And yes trial by media is not ideal, but it is apparently the route the victims were more comfortable with.

Many of the victims tried reporting to the police and got nowhere?

Surely you know how many victims of sexual assault don't feel comfortable reporting, or are pressured to not report. Or when they do it goes nowhere, or the reponse is so unsupportive they end up dropping it. This is in cases with "normal" perpertrators, let alone one with the money and power Brand has.

I cannot believe this needs saying on a MN thread, let alone one on the feminism board.

ValerieDoonican · 16/09/2023 19:23

Also, the collateral damage to the careers of women who cannot wotk on the top shows with top 'talent' because the channel doesn't want them assaulted. As Gloswitch says and I agree, Brand is just an illustration, the issue is the industry Gloswitch tweet

And fwiw I never for one moment considered reporting my rape (long ago and in another European country) to the police. I thought the likeliest outcome would probably be just more sexual assault.

I must admit i don’t like trial by media. This should be dealt with by the police and judicial system. He as a right to a trial and a defence.

The problem with that is that we've all seen it's highly unlikely to be taken seriously until it's been a press scandal.

Furryrug · 16/09/2023 19:30

Journalists have done a similar investigation on Dan Wootton and sent all the evidence to the police but the story on him seems to have gone very quiet .

Liverpool52 · 16/09/2023 19:32

The most depressing thing about this thread is the wilful ignorance of many to how ineffective the justice system is for victims of sexual abuse. There's no need to read the actual articles to get an idea of it, the headlines say enough.

So the disbelief about incidents not being reported or faux outrage about trial by media is astonishing.

Of course innocent until proven guilty is the ideal but we are far from ideal and so when complainants can rarely get to court why should the accused be given the benefit of the doubt.

WarriorN · 16/09/2023 19:32

Gloswitch is right.

MariePaperRoses · 16/09/2023 19:42

I can't stand him and never have but it was always on the cards that he would be cancelled.

It's a witch hunt.

ChillysWaterBottle · 16/09/2023 19:43

Fucking hell these comments. I'd be ashamed to be some of you.

Can't imagine anyone is surprised by Brand. I wish nothing but healing and justice for his victims, even if the latter is unlikely, and I hope they're being protected and supported.

MermaidMaggie · 16/09/2023 19:43

I am a survivor of SA and I don't support a trial by media.

I fully support victims of SA and strongly feel the justice system needs to do more to support victims bringing their abusers to account.

But the presumption of innocence and the requirement to prove guilt is a cornerstone of our legal system. When that is taken away in a trial by media, then no one is safe. Anyone can say anything and the accused would have no recourse to defence. That puts everyone at risk and no one is safe.

CornishGem1975 · 16/09/2023 19:44

At the moment, the key word is allegedly. None of us know anything. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. That's up to a court to decide.

renthead · 16/09/2023 19:44

I can't believe this is the level of discourse in the feminism topic. This defense of RB is one of the most depressing things I've ever seen on MN. Have people saying this is a witch hunt actually read The Times article?

CornishGem1975 · 16/09/2023 19:44

Upsizer · 16/09/2023 16:44

Agree - it’s entirely unsurprising. Sex addict is sex addict.

Alan Titchmarsh would have raised some eyebrows but not this.

Sex addict doesn't = rapist though, or does it?

I remember this style of username from height of the anti-vaccine posts on MN days.

Always a new user, always pushing fake claims, always along the vein of
place name - typical mum name - DOB

CornishGem1975 · 16/09/2023 19:48

Ugh sorry to disappoint @henlee but I've been on here for years.

CornishGem1975 · 16/09/2023 19:48

And for the record, I'm pro-vaccine do that kind of shoots your theory to shit doesn't it @henlee

Meanwhile on FWR, descriptions of the public denunciation, shaming and cancellation of women who make comments about protecting children form harm on private fb accounts are ten a penny.

verdantverdure · 16/09/2023 20:23

How many of the rape apologists claim to care about women's rights?

Or protecting children?

"Brand, then 30, sent a car to her secondary school to take her out of lessons and to his home, she says."

You do know he uses social media for this right? No actual proof. Just him sat in his very expensive shed speculating whilst the money rolls in. I’ll save my sympathy on this one.

Luckily he’s got Andrew Tate in his corner!

Highandlows · 16/09/2023 20:30

Channel 4 does a programme about Brands alleged behaviour some of which allegedly occurred while he was working at .............................Channel 4!

This

Is that a proven fact or just what she is alleging?

He probably did as he strikes me as being an utter sleaze-bag but until these allegations have been proven in court it's just her word against his.

romdowa · 16/09/2023 18:58

While the things he has been accused of are awful , I still don't agree with trial by media, especially not by anonymous sources. Everybody accused of a crime has the right to a fair trial and to mount a defense. Just because the things they are accused of are horrible , it still isn't an excuse to remove someone's rights. It's a very slippery slope and the way the law stands People are entitled to be presumed innocent until proven otherwise by a court of law. I cannot support the circumvention of our judicial system and our laws, no matter how crap they may be.

This is exactly where I am.

This could happen to any one of us and thats not what I want for my life.

I think people find it easier to think this is ok because its about someone that few people like or an unpleasant character.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 16/09/2023 20:43

A big old lurch into the conspiracy space would be quite helpful for someone who was concerned they might one day soon be “cancelled” and need to shout “witch-hunt”.

Mischance · 16/09/2023 20:45

I am not surprised by the allegations. Let us hope it will be properly investigated and he will be brought to trial if there is appropriate evidence.
