Hi all
Well I've picked up my prescription for citalopram I'm hoping to start taking it tomorrow morning but I'm already really anxious about it 😢
Anyone want to hold my hand

It was the best thing I could’ve done.

I’ve had some side effects (tiredness) but honestly it’s worth it not to have the constant, intrusive worrying all the time.

biteysaurus · 20/01/2021 19:00

It was a total game changer for me. Got my life back.

CoffeePhoenix · 20/01/2021 19:00

Yep. I don't work properly without it. I worried and worried at first, now I'm like "mustn't forget my crazy pills".

I felt odd the first time I took antidepressants- mainly I was off food, so I had bacon sandwiches because they were a treat Blush

I am so much better on them though - whatever helps you make it through the night..

I call them Mummy’s Little Helpers when talking to DH, like I’m Betty Draper.

NaughtyNell · 20/01/2021 19:04

Please dont be anxious....I've been on them on and off for years they will help you and that's got to be a good thing. If they dont suit you you can try other antidepressants with your doctors advice. I've never had a problem with them you may feel a bit tired at first but that soon goes.

LindaEllen · 20/01/2021 19:08

I started meds two weeks ago - sertraline - and I was nervous like you. The first tablet sat there for ages before I could make myself take it. I felt a bit rubbish for the first week but no side effects at all now. No benefits either but it's a bit early yet :).

Just go for it. A brighter life is right round the corner for you - you're holding what could be the solution! Remember that when you're worried :). I just sat there looking at the box thinking wow these little tiny pills could change my life.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/01/2021 19:10

Also, if they don’t work for you don’t be behind the door in telling your doctor.

I was put on Fluoxetine first and had terrible side effects- nausea, waking up in bed in a pool of sweat, the shakes, teeth grinding. After three days I called the doctor and he swapped me to citalopram.

I really lost my appetite for the first few weeks- I lost two stone, which got me down to a healthy bmi and has stayed off. That’s probably contributed to me feeling better as well, although it wasn’t exactly a healthy or responsible way to lose weight!

Llh1979 · 20/01/2021 20:13

Thank you all
I tried sertraline at the beginning of December and it was hourendous it brought on my 1st ever panic attack and I've not been right since
The gp has started me on 10mg I'm just terrified of a reaction like I did to the sertraline as I was on it 2.5 years ago and was absolutely fine on it so don't know what changed this time

Hand hold here. Best thing I ever did. My only side effect was a feeling of europhoria... I felt 'high' for about 48 hours. Made sleeping the first night hard, but we were visiting in-laws that weekend and all their conversations were absolutely riveting! I wish I found them that interesting the rest of the time!

Llh1979 · 20/01/2021 21:19

@tinofbeans that's just made me laugh sorry 🙈🙈

Life changing.

If you are really anxious about side effects, start off small.

I cut my first tablet into quarters (not much more than crumbs really) and took a quarter a day, then went up to halves for a couple of weeks before full dose. I had no side effects at all.

Been on them for 16 months and I'm a different person - for the better. I've also lost nearly 2 stone while I've been on them which somewhat contradicts the assumption that ADs automatically make you put on weight.

Good luck OP. Hope they work as well for you as they have for some of us .

chickychicchic · 20/01/2021 21:32

Don't worry OP I take 20mg they took me a couple of weeks to get used to made me tired and headaches but since then great

I take mostly to control my PMT but actually it's nice they just take the edge off to make life easier

Hope they work for you keep us updated

BlueCookieMonster · 20/01/2021 21:33

I take fluoxetine, and it’s been a life saver. Just keeps me on an even keel instead of circling the drain.

chichichibaby · 20/01/2021 21:56

Gave me my life back after 18 months staring out the window in the depths of depression. You will be fine, nothing weird to report from my experience but definitely helped me out of a black hole. Good luck x

Heather104 · 22/01/2021 12:59

How is it going? I’m on day 13 and it’s still rough. Hope it starts getting better soon.

Llh1979 · 22/01/2021 13:58

It took a good 6 weeks for it to start working for me (20) and my worst side effect was waking in the middle of the night for 2-4 hours.

However, I'm still on it nearly 8 years later, although hoping to come off my 10 dose once the pandemic is over.

TheBlueStocking · 22/01/2021 14:06

I agree with PP saying take a quarter to begin with.

If you are still feeling panicky on them, ask your GP about going on a tricyclic antidepressant instead.

Backbee · 22/01/2021 14:09

I took mine with a biscuit before bed when I first started, just as then I slept through a lot of the side effects. After a fortnight or so I didn't have any, and it made a huge difference. Started on 10mg and worked up to 20.

SausageCrush · 22/01/2021 14:18

They've been life changing for my Dd. She's been on them for two years. No side effects, just benefits. We call them her 'happy pills'.
Good luck Thanks

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 22/01/2021 15:04

I've got life back on them and yes they make me feel euphoric most of the time even a long time after starting so that side effect didn't wear off.
I take them in the morning because if you take them at night you will not sleep.
They are the happiest of pills they really are. I've also lost a stone since I started taking them and I'm getting my enthusiasm for things back.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 22/01/2021 15:05

I take 20 mgs.

Heather104 · 22/01/2021 15:50

I’m on 5mg day 13. They seem to just make it worse. Just always anxious, jittery and heart seems to be alway racing. Don’t know if it’s normal or I should try going up?

Llh1979 · 22/01/2021 16:42

I'm also on propranolol which seems to stop the racing heart
I'm so scared of the making me worse before making me better

I take 20mg have done for nearly 6 years. I find taking it at bed time is best for me as they make me tired
