To think it's ok to make myself sick sometimes?

Ok I know not everyone does it. But I make myself sick if I've drunk too much or if I feel like I'm bloated and had loads to eat. It makes me feel better. Today I ate 6 packets of crisps because I feel stressed. I made myself sick. That doesn't mean I have an eating disorder though does it? I feel better, I don't plan to do it again, but I feel better now. Cleansed I suppose.

You can take time off. You’re ill.

Most gp surgeries have appointments you can book on the day. Recurrence of an eating disorder is definitely reasonable to phone up tomorrow and ask at least for a call back.

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2018 19:50

You know it’s not good
But I get it’s hard to be in your position with work etc
No one in here will say it’s ok though

LIZS · 16/11/2018 19:54

What time do you drop your dc off? Some surgeries do early appointments, evenings , Saturdays...

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 16/11/2018 19:59

My dc walk to school (year 5 and 6 and 8).
I leave the house at 7 and get in for 7.30. Yes you can book on the day. You ring at 8.30, stay on the phone repeatedly to an engaged tone. Possibly get through and get an appointment after repeatedly calling over an hour. Possibly not.
I can't leave a class of students and repeatedly ring my GP on the off chance I'll get an appointment. They have very few advance appointments and they are difficult to get. They don't do weekends. I also know, from experience, they will give me some tablets and give me 6 crappy cbt sessions that do not work for me.

I meant call in sick to work, then you can ring the GP from home. If work is the main problem, a day off would be a good thing anyway.

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 16/11/2018 20:00

I'm in work tomorrow working on an extra curricular thing so I can't not go in. Students are relying on me tomorrow. I think I need to look at coping strategies I can use at home. And I do need to reduce the load on me, as it's triggered by stress.

I don't want to take time off. I have to still set work and my jobs just pile up while I'm off.

You can not go in. Don’t fall into that trap. That’s why so many teachers have poor mental health.

TheOrigBrave · 16/11/2018 20:11

I do wonder then how helpful it is for you to post here.

Most people (thankfully) have no personal experience with EDs so you've received some strange 'advice' and had some quite unhelpful responses.. That's not going to give you whatever it is you need to seek help, probably just the opposite (as we can see by your defensiveness in why you can't get professional help).

You could go over to the ED board, but it's pretty quiet over there, and TBH you'll be advised to seek professional help there as well.

Could you maybe set yourself a time limit on how long you'll try and change things yourself at home? Can you remember what helped change your habits last time?

TheOrigBrave · 16/11/2018 20:12

Mostly though, if you're not ready to recover then you're right - it's not a good use of anyone's time. I mean that in the nicest way. I know from personal experience that getting help and then 'failing' can feel even worse than not getting the help in the first place.

Hopefully now that HQ have moved this thread out of AIBU you'll get more sensible support and less ignorant judgypants comments.

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 17/11/2018 08:52

I was quite shocked by how ignorant some of the comments were.

I'm looking for a handhold/pal to try and improve my disordered eating habits (binge/purge). Had CBT and counselling and have prolonged periods of recovery before, I think having a pal to talk to could really motivate me. Could be PM or a new thread maybe on ED board for support. Fingers crossed. Xxx😘

It got worse the past few days. I took today off sick because it's become too much at work. It's been good to sleep and relax a bit today. I am going to go to the GP and get some anti depressants because they really helped last time. I think something has to change with work because I'm doing far too much.

Well I haven't made myself sick since the last time I posted. I'm still feeling absolutely shocking though.

Sorry OP, I’ve just seen no one replied to you following your last few posts.

I’m glad you took the day off to rest - I hope it helped.

I think it’s a really good idea to see the GP and try some medication again. I’m sorry I don’t remember all the details of your thread, but sometimes it can take a while to find exactly the right medication or combination of medications for you, so do persevere. Have you managed to book an appointment yet? Could you email and say you need an urgent appointment? I think you do really need to be seen ASAP, not wait weeks for an appointment.

Again sorry if you’ve already said this - but are you a member of any support groups or have you had any counselling specifically about this?

Keep going, you’ve done so well the last few days. It’s so tough but one step at a time... be kind to yourself Flowers
