Ding fucking Dong!

What a lovely, if emotional watch.

Favourite bits:

Bridget getting her diary and pen out again and the film “truly” starting.

“Modern Love” dance with the kids.

Flash backs to Mark.

Cleaver remembering he has an estranged son and making contact.

🤣🤣 Tesco meal deal faux pas

🤣🤣🤣 “I had the most amazing sex” in front of a studio audience

Daniel and Bridget’s relationship now.

🥲🥲🥲 Bridget’s dad in his last days.

🥲🥲 Bridget realising that the relationship with Roxter cannot continue

🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 “I’ll do anything”

OP posts:

I went to see it with my mum and she actually found it quite hard to watch, we lost my dad 30 years ago next month and mum was only in her early 40's so it was quite close to home. She did say she thought it was an excellent film and really well done, that's why it had such an effect on her.
Personally I loved it, so much better than BJB

I thought the scenes with the other school
Parents were peak Mumsnet.

Absolutely

The mum of the two twins with the awful husband would be straight on mn with an Aibu when he kids didn't get a piano solo or whatever it was

@NetZeroZealot on the DCs sharing the room, I wondered about that but then thought that maybe they chose to because of their DF dying and they wanted to be close or maybe it made the scenes with the DM easier because both DCs in same room.

We have plenty of bedrooms for our DCs to have one each and yet our 2 youngest shared until the youngest decided he no longer wanted to (he was about 10 at the time). He'd always wanted to share until very near the end of primary school & his older brother didn't mind either way, so they shared until they chose not to. So for me, the DCs sharing seemed perfectly natural.

Re money - Mark was a world class lawyer so I assume he left her so well provided for that she'd never have to work again.

In sure she probably got some compo from the British government as he was killed on the job.

TerrorAustralis · 23/02/2025 03:33

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. It’s not going to win awards, but I laughed and cried. I’m glad it was an improvement on BJB, which was frankly terrible.

I loved all the little Easter eggs. Right at the end I think it’s Tom who says Pam is “perfect just as she is”.

The only bit I didn’t get was the Isla Fisher cameo. I thought she would reappear and we’d find out more about who she was. It feels like that story line ended up on the cutting room floor.

The condom scene in the chemist, since when would a shop assistant read out each item loudly ?!

Are there no self-charge machines in drug stores?

Apparently not - just a cameo

Saw this last night and loved it although she should have picked Leo Woodall. Cried lots!

I've asked this on the non-spoiler thread, too: I watched the film last night and I'm trawling through soundtrack listings looking for one of the songs. I recognised it and love it, but I can't remember what it is, and it doesn't appear in any of the soundtrack lists I've found. It's instrumental and electronic-ish, I think. It played fairly early on in scenes in her house. Does anyone know which song I'm talking about? I'm getting desperate.

Erasure if no one has said so already.

I saw it today, absolutely loved it ,cried through most of it. SO well done.

Really recommend the Helen Fielding interview on iPlayer, explains how she wrote the books and who they were based on.

i laughed at cleaver in the first scene but after that i didn't like it at all.
why did she introduce leo person's character to the kids so soon? why was the science teacher on the gate in school every morning. i saw the woman who played beatrice or eugenie from the windsors - why wasn't she written into it more? why did bridget order four glasses of wine in the pub and not just get a bottle? why wasn't her mum and celia imrie in it more?

why did the kids share a bedroom? i saw that dan mazer was one of the writers - he did borat/bruno/i give it a year and they were all very funny so how come he couldn't have got funnier stuff into the film?
i thought betterman was the best film ive seen ever so maybe i had too much expectation having seen that literally 2 weeks ago.

i wanted to really like it but i didn't

I shared a bedroom with my sister despite living in a house with loads of bedrooms , we wanted to,maybe they wanted to after such a traumatic event,it's not a documentary 😉

I don't think her young lover would turn up with pie.

icelolly12 · 23/02/2025 23:35

Bit late to the party as just watched it this evening, but a few thoughts...

Loved RZ in general

It was funnier than I was expecting

Hated the balloon release and was just thinking of the poor marine life

Would have preferred the storyline to be about her gaining her own independence after the toyboy fiasco rather than it being about finding a boring man as her happiness.

Didn't get the owl thing

Didn't like how it jumped from the Lake District in Summer to a snowy scene

Hated the sleazyness of Daniel and the fact no one including Bridget pulled him up on it, come on it's not 2000 we've moved on

Why was Isla Fischer in it for 5 seconds?!

Haha yes what was the pie thing all about. I thought he'd end up with the babysitter!

Perhaps we should start another thread about what we thought the ending was.

I never realised that she ended up with the teacher. I kept an open mind but if I think deep about it, I thought maybe Daniel passed away too.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/02/2025 13:37

Yes I also thought Rockster would end up with Chloe the Nanny

I thought that as well, or that she’d end up with Daniel’s son

MilesOfMotivation · 24/02/2025 13:48

The friends drinking blue cocktails . They’d have had Aperol Spritz or Negronis now.

I am hitting my late 40s and if there's a blue cocktail on the list, I'm having it 😂

Pemba · 24/02/2025 14:58

I think the blue cocktails were maybe a reference to the blue soup she made at her dinner party, in the first film?

I loved this final outing (they've made that clear) for Bridget. Funny, sad and heartwarming. The little girl was so cute, and both kids acted brilliantly. And Bridget got a happy ending, in spite of the tragedy of the death of Mark. I do get the feeling that a lot of scenes might have been cut from the final version though. Like she'd just begun a relationship with the teacher and then suddenly a year has gone by? But overall it was very enjoyable.

But they're not going to film a whole year of them going to restaurants/Asda/ cinema etc are they? 😂

Cocktails were definitely a nod to the blue soup!

Pemba · 24/02/2025 15:52

Not trips to Asda obviously, (!) but if Bridget ended up with him it would have been nice to have glimpsed a bit of how their relationship developed. I would guess that it might not have been so uncomplicated, not much is, especially with Bridget! . He is obviously a good guy but I can see difficulties they might have had. His very scientific view of the meaning of life/dismissal of anything spiritual, his obsessive whistle blowing, her scattiness, does it ever irritate him?, does he wish he could have had kids of his own? (Bridget is obviously too old for that now), there could have been a lot to explore.

And Chewitel Ejiofor is such a well known actor that's why I think there could be stuff on the cutting room floor, as they used to say, that they had to take out to keep the running time down.

And like pps said, you felt there was stuff missing about her (famous?) neighbour.

The neighbour thing was really weird and had me trying to remember if I's missed something from the books. I think that was the only thing that didn't work in the film.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 24/02/2025 21:49

Haven't seen any of the others so nothing to compare it to but found it lovely but moving! Didn't quite get Rockster at the party diving in the very shallow looking pool thought that was going to be in her head. But when she was looking through the stuff 😭

Need to actually now go back and see the others..

Weepixie · 24/02/2025 22:04

Why was she walking around with her eyes almost closed for large parts of the film? Also the very strange walk she was doing?

I loved the film apart from the weird walking and the funny faces.
