober 2.5 hours long but didn't flag at all. Not a minute wasted. Hadn't read the book so can't say how this compares but great as a standalone film.

ChickNorris · 15/03/2026 20:57

Haven't seen Project Hail Mary yet but having seen the trailer now it really really reminded me of something else. There is also a movie called Spaceman with Adam Sandler that looks a lot like Project Hail Mary. A lot. At first I thought I was going crazy but apparently it's just similar themes, explored differently.
It came out 2 years ago and is still on Netflix if anyone fancies something else like it.

I read that this is a remake of the film Sunshine from ten years ago. Anyone know if that’s true?

No it's a film of the novel Project Hail Mary while a few aspects of the plot over lap with Sunshine it's a completely different story.
