Could Psilocybin cure mental health issues?

NC

I watched a couple of really interning films this weekend. One was 'Fantastic Fungi" and another was 'Magic medicine'. Both were talking about the effects that Psilocybin can have on curing mental health.

(For anyone that does'nt know what Psilocybin is - its the active ingredient in magic mushrooms)

There was an interesting study in the U.K with macrodosing ( large quantities) and I think one is Canada has just started.

I have seen quite a few sites on macro dosing - very small doses ( not enough to get high) and people have been saying that its massively improved their lives.

Psilocybin is actually illegal in this country and thats why its been so hard to even get permission to have these trials/studies.

I am just wondering if people have heard of this or what their views on it were

Thank you

I feel like I need a lesson in how to do it. I'd want it to try and manage my ADHD, and there is no way I'd manage to pay attention to all these steps because of my ADHD. Irritating!

Based on your username you keep reptiles. Honestly, if you can figure out a microclimate to keep retiles then you will be fine. My background in reptiles made it much much easier for me. I kept various species for 30+ years. Mycelium is really easy in comparison!

Ditto! It sounds incredibly overwhelming.

Ok I'll break it down as much as I can.

Day 1

You need straight sided jars. Like bonne mama jam jars or wide neck kilners. You punch 3-4 holes into the lid. Then you half fill them with white millet ( pet shop). Add enough water so the seeds have about 1/2cm of water over the top. Put lids on. Cover holes with micro pore tape. Cover tops with tinfoil. Pressure cook for 90 minutes. Leave tin foil on. Shake like buggery as soon as they are cool enough to spread any remaining moisture. Leave to Cool over night.

Day 2

Get your spore syringe, rubbing alcohol and a lit candle. Sterility is EVERY THING. Spray and wipe the lids with alcohol after removing the foil. Inject 2 ml of spores into 2 different holes through the tape. Sterilise the needle over the candle between each jab. Cover both holes with another layer of tape. Leave somewhere warm. They will colonise ina cold place but ideally 22-27c

2-4 weeks later

When your jar is fully white, cover vermiculite and coir in boiling water. Leave to sterilise with the kids on for 120 minutes . Then , with sterile hands, squeeze the water out of the mix until only a few drops are left. Put it into a plastic shoe box. You can use an equal mix of mycelium and coir/verm or up to 4 times more coir/verm for prolonged flushing. Wash hands. Empty out the mycelium and break it up into tiny bits. Mix it up. Add a 1cm layer of just coir/verm . Either add another box on top to make a greenhouse or add a plastic bag tent. Take it up so it's secure regardless. Then leave it until you get fruit.

1-3 weeks later

Remove the top, harvest the fruit just before the veil breaks. Soak the base cake for 1 hour an inch with in water. Then put the lid/bag back on and tape it up.

1-3 weeks later

Harvest. Repeat.

I can add some photos tomorrow if it helps

Bless you, that's very kind of you. I think even I could follow it 😂

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/12/2022 14:56

That is amazing, @glasshole , thank you.

There are reptiles in the house - millions of them but they are the Teen Vivs rather than mine. She has automated most of it now, they are all on substrate and doing really well. But, yes, I could follow what you have written down.

VERY tempted!

now definitely ship to UK

I'm still waiting for my delivery which was supposed to be with me by 8th dec. To be fair, I've bought clothes from France before and delivery is really slow since Brexit kicked in. I hope that's the reason, anyway!

I ordered mine after sorting out the payment issue and it came earlier than expected. It was due today but came last Friday! Started on Sunday (you dose every other day) and stopped drinking caffeine as suggested. It's really early days but I've not noticed any improvement in mental clarity or mood. I'm taking the minimum dose suggested.

Keep us updated. How long is it supposed to take to start working?

rachaelclaire1 · 14/12/2022 06:51

On the website it says that there are delays at the moment so your order may take longer.

Thanks for that! I was wondering if my parcel had been held up at customs bc it's an illegal substance... I guess that's still a possibility. I don't imagine the police might be too interested if that was the case. I hope not, anyway!

rachaelclaire1 · 14/12/2022 08:51

I actually don't know and I'm sticking the to advised amounts so maybe it's a bit low for me.

BrilliantGreenFlamingo · 15/12/2022 07:55

I guess you could always increase it a bit. I’d start off on the lowest dose too

Microcurious · 15/12/2022 13:09

Today is my third day of dosing every other day. I have a commitment on Saturday (the next dose day) so the next available day I'd be wiling to try a higher dose is Monday...though I have to weigh that up with the fact that I'd run out sooner than 30 days.

TR888 · 15/12/2022 18:40

What dose have you been having, Microcurious?

Btw, there's a micrdosing Reddit with really detailed information about how to microdose. You might want to have a look?

Thank you I'll take a look. I'm taking 0.3mg of Sclerotia to start with alongside half a teaspoon of Lion's Mane. Apparently I should feel some difference in week 3 and compassion for the world in week 4!

Microcurious · 17/12/2022 20:47

So I have tried to not give any conscious thought to the fact I am microdosing so that I wouldn't imagine or dream up any effects. Something would have to be really noticable and and I am actually starting to noice some changes. I am an alchoholic in recovery (for a number of years) but have never stopped feeling the pull and the pang of not having alcohol on a night out or in a social situation.

However, this weekend I have attended two events where I would usually have had a drink getting ready (at the very least) and would have gone on to envy all the drinking and merriment around me, no matter how much I concentrated on the positives. I also felt out of step with everyone else and socially awkward- like I forgot how to stand and talking and mingling was a real, enjoyable effort. In my day to day life I can be really funny when everyone is sober, like when I'm in work, but it all went out of the window in a panicky, swirling mass of anxiety in a situation when all my friends are drinking and I am not.

This weekend was like something finally flipped to where it should be. I didn't miss the pre drink while I was getting ready and enjoyed my herbal tea. I talked to my friends and peers at the events just as I would if we were all sober and I absolutely loved the mental clarity I retained that they did not and the freshness of being hangover free the next day. In short I felt at total peace. This sounds like nothing but it's absolutely HUGE for me. I never thought those pangs and anxiety would ever go away! So I really want to continue with this and have been researching cultivation all day.

@glasshole (or any other growers) do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

I'm going to take the plunge with the Uncle Ben Tec method to start with.

  1. Do you only have one batch on the go at any one time as you say you have an incubator. Do you mind sending me a link for the sort of incubator you have?
  1. Do you have a link for the coir/verm you use?
  1. Is it easy to ensure you get the right dose of spores from the syringe as a beginner?
  1. Do you use filtered water?
  1. Do you wear gloves?
  1. Do you make batches of small jars? The method I have seen on reddit uses a big container but this would probably mean one batch at a time.
  1. How do you know the right moment just before the veil breaks when it comes to harvesting? This is something I haven't been able to find anywhere.
  1. How can you tell if spores have dropped and will they harm you?
  1. How often to you dose? Do you have breaks?

I really appreciate any advice you may have!

Microcurious · 17/12/2022 20:53

Just to clarify that meant I would have MISSED the drink I used to have getting ready! I have been in recovery for a few years. Sorry it's taking ages for the typing to appear on Mumsnet tonight with all the bloody pop ups.

glasshole · 17/12/2022 21:35

@Microcurious

I'm just about to go to bed but I'll answer what I can remember now and do the rest tomorrow.

Yes I use gloves and use 70% alcohol and wear clean clothes and have a still air box. The more sterile you can get your tek the better your results.

I use medium grade vermiculite and coir blocks that you rehydrate with water. As a grain I use white millet or popcorn kernels. Others use wild bird seed ( without the sunflower seeds). This grain is what you inoculate.

I do use jars, but I also use tubs, bowls, unicorn bags etc. basically anything I can get that will work.

I use fresh tap water or rain water and sterilise it in the pressure cooker. I also make my own agar and liquid culture. LC colonise much faster than spores.

When most strains are growing into fruit they look like lollipops. Eventually the round ball on top goes more like a filling saucer shape and the veil is what you see underneath, it gets stretched and eventually breaks and goes tatty. This exposes the gills and then the fruit goes perfectly flat like a plate and thick black/brown/purple spores are released. Some species are invisible and some don't sporelate at all. Spores won't harm you but you should always have your fruit covered anyway to reduce contam. Even if it's just a Carrier bag taped on top. You want to harvest the fruit just as it looks like a flying saucer, before the bell has fully broken. You can harvest it later but some Pele complain of stomach issues from the spot related fruit. If you cut the head off a " just ready" fruit and put it on tin foil, add a drop of water to the cap and cover it for 48 hours then you will have a sore print. You can harvest the spores and start again.

Gutted about your parcel. No it was Parcelforce and they left it with a neighbour and texted me to say so.
