I can’t stand that phrase/attitude. I pulled a friend up about using that comment and said how harmful it was. Funnily enough she has 3 daughters, no sons.
Really glad my mum (dad was absent) didn’t bring my brothers up like this. They were older than me so were actually given more tasks and responsibilities around the house.
When I taught abroad in east Asia the boys in some of my classes were shocked when I pulled them up on certain things that usually only the girls would get told off for - like speaking far too loudly during class. They asked why I didn’t tell the girls to lower their voice and I said because they weren’t being overly loud!
So to them a slightly animated girl was the equivalent of an extremely loud boy.
The standard of good behaviour is often set much higher for girls and it irks me.
