It's not just about him though is it.

It's how the media companies were complicit or turned blind eyes.

Yep.

Plus we know in the UK reporting sexual assault is essentially pointless, but when the perp holds any form of power, it is even more pointless. We know that victims are often treated poorly and in some cases mocked and blamed by the officers who are supposed to help and support them.

Lottapianos · 16/09/2023 17:16

That's a pretty sickening read. The allegations go WAY beyond mere 'promiscuity'. The piece claims that multiple complaints were made to senior BBC staff about his behaviour in the studio, and SHOCKINGLY (not), absolutely nothing was done about it. So I hope the inevitable whingers bear that in mind when hand wringing about how no one reported anything at the time

The alleged cozy chat with Jimmy Savile is particularly chilling

VeloVixen · 16/09/2023 17:21

It’s just awful isn’t it. I do feel awful for the women and my main sympathies are with them. I can understand that even with some evidence and others backing you up the thought of being picked apart on the stand in a trial sounds so horrific that some just can’t face it.

Brand is toast regardless of whether or not there are ever criminal proceedings against him. His “career” will not survive this.

chosenone · 16/09/2023 17:21

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️What a shit typo!!!!

Exactly

rockingbird · 16/09/2023 17:23

I do feel for the alleged victims but this isn't news, this is the media trying to take down a very opinionated person. Reading senior bbc bosses were concerned about his behaviour is kind of embarrassing-when have they ever cared before!! Definitely not the news story or all news stories and those suggesting so on X (Twitter) are bitter frigging haters

BrontëParsonage · 16/09/2023 17:29

@rockingbird I’m more than happy to be called a ‘bitter frigging hater’ while doing my bit to spread the word about a man who is accused of rape, sexual assaults and abuse.

'I do feel for the alleged victims but this isn't news, this is the media trying to take down a very opinionated person'

Rubbish. It's not news that he's a 'shagger', but these allegations go WAY beyond that. Read the Times article but be warned, you will need a very strong stomach

Makes you realise that his reinvention into 'self generated media' probably wasn't 'just because' bbc etc can't be trusted.

After savile they all held him at arm's length.

He's been grifting and grooming anyone who's been watching and listening to him.

VeloVixen · 16/09/2023 16:46

I must admit i don’t like trial by media. This should be dealt with by the police and judicial system. He as a right to a trial and a defence.

That could be an option, if rape weren't effectively decriminalised.

Can you imagine a criminal trial? He'd claim it was all about money and they consented. Like Kevin Spacey.

We shouldn't need a criminal level of proof to deal with sexually incontent, rapey men. I mean, the Savile text ffs.

This makes complete sense.

JaneJeffer · 16/09/2023 17:44

The thing about the Saville chat is that you can just imagine RB going along with it as a joke and taking the piss but written down it looks bad.

BrontëParsonage · 16/09/2023 17:50

@JaneJeffer honestly?

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 16/09/2023 17:52

Yes @BrontëParsonage have you ever watched him on tv? I can well imagine him taking the piss out of JS for thinking any young woman would be interested in him.

Was about to say the same thing. All this media drama creates such muddy waters from a legal point of view.

BrontëParsonage · 16/09/2023 17:55

@JaneJeffer would that be in the same vein of his ‘humour’ when he (and, let’s face it, his fellow sleaze, Jonathon Ross) left that infamous message on the answer machine of Andrew Sachs? Personally, I don’t find men who are accused of serial rapes, sexual assaults and abuse all that funny.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 16/09/2023 17:57

What are you picking on me for @BrontëParsonage ?

WarriorN · 16/09/2023 17:59

I wonder how many women aren't on record.

It's trial by media because clearly he'd have been formally accused of sexual assault a long time ago.

He's a media personality who's fame has been his shield.

StoneColdAlibi · 16/09/2023 18:02

You can't win.
This has been an open secret in the industry for years, alluded to most obliquely by Katherine Ryan and Sara Pascoe.
And now it is being brought to light we get responses like the above underplaying it as promiscuity and being a 'shagger'.
I don't doubt legal repercussions will follow but thank god some parts the industry are speaking out finally. Just like everyone lamented them failing to do with Saville. 🙄

JenniferBooth · 16/09/2023 18:04

Channel 4 does a programme about Brands alleged behaviour some of which allegedly occurred while he was working at .............................Channel 4!

WarriorN · 16/09/2023 18:07

Yes I'm a bit 😒 about responses here.

He was in his 30s with the 16 year old.

WarriorN · 16/09/2023 18:09

And sending cars to take her out of lessons

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2023 18:12

Personally I was more shocked at Huw Edwards!!

He is a horrible man and it's sad if these victims didn't feel they could report through the proper channels dealing with crime, but this is most definitely a case of total media hype and not the way if I was a victim I would want it all to go.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/09/2023 18:15

Why women FFS can't seem to separate promiscuity (all good fill your boots) with rape is unfathomable to me. Liking sex, wanting sex, enjoying sex, whatever. The second there isn't enthusiastic consent, it's a completely and totally different thing.
