Started a new thread as I can see previous OP hadn’t been on for a while.

Hope you're all ok and not hating the heat as much as I do?!
Dd seems ok (ish) shell feel better once dh is back I think
Weird to think secondary school is done!

Okisenough · 19/06/2025 14:16

We are all melting here! Everyone else is away so I have been on my own for the last 30 hours and I didn't realise how much I needed this time. All back late tonight which I am not looking forward to! I think I'm burnt out (probably have been for about a year), not sure what to do about that though. Sigh! As we all know it's hard to give ourselves the time we need.

Glad to hear your dd is ok and yes I still find it weird that I no longer have to think about school yet every summer, I feel panicked about needing to buy shoes and supplies 🙄

destiel00 · 19/06/2025 14:30

Sorry to hear you're melting too 😫
I HATE the heat
Gah
Burnt out - yes, totally get that. I think that's what's wrong with me. Like you, no idea what I actually do about it 😔

DarkChocHolic · 19/06/2025 19:33

@Okisenough I know what you mean about wanting the house to yourself for more
All I want now is a week at home by myself in my PJs and some takeaways in the fridge and some books to read
I don't even want to look after an indoor potted plant.
Who wants a holiday abroad huh....
I understand feeling the burnout and then feel guilty when I nag DD as she probably feels it a million times worse

Xx

destiel00 · 20/06/2025 20:35

Sigh.
Dd is finding lack structure and anxiety about thr future really hard. I just don't know what to say that I haven't already said 😕

DarkChocHolic · 20/06/2025 21:11

@destiel00
Am with you!
Am fed up of hearing my own voice over and over again saying the same bloody things.
Holidays and lack of structure is something I always struggled with DD. Everything I suggest is a no..neither can she find things she wants to do which doesn't involve eating or spending money.
DS on the other hand has no problems pottering around the entire 6 weeks.

destiel00 · 20/06/2025 21:40

@DarkChocHolic
It's maddening, isn't it?
It's 11 weeks for dd 😫
We are away for a week but that will come with its own issues, I'm sure
Dh is back tomorrow, thank God, so he can take over for a bit.
Older dd got news today that shes passed her final assessment! She's still miserable and still has a lot of work to do but at least she'll have a qualification.

DarkChocHolic · 20/06/2025 21:48

@destiel00
Glad to hear about older DDs assessment. One thing less for you to worry about atleast for now

destiel00 · 20/06/2025 22:21

Thank you.
Something to be happy about which makes a nice change!

Okisenough · 20/06/2025 23:50

@destiel00 congratulations to your DD. I think once things calm down, she will be pleased about this.

Okisenough · 20/06/2025 23:50

@destiel00 congratulations to your DD. I think once things calm down, she will be pleased about this.

Thank you.
I hope so! It's been am awful experience for her but shes learnt a lot

MinionKevin · 21/06/2025 20:41

DD went to the leavers assembly and prom no issue and enjoyed herself. I just wish she had been in this position a few years ago, she’s missed out so much of secondary school.
we have a few things planned this week which hopefully will keep her occupied.
The sixth form has a taster day but she’s refusing to go as she won’t have a friend in every lesson. Which is a bit sad as I think it would be fun.

destiel00 · 21/06/2025 22:08

@MinionKevin
Oh, that is a shame. Dds taster day is in a couple of weeks.
How wonderful that she went to leavers and prom :)

destiel00 · 01/07/2025 12:29

Hi 👋
Hope you are all doing ok?
It's officially summer holidays 🤪 what a shame I hate the heat 🥵
Dd seems ok. It's a busy week for her and her hobby group.
6th form taster day on friday, too.
Older dd has passed her postgrad but she's absolutely hated it, so no idea what's going on after summer 🤦‍♀️
She's worked herself into the ground so ske deserves a break
So now we await gcse results day!

Okisenough · 01/07/2025 18:14

We are ok here, had a bit of a wobble with one of my older dc but I think that's a bit better. It's always the way, when one is ok, one of the others bring something to worry you! The insane heat doesn't help with emotions!

@destiel00 yep let your older dd rest for a bit, and hopefully with some distance she will view her pg course/future with more objective eyes.

destiel00 · 01/07/2025 18:59

Sorry to hear that @Okisenough
If its not one its the other or elderly mum and pils!

DarkChocHolic · 01/07/2025 19:53

Gosh the heat is awful...I had a dreadful day commuting in a train that was at least 45 degrees hot.

Hope everyone is coping as much as possible
DD has finished college and not back until second week of September.
She is already bored, has no hobbies, has no money to keep socialising and generally eating my head off
We struggle during term time and we struggle during holidays. Sigh!!!
She was just the same as a toddler...I am bored..I am bored..
Ffs you are now 18...

@destiel00 glad DD busy with hobby group. Hope it lasts all through summer

@Okisenough sorry to hear older DC had troubles. Hopefully all sorted.
I was telling DH we lucked out with younger DS. He is honestly such a breeze compared to DD. Feel terrible saying this but I would not have coped if he was the same.

MinionKevin · 01/07/2025 20:18

DD is coping better than usual with the holidays. But it has just occurred to her she still has over 8 weeks left.
She’s much happier to leave the house and see friends than she was a few years ago. However the break between gcse and a levels is just too long and there is so little for them to do.
I do also remember being very bored in this long break though.
DH suggested she got a job! However even if she was okay with doing that, there really isn’t jobs for 16 year olds anymore.

OP posts:
destiel00 · 01/07/2025 21:13

@DarkChocHolic
Omg, you poor thing 😢 I think I'd faint in that heat 🥵
Dd has just heard she's got some hours work on Thursday so that'll be good (she likes to spend!)
For older dd she needs the long summer but for most its far too long (I was always desperate to get back to school after the summer)

DarkChocHolic · 01/07/2025 21:46

@MinionKevin
Would DD do a lifeguard course?
I do agree there are very few jobs for 16 year olds
Ask her to keep looking though.
DD didn't get any during summer of GCSE but in September she got a job. That's usually when the uni students go back and places are looking for students.
Could she volunteer? Food bank, library etc
It is hard I do empathise.

Unfortunately she won’t do anything with strangers. So that rules out almost everything.
we had only started going to school regularly in those last few months and it’s been pulled away.

destiel00 · 03/07/2025 17:03

Well.
Taster day did not go well. She hated it.
She has no plan b...
What do we do?
I'll be contacting 2 other 6th forms tomorrow to ask about late applications
Ffs

Okisenough · 03/07/2025 20:10

Are there any FE colleges near you?

MinionKevin · 03/07/2025 20:16

Lots of people even still change in the first few weeks. I know my local college takes applications right into October, so there is still plenty of time. The colleges want to lock you down so they know they have enough students to run courses etc and plan staffing.
Is there a careers person at school. You can probably email them for advice/a list of places they can go.

OP posts:
destiel00 · 03/07/2025 22:42

Yeah.
I'm phoning 2 tomorrow as dd is working
Sigh
I knew this would happen 😔
