Eurgh!!!!

Who calls you it? I always put Ms and it gets adhered to. Unless someone is saying it verbally to you? Like hello Mrs?! That is rude.

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:47

@DiscoBob Mostly the kids I teach. And my Dad 😂

BlusteryLake · 25/08/2025 18:49

What's the context here? Do they know your surname?

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:50

@BlusteryLake Yes. But as soon as they know I'm married I become Mrs D-B!!!

BlusteryLake · 25/08/2025 18:50

Sorry, cross post. Is it a secondary school? At ours they students just use Sir or Miss for all teachers and adults in authority.

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:51

@BlusteryLake Primary. The parents are just as bad!

ForZanyAquaViewer · 25/08/2025 18:52

Have you asked them (particularly your dad) to stop?

I don’t think I’ve ever been called Mrs in my life.

BlusteryLake · 25/08/2025 18:52

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:50

@BlusteryLake Yes. But as soon as they know I'm married I become Mrs D-B!!!

I guess you just need to correct them. I don't think it's particularly surprising that people default to Mrs for a woman they know to be married in the absence of any other guidance.

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:53

@ForZanyAquaViewer My dad is appalled that a married woman would not immediately become Mrs Hisname!!! I mean, I have a child!!!!!

OP posts:
everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:54

@BlusteryLake I do, and I explain you don't have to change your title and/or last name, but after a while it just defaults back to Mrs.

OP posts:
BlusteryLake · 25/08/2025 18:55

Awful that your dad does it though. He absolutely knows not to but is refusing to.

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:56

@BlusteryLake He holds incredibly dated views but then I am in a small minority I suppose.

TaborlinTheGreat · 25/08/2025 18:59

I don't think it's awful, it just happens to be incorrect in your case. People make mistakes or forget. Lots of married women still are 'Mrs'. 'Eurgh' is a ridiculous overreaction unless you think the kids you teach are doing it deliberately because they think women should have to be 'Mrs'. Your dad needs putting straight though. I'm Mrs. The kids I teach very often call me Miss. It doesn't bother me at all tbh.

Solobanana · 25/08/2025 19:01

It’s habit/automatic language for the kids. It’s difficult for them to remember who’s married or who’s not. I don’t even know all the staff who are Mrs/miss/ms/ etc. And you aren’t important enough in their minds to store that bit of information amongst all the other things they need to remember. Heck- you’ll probably have been called mum/dad/grandma/grandad at some point.- and yes secondary school kids do this. As along as they have respectful behaviour in the classroom/school- it’s a bit of a random one to get worked up about when there are more pressing concerns in the actual classroom (I’m generalising on the assumption that you are a state school teacher.)

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 19:04

I guess i just don't appreciate the assumption that I'm a Mrs like it's some sort of "default". Life would be so much easier if there was one universal title for women as there is for men!

I would get very very cross (and vocal) with your Dad.

The kids you just keep gently correcting. They have to learn somewhere and school is as good a place as any!

StrikeandRobinlol · 25/08/2025 19:12

You’re married so technically a Mrs?? What am i missing. If you don’t like it just some gentle correction i wouldn’t get hung up on it

Would you get you get annoyed if people didn’t call you Dr or Captain or whatever 😆

hamstersarse · 25/08/2025 19:13

Worse things happen at sea. And pretty much every day in life.

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 19:15

@StrikeandRobinlol Technically never a Mrs. Not even on my marriage certificate envelope. Nobody is ever "Technically a Mrs."

Surroundedbyfools · 25/08/2025 19:18

Couldn’t bring myself to get worked up over this. I am mrs married name and any work things that are still in my maiden name I put ms maiden name. It’s really not a big deal

Coffeeishot · 25/08/2025 19:18

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 18:47

@DiscoBob Mostly the kids I teach. And my Dad 😂

Surely the children know your title ? My Dd is married i.have never addressed her as Mrs or Ms or whoever, why is your dad calling you Mrs in day to day life ?

Coffeeishot · 25/08/2025 19:19

Maybe shes after a "your highness" 👸

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 19:20

It is a huge deal to me. As I imagine it is to a lot of other married Ms women. Those saying it's not a big deal I'm guessing are those who are married Mrs. Happy to be corrected though.

OP posts:
mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/08/2025 19:21

I always use ms but have offended women who want everyone to know that theyre married 😭

everychildmatters · 25/08/2025 19:22

@Coffeeishot I'm guessing you are a married Mrs? 😀 So, with respect, you don't really understand the issue. But equally fascinating that you assume married women who go by Ms are "high and mighty."
