We've been practicing all evening and he can repeat it after me and knows the last three lines it's just that no one can understand him, also if he has to speak in front of people he just doesn't, it's like mild selective mutism, if he's nervous or worried he won't be understood then he will just stop speaking and I don't think they'll accept his few makaton signs as "reciting the nursery rhyme"

Then tell them where to go! That's awful spidey, your poor DS :( Could you practise it with him, then record him reciting it? So you can show them if he does go silent? Would it help if he watched it back so he does know he can do it? Practise in front of a group of his toys pretending they are the class? Would it help him to act it out and sign whilst he says it? It seems a bit cruel...

MySpideySenseTickles · 29/11/2014 07:08

They seem to have planned it with the other children in the class in mind and not spared a thought for ds, he's not got a statement of SN so basically they treat him exactly the same as everyone else which is great usually but then they don't seem to consider that he might have different needs to some of the other children. They're doing a "class production" for Christmas I have no idea what that means other than its a non-religious alternative to a nativity play, but ds came home upset the other day because he'd been taken into the corridor (they take them out of class when they're disruptive it's where they do timeout) he'd been taken out of class because they were practicing singing Christmas songs and he wouldn't join in singing and wanted to dance to the music instead.

I don't know if I'm being oversensitive or if their attitude to his speech is becoming an issue, he's got an appointment with a speech therapist soon and I'm going to ask her to write a letter to school to guide them on how they should be helping him like not trying to force him to speak in front of the whole class or stand on stage and sing for all the parents.
Maybe he needs to be pushed to speak more but I'm not sure they're doing it in the right way.

That sounds utterly rubbish spidey Sad I hope the SALT helps with school's methods.

MySpideySenseTickles · 30/11/2014 00:16

I'm going to bloody kill Dh! I've been teaching ds Dr foster and he was pickin it up well till Dh told him the other version where "shower of rain" is replaced by "shower of shite"
Now ds spent the afternoon shouting "shower of shite!" And refusing to say rain.
Good job it's not very clear really, unlike whence was two and Dh thought it was funny to teach ds to shout "tits" which for a long time was one of very few words he could pronounce properly.
It's not funny at all and has caused so many arguments but Dh continues to swear.

SnowyMouse · 02/12/2014 13:10

I hope they're just transitory side-effects, fluffy

SnowyMouse · 02/12/2014 17:29

I've got the tv on, I've been watching the Roux Scholarship program that comes on at 7.

Yum, curry sounds good. I had left over garlic broccoli from last night.

Pulledapart · 02/12/2014 18:21
