Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

Oh noo....I've just talked my reluctant husband into taking our kids as he can't stand the previous movies. I thought it would be decent.🙈

FinallyFinalGirl · 08/12/2023 22:36

He hated the other films you mentioned, mind you!😆

ArchetypalBusyMum · 08/12/2023 22:42

Oh nooo, I hope not, we've booked to see as family treat between Xmas and New year based on trailer looking great. 😬
Hated the Depp wonka film, so much! If it's as bad as that it'll be rather disappointing!

Isn't TC doing a biopic playing Bob Dylan (or have i dreamt that?), so you'd hope he can sing!

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 22:43

Its got a similar feel to Paddington. You might love it cos I've lowered your expectations!

I thought it looked great based on the trailer. It's better than the Depp film, that was just weird.

Oh, I've just seen it and really liked it! Thought it was a little too long though but most movies are these days. I was dubious about Timothee playing the role but thought he was actually really quite good in it. Olivia Coleman played her character well also. And I thought the girl was cute! Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa was the best part though. Yes to massive plot holes but I think it's just a silly type of fun movie that it kind of makes it okay. We clearly have different tastes 😂

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 23:05

Yes I can totally live with daft plot holes normally and it's totally my sort of film! Loved Olivia Coleman and Tom Davis but just found it meh! Most of the songs were really bad and I love musicals.

I am apprehensive to watch it anyway cos when I look at Timothy chalamet I don't see a fully grown man, I see a 14 year old boy, even though he is a fully grown man!

Is it just me

Beautifulsunflowers · 08/12/2023 23:09

I loved it!! Loved the fun easy to watch plot, thought the music was great. Loved the cast.
each to their own I guess!

dullandgrey · 08/12/2023 23:10

@Jimmyneutronsforehead yes, he does look very young but the storyline is about Wonkas early life before the other movies so it makes sense

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 23:11

He was quite good, apart from the singing.
I think it also annoyed me that it feels a very British film, loads of British actors but Wonka and the girl in it (Noodle) are American. Why couldn't they have cast British actors for those parts?

Aww we saw it tonight and really loved it! Me and my friend said how much we loved it and my son said it’s now the best film he’s seen. He’s 7 so easily swayed but we liked the plot and the jokes

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 23:12

He does look right for the part. And has lots of charisma.
I wish Hugh Grant had been in it more, he was hilarious.

ALightOverThere · 08/12/2023 23:17

I agree, OP. Dull under-developed characters, no real plot. It has a great cast but they’re wasted.

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 23:22

Yes, it could have been so much better couldn't it. The writing was poor.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/12/2023 23:23

@dullandgrey I'll watch it with a cautiously open mind then.

There's just something about seeing him on adverts and trailers for other things that make me shudder.

penjil · 08/12/2023 23:27

I saw the trailer and thought it looked awful. I don't think Timothy Chalamet is a big enough star to pull it off, and the Hugh Grant character came across as annoying and embarrassing.
It looked spectacular, but the script seemed naff and unfunny.
And to think the best bits would've been in the trailer too. 😬

PictureFrameWindow · 08/12/2023 23:29

We're going tomorrow and really looking forward to it. We loved both Paddingtons and hoping for a bit of joyful silliness to ward off the depressing real world!

SaturdayGiraffe · 08/12/2023 23:30

I thought it was delightful. There aren’t that many fun films out at the moment.
If you’re expecting a continuation of the other Charlie/Wonka films it isn’t like them, but I’m equally not sure how much character development there was in those ones either.
Just lighthearted fun!

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/12/2023 23:30

No idea why it was made. Gene Wilder was perfection.

DumpedByText · 08/12/2023 23:35

My 16 year daughter went to watch it tonight, in her words 'it was so bad it was funny'!

She said it was awful and couldn't wait for it to finish. I asked her if it was as bad as Barbie and she said it was worse.

You do realise it’s not a remake?

I love Gene Wilders wonka. Love it. But I also love the new Wonka. It’s a prequel.

Pigeonqueen · 08/12/2023 23:38

I think people have lost all sense of fun. It’s meant to be entertaining and fun. That’s it. People take things so seriously now.

No, I didn’t! So thanks, that’ll teach me. Might watch it now.
